I met Brett this past September in Prescott at the Legacy Ranch Horse sale. Outstanding horseman, I'm happy to have found this channel.

Very timely post for me. I've been thinking about shaping my bosal in preparation for starting my young horse in it. Good tips from the Pabst Blue Ribbon cowboy.

My Dad used to sing a little song about Pabst and me drinking it, pretty good song.

I am somewhat intimidated by the hackamore. I ride my mare bareback sometimes and just use the halter and a lead line tied up to make reins. I can’t hurt her if I do that whereas if I don’t use a hackamore properly I may do some damage. I imagine it takes a fair bit of training. She’s very well trained for the halter and pleasure classes of the Paint world.

When a horse becomes dull to the hackamore it is referred to as run thought. You can run a horse through the hackamore my using it wrong or shaping it wrong or adjusting it wrong but you dont actually hurt anything in terms of the horse or how it rides in other equipment and they can nearly always be made sensitive to the hackamore again. The only way to learn how to use one is to use one.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt my neurotic brain has me almost hog tied. I spent 12 years and many thousands of dollars to have her trained for me and me trained for her. I am many thousands of miles away from my coach now for the past 4 years so I have my ponies all to myself. I am so damn afraid of messing her up beyond fixing and the trauma that would ensue. I know I’m being silly but it’s a big meta physical speed bump. You have me beginning to chip away at that and I thank you so much. I have been watching your tutorials and I love your way of being technical but also not being technical. I know this horse world is a linguistic space but sometimes the language is unintelligible and confusing. So confusing that we don’t even look at or hear what the horse is trying to tell us. I will be signing up for your patreon lessons. I need loosening up and more confidence.

@@sassy6292 Well if it is that big of a mental block I suggest you wait for now. I understand your situation and why you feel hesitant. I think people should get out of there comfort Zone but one can get to far out and mentally damage the horse with ones own thoughts and fears. In terms of being technical but not being technical, Im with you. Some people seem to think they have to talk over everyones head to be right. I have read and studied a lot but I spit it back out the way I understand it. Its pretty easy to out think a horse but I stutter and forget words and mispronounce things in the literal sense talking on camera and in the figurative sense talking to horses.

Why not get a good rawhide hackamore? There's so many good Canadian's and Amarican braiders out there, why ride junk

I agree Steven. I have probably 20 hackamores and this is the one that does not get used much.
