  • A short film exploring the history and meaning of the Durham Miners' Gala. First hosted in 1871, the Gala is the world's greatest celebration of community, solidarity and working-class culture.
For more than a century, the Gala was paid for by the working miners of the Durham Coalfield. It is their gift to us all.
Today, it is funded by our Marras, who make contributions throughout the year. To join, or to find out more, go to: www.friendsofdurhamminersgala.org/join_us

In 1962 we were travelling through Durham and got caught in parade through Durham on our way to Scotland. So special hours to travel through.

Historically the pitman and their wives called it " The big meetin' " and pronounced Gala as "Gayla". The academics here are calling it "The Garla" although some of the mining people interviewed are still calling it the gayla. I remember being corrected as a boy "It's not the Garla it's the bloody Gayla!"

I played bagpipes in the CONSETT and DISTRICT BRITISH LEGION pipe band in the early 1960's and did the GALA every year for CONSETT local banners. i wonder if there is any film footage anywhere/

The UK opposed the ECSC, insisting "the Durham miners won't wear it"

These buildings should be crammed with working class people right now, they should be debating, if not shouting and screaming about the state of this bloody country! The Left/ right paradigm is dead. I was born in Dryburn, I love Durham, We dont have a Labour Party - its all one party. We dont have a working class culture, its a contrived and media constructed culture. We have a World Economic Forum - PM (implant) where is the Labour Party outcry? I'll tell you, it's down on it's knees kissing the boots of the Globalist Banking Elites - they all piss in the same pot. We also have a World Economic Forum FOUNDER MEMBER AS A SO CALLED kING - you add it up. Somebody please wake up the so called working class.
