As a fan and player of prog rock and jazz (on piano) I've always adored this song. The effect of the drums playing straight 4/4 and the riff playing in a sort of 5/4 gives a sense of staggering, like an old dog or a drunk staggering or stumbling down the street. It's fabulous. Your rendition is just about perfect, by the way.
Thankyou Justin , another great lesson , this is one Jimmy actually mentioned in an interview stating this is one of the hardest zeppelin tunes he has had to play for them over the years !! Great job bud
Thanks for playing so slow so we can copy notes on our own tab paper to have song!!!! You play this song GREAT & THANKS A LOT!!! Please do more songs like this.
Thank you Justin .The true value of a teacher is giving the students the means to improve without the teacher being there.I have always followed the dictum ,practice slowly, learn fast…..Now by showing me Transcibe I can play Black Dog at 57%speed and realise I still am too slow ,but by taking that speed up 1 percent up each time the practice should get it up to speed soon enough ta.
I remember learning that years back, I probably drove everyone mad with it until I got it down; great track from my favourite band. Good technique and amp balance will get you the sound you want.
I think he said somewhere that he plans to re-shoot all the potato looking videos at some point. There are a couple of Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes as well like Can't Stop and Under the Bridge.
Thank you, Justin. Very helpful. (Regarding 'Transcribe': for linux users this function can be delivered by an application called "Play It Slowly". Worked for me on Ubuntu Linux.
Thanks man! As' an intermediate player, I love learning simple yet classic riffs like in Black Dog.They do a lot to help my confidence and I appreciate when you upload one. Another poster just requested a song by Deep Purple. I too would like to suggest a Deep Purple song. The basic riff and rhythmic portion of Knocking On Your Back Door. There are a few people that posted playing this song but not in lesson mode and I really could use some help with it. Keep up the great work you do and not just in the music scene. God Bless you Justin.
Today's session programm is sorted. One of my favourites of all times. Thanks, Justin! If you haven't seen Black Dog cover by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, I'd recomend to check it out. It's brilliant beyond words really.
it litteraly goes out of tempo , in the sick riff most explained here, its one on tempo, the second off, and then the 3d time its o 5/4 so it has one more note , for magically get back on main tempo.. idols of riffing it
Sadly Justin the overzealous LZ copyright attack dogs hound UA-cam into "suspected infringement mute audio" mode. Even on many clearly educational/instructional videos. Thank you for uploading though and have a great 2018 :)
yes this is a re-upload. The good ol sofa, old logo and my the years have not been kind to me ;)

Any chance you could look at Mark Lanegan’s Bubblgum album. Some great guitar work on there...

Ha, I was thinking the same thing!!
Hang on, he looks younger here....is this an old lesson reuploaded?
yep - for some reason the old one had the audio muted - so trying again :)
Planning to do the same for your lesson on Babe I'm Gonna Leave You? Went back to brush up a bit the other day and noticed it had been muted :/
