This is a fun exercise. My predictions for Fiction/History Fiction are: * James by Percival Everet, * The Women Kristin Hannah, * Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar * Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and * Intermezzo by Sally Rooney. Mystery/Thriller * the new Freida McFadden (she won last year), * First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston, * Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera, * All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker * God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Romantasy, probabli Bride by Ali Hazelwood. For Fanrasy, I agree with you. I would only add Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune. Nonfiction, I think * The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, * Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg * There's Always This Year by Hanif Abdurraqib * Cue the Sun by Emily Nussbaum.
A little late, but these are my horror predictions: • Murder Road by Simone St. James • You Like It Darker by Stephen King • Diavola by Jennifer Marie Thorne • What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher • I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones • The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim • Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman • We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer There were a lot of big releases that are not eligable due to bad ratings so the category will be a bit unpredictable
I tend to read a lot of Historical Fiction and for that category I would say The Women by Kristin Hannah and The Lion Women of Tehran by Marian Kamali. I really think The Spellshop and Dragonfruit deserve to be on a list not sure what category.
I know there are been additional categories added. But I would like to see more sub genres. It would allow for more books to be given attention and more genres to be highlighted. I don’t pay particular attention to the GR’s mystery books because they don’t seem to give attention to the kind of books under mystery that I enjoy.
I'd be surprised if the new SJM book isn't on the romantasy list. I'm not sure if a traditionally published indie originals would count. The Ashes and the Star Cursed King was nominated for romantasy last year, back when it was still indie published (the trad pub didn't come out until this summer). An Ember in the Ashes seems to be gaining new traction with the paperback being replaced with new editions this year. As for YA recs of the last few years, I'd recommend Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa.
Could "Blood Over Bright Haven" be nominated in fantasy because it will be traditionally published this year or is it a snub for last year? Gosh, I loved that book so much.
I read a mix of fantasy and fantasy romance, but this year I’ve been reading a lot more fantasy romance. I think the new SJM book will be nominated, and may win. However, I also think Bride by Ali Hazelwood will make the list and possibly give SJM a run for her money. When the Moon Hatched and A Fate Inked in Blood will also probably be nominated. According to the rules, goodreads goes by first publication date, meaning indie books that have been picked up by trad publishers and released this year are not eligible.
I’d say even more likely to for sure show up than Leigh bardugo is SJM since the third Crescent City book came out this year. Her books winning no matter what is why I was so happy ‘Romantasy’ came in as a fantasy romance category. I also really hope John Gwynne shows up!
I’m actually very curious to see how this goes because I feel like generally the third crescent city was not very well received. I certainly thought it was garbage 😅
Five Broken Blades was totally just fantasy even though they marketed it as Romantasy. The romance was like 10-20% of the plot I think. I liked it! But it was false advertising lol
Lol, I felt completely different! I was expecting fantasy with maybe a stronger romantic subplot (which I enjoy) but it focused heavily on romance, without building up the world or characters much. I was so disappointed, honestly. I was hoping for a slightly edgier and more romantic Mistborn.
I would really like the Silverblood Promise and Five Broken Blades (which may be romantasy? I can’t tell anymore) to appear in the awards but I doubt they will
ive done a good amount of research into past years for my predictions. in the last several years, no direct sequel has been nominated when the previous book was not. that means fury of the gods is gone and so is trials of empire. then for meg schaffer, her last book was nominated for fiction & this one is considered fiction by goodreads shelves so i think it wont be in fantasy. warm hands of ghosts has been marketed as fantasy on goodreads , so its a shoo-in!
The sequel to Cerulean Sea came out this year, I imagine it gets nominated for fantasy. Ditto with the second book in Mark Lawrence's library trilogy. And I'd be absolutely shocked if To Shape a Dragon's Breath didn't get a YA nomination. Heartless Hunter is adult/NA romantacy, and it was pretty good. I think it'll get nominated, not good enough or popular enough to win imo
I read a mix of fantasy and fantasy romance, but this year I’ve been reading a lot more fantasy romance. I think the new SJM book will be nominated, and may win. Also, goodreads tends to put YA romantasy in the YA fantasy category. Last year they put Powerless in YA, so I think they’ll do the same with Reckless. I do think Heartless Hunter/The Crimson Moth will be nominated, but in the YA category.
For sci fi I’d love to see The Principle of Moments by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, though I could see it in fantasy too depending on how they categorise it. And for thrillers The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton, his other two books were both nominees so I think this is a shoe in
For some of the other categories, I suspect The God of the Woods and All the Colors of the Dark will both be nominees for mystery/thriller. I think James and Tom Lake will be nominated in fiction or historical fiction and The Women will be nominated in historical fiction.

The cozy fantasy I would assume would be noimated would have to be Bookshops and Bonedust, but I don't know what the cut-off dates are. Also Dungeon Crawler Carl was previously self published but got an official release this year, and it has a big fanbase. The fantasy book I know that will be snubbed is To Shape A Dragon's Breath, an amazing series debut that just didn't get enough love (again not sure about cut-off dates). My most anticipated book this year was The Phoenix Keeper, and that was such a disappointment.

I really liked Heartless Hunter, but it is definitely not YA. I think the protagonist were just adults, like 18-20 years old range. But there was definitely open door romance scenes in it. So it should fall under romantasy.

@@kytten I loved the Will of the many but that was last year wasn’t it? I’m sure I voted for it in the first round
@@danielleoliver1734 shi- you're right, oops!
I fully expect The Book that Broke the World by Mark Lawrence to be snubbed.
There’s no way bloodnover bright haven doesn’t deserve to be on here UNLESS as a release it doesn’t count because it’s just so impactful
John Gynne's great
If Fury of the Gods doesn't get nominated its on sight
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Yay spellshop ❤
The Women will win historical fiction and Spitting Gold should get a nom. Good Material and Creation Lake will get fiction noms and Margo’s Got Money Troubles has a chance of winning. Honey miiiiiiight get nominated. I would like to see The Book of Doors and A Short Walk Through A Wide World get fantasy noms. Ministry of Time could take both sci fi and debut. The Spellshop was published by Bramble so it’s slated as romantasy. Us In Ruins is an excellent low-fantasy YA, fyi.
The only book I know will win is Sally Rooney's latest book. Because it's Sally Rooney 😆
I want to read the spell shop so baaaaaad
I really liked five broken blades ❤
I really liked Heartless Hunter, but it is definitely not YA. I think the protagonist were just adults, like 18-20 years old range. But there was definitely open door romance scenes in it. So it should fall under romantasy.
I don't keep up with popular new releases in any category, so I'll just vote for The Spellshop wherever it turns up and that's it.
