    In this week's video, I continue a challenge to break out of my skateboarding niche and authentically express myself. Facing the fear of losing subscribers and views, I share the experience as a form of exposure therapy, aiming to inspire others to embrace authenticity. Despite losing some subscribers, the deeper purpose is to prioritize creative freedom over metrics and encourage others to be their true selves. Join me on this journey of self-discovery and breaking free from the fear that holds us back.

    It's not about the lack of skating, I will watch other skaters talk endlessly if they're entertaining. I am out cause I got no interest in stoner philosophers. You do you but it is not for me. And before I go here's a word of caution: Being authentic isn't inherently a good thing, you can be an extermely genuine monster. Being a good person comes first on the hierarchy before expressing yourself at all cost. People sometimes change things about themselves for very good reasons, don't start using authenticity as an excuse.

    Dude I’ve been watching your videos since you were a freshman in college at the time I was a freshman in high school and I was super into skating just like you I would always look forward to your videos in my subscription feed after school and I remember watching your slappy crook trick tip over and over again it’s crazy because you’ve really inspired me ever since I was a kid to pursue my own UA-cam channel and the making of this video couldn’t be better timing Thank you George keep creating and expressing yourself!

    No offense but what did you expect? People subscribed what they subscribed for and you switched up (which is your right). Point being, don’t take it personally.

    Seems kinda self serving and redundant to make a statement out of your channel dying when you abandoned it for a year then came back with totally unrelated subject matter. You spent years asking people to like and subscribe for skateboarding content. If you subscribe to a cooking channel and then they start talking about drywall repair every week you’re obviously gonna unsub or not watch. Using your audience that you’ve turned your back on essentially to gain some sense of self awareness or personal growth is just wack. Good luck in life but just start another channel or move on, dude. Peace.

    It’s cool. Love to see it. You’re in another chapter of your life and different people will gravitate towards this while others from before stay or leave.
    It’s a shedding and it’s brave. Who knows maybe sometimes you’ll want to do some skate stuff again now that you’re showing yourself you can incorporate whatever moving forward

    I sense also a slight bit of intentional self sabotage with posting about “who you are now”. What’s the worrying within yourself comparing who you where to make the channel with comparing it to who you “are now”? You worry you’re not as impactful?

    Sorry George I was down with you for a while didn’t care about the helmet or anything what I liked about you was you were yourself, fun, kind & kinda dorky but that was unique in skateboarding & I liked it. Then you started taking mushrooms and got honestly not just annoying but sooooo self involved, kinda narcissistic & absolutely pretentious. We get it, you read books & meditate but you absolutely use word jargon to walk yourself in loops. Authentic folks don’t need to remind people they are their authentic selves everyday. Have fun with the enlightened path of the Amazon influencer program, skateboarding isn’t that deep…

    • @skateandgeekout
      @skateandgeekout 2 місяці тому +1

      You're spot on. People with big egos have a rigid view of themselves that they take very seriously, so they are constantly reinforcing this image that they want to put out there, trying to dunk on people that they're more spiritual, or more enlightened, look at what I'm reading, did I forget to tell you I meditate, bla, bla, bla. When you grow and mature and if your ego gets smaller, you really don't give a shit what people think and your conversations can be fun, cracking jokes, truly listening to people, and none of this I need to get across that this is who I am, this is what I'm into, this is what I know, perceive me to be like this. You can be spiritual, wise, and mature and not have to talk about it or give yourself a pat on the back, it will come out in your actions and how you live and you'll naturally be more confident in decision making, and have peace of mind.

    🖤🖤🖤 had a similar feeling recently when posting an illustration on my art page on IG. For some reason I had really bad anxiety about posting it. An overwhelming feeling of it coming off as “cringe” with the flaming skull and left hand horns. Buttfuckit we push thru! 😤🤘🖤

    i used to watch your skate content sporadically for the past few months, but your authenticity breaking your niche on that video made me subscribe to your channel, so keep doing what you're doing, and eventually you'll know how to incorporate the skate content organically as it is part of your life I suppose, if that's what you want

  • @averageskater900
    @averageskater900 7 місяців тому +1

    There's also a consequence to posting outside the niche on another channel and then coming back onto the this channel after months with something completely different. Where as if you you faced the fear straight away the decline in subscribers might not have been as drastic and your audience might have transitioned with you a little easier.
    Pewdiepie is a brilliant example. He never had another channel he just changed the content as he changed. The same goes for Josh Katz, he was a skate channel and transitioned into photography. He may have lost some of his audience but a lot of them just followed along because people liked him. It can be the same for you but because you transitions of the channel for a while some of your audience may have to get to know you again as a lot of your journey has happened on other channels.

      I will likely continue to share about this transformation I’ve gone through, as I think it can be of immense benefit for those who are ready to go through the same transition but are still stuck behind fear - But overall, I’m still in a stage of “exposure therapy” for the remainder of this challenge running through the end of March. The point is to post freely, no matter how “messy”, “repetitive”, etc, to fully break myself out of the fear and become more free - so I’m really just following my impulses about what to post.

    Fuck yea dude. You’re gonna build up a new community that’s there to watch the content you want to put out instead of content you don’t feel as connected to. Also, I wouldn’t take it personally when people unsubscribe, they’re probably just skaters who are interested in skate content so when they see something different they unsubscribe, but it’s not something personal against you.

    You could just start a new channel. Have one for your skateboarding content, and one for more personal/other stuff...
    It's not "un-authentic". It helps your viewers lock in to what kind of content they want to see more of. Maybe someone only wants to see your skateboarding content and isn't interested at all in your personal journey stuff (yet). That should be fine right? By breaking off into a separate channel, you don't alienate that viewer, they can just sub to the skating channel and get exactly what they want!
    Hear me out. Many people come to UA-cam seeking education and information about a particular thing. If I subscribe to a carpentry channel, it's because I like the carpentry content. If every other video is totally unrelated to carpentry and dives into the guy's new found spiritual quest into the Old Testament, I'm like, okay good for you but I'm here for carpentry. That might cause me to look elsewhere to a channel that's more focused.
    I see where you're coming from, but look there's probably more people who are just more into your previous content. Not a big deal. Grow another branch on your tree, you can still cross pollinate by doing shout-outs to your other channel. "If you want to learn more about me personally then check out my other channel... etc, etc."
    If this is your business, treat it like one. You've got over a quarter million subs, you should be using your metrics as a guide for what kind of content to produce, that's what it's for!
    I dunno, just a perspective to consider.
