  • 💡 In 2009, Mattel, Barbie’s manufacturer, invested well over $30 million in building their very first flagship store in Shanghai - they called it the “House of Barbie”. However, in March 2011, after only 2 years of operations, Mattel announced they were closing down the House of Barbie. And just like that, $30 million of investment evaporated. So, what were the real reasons that Barbie Shanghai failed to live up to its expectation? And what were some of the blindspots that Mattel executives didn’t see?

Barbie is very popular in China. Your just being delusional. If you search for Barbie screenings in most major cities, you will find out they are multiple slots of them throughout the day and weekend night showings are mostly jam packed.

Its like the people in charge are completely out of touch with the market realities. So, they crashed and burned.

They should have only opened store and that would have worked .a building should rather have been build in nyc ,London.

What i dont understand why they didnt make barbie look chinese is beyond me. But they did have a "PAN ASIAN" barbie whitch was like??? aslo barbie didnt really fit the chinese idea of woman whitch in turn again they should have just had her be the nicer and softer girl. Mattel has a problem with localizing the doll since its early history.

As much as I love Barbie, it isn't that big of a success in China sadly, it was in the top 5 when it just got released, it's still a worldwide success anyway
