    Beautiful Landing. On the touchdown zone! Firm is not unusual in most of the islands due to short runways and water on each end of the runway. No room for soft landings. We aren't in LA, Chicago, or New York. Just around 6600 feet in Pohnpie. I've flown them all. B737-800

      I wish pilots would announce something like this so the passengers don't get a fright. Even if they just said "expect a hard bump - it's unavoidable because of the short runway but it's perfectly safe".

    This is my dream! One day I have to take this unique route, hopping the many Islands of the great Pacific Ocean in a Boeing 737! I have watched so many videos of this route over and over, and they never cease to make me crave doing it in person! Great video!

    I missed the FSM (Federated States of Micronesia) so much I traveled all the beautiful islands there before between 1988 to 1992 from Guam, Saipan, Yap, Palau, Truk (Chuuk now) Kosrae, Ponape (Pohnpei now), Marshall Islands, Majuro and many more during my mission years as an LDS Elder. It was still CONTINENTAL AIR MICRONESIA then, best islands hopper, Thanks for this video, I feel emotional looking at those lovely atolls, volcanic islands and lagoons in the Pacific Rim.

    Sometimes, in Pacific islands, runway are shorts ( very ) .... and it's difficult to make a " kiss landing " for the pilot ! in this condition ... for me it's a " normal " landing in this case .... ( it's not a little plane but 737 800 more distance to stop ..... and no more runway so hard landing )

      There are scheduled B77E flights into an airport with the same size runway, so no excuses here. That airport is Wellington, in New Zealand, which commonly has high crosswinds on its only runway.

    • @tristanhnl
      @tristanhnl 8 років тому +1

      The plane did seem to come in a little high over the runway, therefore it had to be planted down quite abruptly. Needless to say it's better to have a hard landing and be able to stop the plane, than to make a smooth landing and overshoot the runway. On that note, some smooth landings are the result of "floating", which results in more runway being used up before the wheels touch down, and that's actually dangerous.

    • @erauprcwa
      @erauprcwa 7 років тому +1

      You must not fly airplanes or to the least, have ever had to land an aircraft on a short runway. If it's a short runway, who cares if the landing is "soft", the point is to get it down and stopped, but we try to make it comfortable for passengers. At the end of the day, even during training, short field landings are to be firm and stopped with the least amount of runway used.

    • @76notam
      @76notam 7 років тому

      so, i'm not a 737 800's pilot , it's a great job.... but i pilot just a "ulm" microlight plane that all, but i like flying. i live near a airport Rouen France (LFOP ) and the runway is 1700m ( 518ft ) considering short runway for a 737 ( example ) and Pohnpei is a 1829m ( 557ft) .... and sometimes with a bad condition it was short for this type of plane! " go around" after 2 or 3 time direction to LFPG or LFPO!

    While working with United MAJ and constantly going through the Island Hopper to and from Guam, have always been told by several senior pilots that Kosrae was one of the shortest runways they fly to (upon landing and spoilers armed, you feel the brakes pulling you towards kissing the seat in front of you) while Pohnpei was always the toughest landing due to breaking mountain waves from the Sokehs Rock you see at 18:28. HD Quality is insane.

    • @noxiousdow
      @noxiousdow 4 місяці тому

      I'm so glad to hear this. On my flight we all thought we had a roughly trained pilot but what happened matches your description exactly. Kosrae landing pushed everyone forward to the seat in front and the Pohnpei landing was wobbly, seeming like weird side winds, then a super-hard bumpy landing which unnerved the passengers.

    Those ETOPS 737's are rather impressive. Sure beats the DC-8 and 707 of the days of yore! That must be a very short runway for the pilot to drop it in like that! Very nice work (you and the pilot).

    In 2008 a Boeing 727 cargo jet overran the runway and the airport had to be closed for 6 days. It's been lengthened, but still looks short on the maps. Looks like the pilot has to put down fast, and this is probably common with jets this size. The crew is used to it, and there's no sense warning the passengers. "Ladies and gentlemen, this aircraft likes about 1,500 meters to stop, and that's about all we got, so hang on."

      +Harry Maier In Wellington airport, in New Zealand, with a similar length runway, it is not uncommon to land B789, B77W, and soon a sheduled B77E. Historically, both the 747SR and SP were sheduled in.

    Love the sound of the engines up near full thrust... that buzzing kind of sound. I never heard or at least noticed it before back in 2009 I was on a 767 either to or from Amsterdam from NYC... I guess it would have been KBDL (Bradley International) to Schipol which they might not even run anymore. Anyone know why , having flown before on other 737's and A320s and such , even CRJ, ERJ and MD80s I never heard that noise until the 767..? Which btw was particularly loud to me, the overall noise inside.

    The hard landing is intentional. When runways are short they have to put it down right away and apply max brakes. If they flare or float just a second to long they'll have to go around. It's basic procedure to slam it into the runway right when you get over it.

    • @Z_Co95
      @Z_Co95 8 років тому +1

      ***** Obviously the pilots would love to make a smooth landing. However, when there is a short runway that test your range of slowing down you have to get the plane on the ground. You come in a bit slower and do a short field landing procedure where you don't have time to float over the runway and you start flaring a bit earlier. However depending on the airport you can't start to flare possibly due to a lower elevation of land in front of the runway, trees, power lines etc. Therefore you come in at a speed just above stall speed and get the plane on the ground. As a result you get a nice hard landing. Hope that makes sense to you

    • @reubenmorison8149
      @reubenmorison8149 8 років тому +1

      +Zg G that runway is not short. It may be by American standards, but I regularly get perfect landings on a runway shorter than this in both B737 and A320

    Did the pilots not lower speed enough before they touched the ground? Because they speeded up before they were over the runway and started to slow down when the wheel just touched the ground.

    Pohnpei has a really short runway, i can only assume that max brakes were set to immediately halt the plane. That being said, the brakes probably caused the jerkish reaction. Seemed like a good short approach

    • @avgeekyvr
      @avgeekyvr  8 років тому

      +Paolo Gatdula Was a short runway for sure! Though, this was a very hard landing and didn't have much to do with the brakes. Since these flights were on a short schedule, max reversers were used to help slow us down, so the brakes wouldn't overheat.

    • @reubenmorison8149
      @reubenmorison8149 8 років тому

      +AvgeekYVR - RTWTravel this runway length is very common for the B738 outside of America, and can easily take off for an over 3 hour flight off it. This is no excuse. Even with a bastard of a crosswind and below the glide landing, I still had a far better landing on a shorter runway. Also, I had a better landing in thick fog on the third attempt halfway down the 6000ft runway, however this was in a B733

  • @lsubandtrumpet2014

  • @joecarpenter4522
    @joecarpenter4522 7 років тому

    I gotta say, that was a pretty good smack of a touchdown. However, the Pohnpei runway is a total distance of 6001 ft. However (part 2), the pilots are aiming for the 1000' marker (which now gives them 5000' to stop in). For a 737-900... that's pretty snug. Best get it on the pavement, spoilers out, reversers, and med to max auto brakes lest they have to reject the landing and give it another go.

  • @tegjwokjohn1839
    @tegjwokjohn1839 5 років тому +1

    The only reason why the pilot did'nt butter was because if he did, he would not have much runway left, and would have to execute a go around, or risk making a runway overrun.

      +FSim Channel those are the new-ish split scimitar winglets they are installing to increase efficiency and lower fuel burn. They're pretty sharp looking!

      He actually made a very good landing. It is a short runway and a 737-800 would probably use it all if he didn't put it down firmly and get it stopped quicker than usual.
