Interesting coincidence; January 2004, on at least one day that month I was filming trains at the other end of the line around Hastings, Crowhurst, Rye and Winchelsea, possibly while you were dong some of this video in London...

Weird to think that we still had slam-door trains running in the same year that Saw was released...

Final year of the VEPs and CIGs, and of the Routemasters outside

In 2003, at the age of 16, I moved to London. I had never seen a slam door train on the rails before and was astonished to see them still plying their trade down here. The first time I saw one I assumed it was a museum excursion.

But goodness, that 465 arriving at 1:05; any company that could turn out a train looking in that state deserved to lose its franchise

A very frequent sight at the time sadly. Oddly the networkers look much newer and in better condition now than they did 17 years ago. Traveling on the slammers in these final years wasn't much fun either - you can see how filthy they are here - I remember trying to avoid brushing against the doors when getting on and off, as you'd end up being covered in dirt. And you couldn't see anything out of the windows. Connex just didn't care about train cleaning at all.

Compared to what's being done to current freight stock today, that graffiti is minimal. There also seems to be a re-emergence of attention to passenger stock, possibly only being kept in check by more stringent security measures. But the spray boys certainly haven't gone away...and as for tagging, what mindless vandalism is that...suppose we should be grateful they can write.

@@tjfSIMConnex's running of the franchise and it's maintenance of stock was deplorable
The EPBs had long gone since 1995 and the CIGs/CEPs hasn't much time left.😢

Do you have any videos’ of Class 365 in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s?

I didn't start filming till 2003 and I believe that they passed over to WAGN sometime in 2004, so I'm not to sure. I should have a couple of shots.

I've had a chance to look through my earliest footage and unfortunately I've only found one other shot of a 365 which is in Connex blue/yellow livery. I must have kept missing them back then! It'll feature in the next From the Archives no 21 when I post it on Thursday.

do you have any shots of salmmers going through brixton?

That Connex livery was atrocious! It's just not how VEPs should have looked, but it was like a metaphor for them. They're going soon so who cares what they look like..... the NSE was really good.
