All of the so-called jazz purists who dismissed this at the time were so very wrong (and still are). This music is arguably as strong, as inventive, as complex, and meaningful as any of the previous "straight-ahead" swinging post-Bop or other kinds of jazz thought to be superior. And this conception of Herbie's has withstood the test of time too.
I listened to Herbie Hancock while stationed at Ft. Smith, Washington and then Germany. I'd play it loud in the Barracks and drive some soldiers crazy with it, but, in the end I got them all to enjoy it and respect his talent. I'd Iron my Fatigues & Spit Shine my Boots listening to Herbie Hancock. He kept me going forward......THanks M Hampton
Jazz purists don't understand jazz if they can't respect fusion and funk being in the sound. It broke jazz wide open. Jazz had gotten pretty stale IMO and had to morph into something else, jazz would be truly dead if it never evolved. And who gets to label what jazz is or isn't.
One of the greatest artists of the previous century and our current - and likely the one after that. Also beautiful how all these brilliant musicians leave room for each other.
Very cool! BTW: That's the great Bill Summers on Shekere, Congas, and hand percussion. It looks like Mike Clark on drumset and, of course the iconic Paul Jackson on bass. This is one of Funk's early, ground-breaking rhythm sections. Check out Paul's bass part: it's basically built around the 3-2 Son Clavé... and then goes on a Funk journey. Gotta give props to the traditions and the tradition-builders!
Bill's playing pandeiro during the 1st half of Herbie's (Fender Rhodes) solo, then he switches to conga. A close friend of mine recently met BILL down in New Orleans, LA. He was leading a sacred Yoruban ceremony that got quite intense. They later spoke & he enlightened her on the subjects of music & religion.
Stunning. I so want to know how Herbie got that amazing magic show to work with the synthesizer solo near the end. I can only see three possibilities. 1. Herbie is literally magical 2. Herbie has the synth behaving like a theremin 3. A brilliant and daring piece of theatre. Any of these options my jaw is on the floor.
agreed and creative recesses of mine are not used as much to harness the excellent musicianship seen here. No way musicianship has progressed only the technology has progressed and the musicians talent has regressed... Awesome performance by Herbie and the Headhunters though
To have the answer to that you only need to what legendary Punk Svengali Malcolm McLaren said when he encountered early hip-hop. "I saw hip-hop as the black version of punk with the biggest difference being that unlike in punk where you didn't need to play an instrument well, with hip-hop you didn't need to play an instrument AT ALL." And that's the whole problem here, with Hip-hop being the main black music these days, it's simply not cool for a young black aspiring musician to pick up a guitar because the use of instruments is something for white guys. Those people apparently have no idea who Chuck Berry is.
Just got to dig around. Don't forget that most "acts" in the 1970s were schlocky no-talent hacks that the music industry was just trying to make a buck off of. Think disco. Think glam rock. Think Kiss. There are always hard core musicians around, pushing envelopes and making magic happen for everyone. Like HH and the Headhunters did throughout the 70s.
If you notice, as keyboardist, Herbie is playing the rhythm and lead at the same time! Both hands on two different keyboards. This is virtuoso playing!
Yes well it WOULD be virtuoso playing, wouldn't it .. ? .. .. BECAUSE IT'S HERBIE !!! When have u EVER known him to let u down in terms both of sheer harmonic and rhythmic intensity and sheer, climactic excitement? Hardly ever, IRRESPECTIVE of whichever jazz sub-genre he chooses to express his GENIUS in. (There aren't too many of THOSE with each generation, either?!
+ogu map No he is definitely not Steve Gadd...he is way better. Put your ears on! Steve Gaddd, nobody, can touch that groove. Mike Clark is the father of linear drumming. Check out Actual Proof on Thrust. His work on God Make Me Funky a few years later is some of the most sampled stuff in hip hop. Plus he is a serious JAZZ drummer in NYC. Steve Gadd? Gimme a break.
THE PHENOMENAL MR. MICHAEL CLARK ON DRUMS; THE FUNKIEST WHITE MAN TO EVER PLAY THE DRUMS; NEXT TO MR. GREG ERRICO OF SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE. TWO OF THE GREATEST EVER.

One of the greatest artists of the previous century and our current - and likely the one after that. Also beautiful how all these brilliant musicians leave room for each other.
So ahead of it’s time
Certainly was/IS. Humanity as a whole has a long way to go to catch up with Mr Hancock.
I can't believe anyone that listened to this didn't like it.
that arp solo just blows every thing out of the water
The intro is phenomenal...unbelievable musicianship and crowd participation was outstanding!!!
Best Funk Band Ever !!!
"God make me funky" is one of my favorites.
they took it to another level
I remember this @ Warehouse in New Orleans, LA backstage. Bill Summers, Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson Herbie Hancock.
Wow...so you were literally at this very performance???
Your were a blessed woman

That drum part at 6:20 has got to be one of the most bad-ass things I've ever heard. Too nasty.
That’s Mike Clark - still playing great with Bill Summers, percussion
the crowd and silence 😮
Groove,Groove,Groove and more groove....the Black magic
Herbie's truly a remarkable artist...Wish I've gotten into his music earlier. Wish you the best!! ^^

"WOW".......I was 12 years old when you did this tune.....Thank you.....HERBIE,still one of my favorites!

i betcha its a cv pedal controlling the filter hahahahaha
I've always wanted to know how he pulled that off
It's the ARP Odyssey and he uses an expression pedal, you can see it at the bottom of the frame at 6:40.
Only one explanation: "Yer a wizard, Herbie"
This is one badass Jazz Group The music speaks for itself This is so relaxing , so lets'get funky!!!
herbie playing with the filter on the synth from 12:00-13:20... totally insane
Yes. Brilliant
Bro. Burke what synthesizer is that. ARP. Mood or prophet
It’s very reminiscent of Jimmy Page’s theremin in Whole Lotta Love, though not the same instrument.

06:55 🔥
Groove Rules!
I can see why he said Gadd though, Traditional gripped playing of this deep deep pocket funk with jazz sensibilities towards variation.
how are the courses going?
Hi you doing alright??
What happen to music these days? The musicianship defiantly has not progressed. Herbie and his crew were a tight group!
musicianship has progressed, but it doesn't get the same attention it use to
its too easy to compose something fantastic with out a fantastic amount of skill because of the technology
agreed and creative recesses of mine are not used as much to harness the excellent musicianship seen here. No way musicianship has progressed only the technology has progressed and the musicians talent has regressed... Awesome performance by Herbie and the Headhunters though

Thank you for posting this. Amazing sound and great visuals.

If not for the visionary Sun Ra, this edition of Herbie Hancock's would not even exist.

La polyvalence en music ça compte beaucoup

So much control! Awesome!
GROOVY
Shekere LIKE A BOSS
Delicious!
Same instrument set up as Season 2 of the Starsky and Hutch intro
Not Steve Gadd. Do your homework. This is the iconic bad ass Mike Clark.
If you notice, as keyboardist, Herbie is playing the rhythm and lead at the same time! Both hands on two different keyboards. This is virtuoso playing!

Herbie's using an expression pedal, you can see it at the bottom of the frame at 6:40

Too much acid and funk but I'll take some more
The great Steve Gadd on the drums !!!!!!
Mike Clarke on drums, not Gadd.
THE PHENOMENAL MR. MICHAEL CLARK ON DRUMS; THE FUNKIEST WHITE MAN TO EVER PLAY THE DRUMS; NEXT TO MR. GREG ERRICO OF SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE. TWO OF THE GREATEST EVER.
Further proof race has very little to do with anything!!! Dude is a nasty beast on the trap set!!!
What about Andy Newmark!
You should add Bobby Z (Prince and the Revolution) and John Robinson (Rufus and Chaka Kahn) to that list.
Dave Garibaldi of TOP; with Rocco Prestia, proof that Italians, at least, can get, and stay VERY funky indeed...
Increíble
guhrooovy!
