THEORY: Renny Harlin (or whoever hired him to make this thing) wanted to do a Halloween 2018/Kills/Ends-style trilogy of sequels to the original film. But they couldn't get Scott Speedman or Liv Tyler back, the studio wouldn't put up the money... whatever. So they had to half-heartedly do a retread of the first film, in order to set up a new character to put through the motions of those planned sequels. And what will those motions consist of? Madeline Petsch (instead of James or Kristen) going back to that creepy town and eventually uncovering the identities and origin of The Strangers.
I think before the movie came out, it was marketed as a prequel. But now (if you look at IMDB trivia) they revealed in an interview it’s only inspired by the original and meant to be a new trilogy.🤷🏻♂️
@@Nimble.ninja910I think the first film worked so well bc of the surprise of it. Idk about anyone else but when I went into the first strangers film I wasn’t expecting much. I think it would have been a really fun prequel if the couple are kinda weird and things seem a little off about them, then after "the strangers" show up they end up overpowering and killing them then realizing they actually enjoyed the experience and after disposing of the bodies they take the masks and decide to start killing thus the surprise origin story of Pinup Girl and the man in the mask.

The Strangers (2008) became a favorite horror film for me. Unexpectedly watched the movie by chance and the suspense creeped me the FK out. I "was" (aight, still am) looking forward to "Chapter 1" because...*drumroll*..I had no idea there was a sequel. Didn't know it existed. Watching the trailer for "Chapter 1" had me AMPED! Prey At Night started off with massive potential and it quickly falls off. It's just a re-tread of the first film but in a bigger space (a trailer park). Sadly, they squander the premise just to repeat one-liners and have 2 dipshit teens kill off all 3 strangers. Hopefully Chapter 1 is what Stab is in the Scream universe. I want chapter two to start in a movie theater where they’re watching chapter 1 but I KNOW that’s not what we have in store 😭
I can see why folks would have fun with the second strangers movie but they really were super powered in that one too. Lots of teleporting, Baghead was literally unkillable. He was set on fire and hit by cars and all sorts and didn't really slow down. I was one of those folks who walked out of the theater rolling my eyes because it felt so generic. It sucks to see them try to appeal to folks like me who wanted more slow burn like the first and then completely fumble the execution (pun intended).

I kept watching and as you said, they literally copied and pasted from the original. The characters were insufferable and stupid. I finished the movie and left very annoyed.
You should have added how, in the beginning, it mentioned that these murders were "brutal." Like, they only got stabbed in the stomach, which I'm sure is painful, but there are definitely more ways to die that can be brutal. 😅😂🤣
Great review! My expectations going in weren't high and I wasn't that disappointed. I found Chapter 1 to be overall watchable, with the repeats of plot beats from the original and bad decisions really taking me out of the experience. In terms of good words about the movie - the sound design was surprisingly good.
@FinalGirl09 nah, it's a prequel. They even marketed it as such. There's no indication they want to wash their hands of the first two films, given they're riding its coattails, hoping this copy/paste slop would pass for a Strangers movie. 😂
@@RecluseBootsy Saw it last Thursday it's not a prequel it's a reboot, a prequel would take place before the original, this does not. Unless they are time travelers, the original takes place in 2008, this is clearly 2024, they even have a god awful produt placement for the Ally banking app which started in 2009. It's "Chapter 1" of a new 3 part (Chapter) story. The movie is a beat for beat retelling of the original.
Yooooo !! I was getting sooo pissed while watching this movie !! Like why did they even take so long to figure out they needed a weapon !?! 🗑️ The 2nd one was the best as far as the victims fighting back !!!
No reviews that I’ve seen have mentioned the awkward editing. The man in the mask literally hobbles away goofily at one point. It’s all edited so quickly and weirdly.

I'm such a fan of the original & didn't even know that this movie existed until I started seeing reviews popping up. It's telling that they barely advertised & did no pre-screening. I think they realized that the movie was gonna be awful!
I thought so. With that dumbass trailer, with the exact same line and characters. You said it well. Give us something fresh. Like Megan . That you surprisingly turned out great. The sequel is coming
This is the most brutal review I’ve seen from you and it sounds like you were right on target. I almost went to see this at the theater thinking it might be a fun slasher but clearly it wasn’t even that. Thanks for sparring me the torture. Really curious, the OG was such a simple yet effective premise-to me it didn’t merit a “franchise”. Do you think there really is material for an effective “Stangers” franchise that doesn’t just rehash the original premise less effectively or even worse offer over exposition that dilutes the terror of the OG? I have not seen “Strangers Prey at Night” so maybe that is worth a watch?
I’m glad he mentioned the first one’s version of the woman alone being terrorized before the boyfriend comes back. God it was so good in that one. Straight ass in the new one. Also I really prefer the cinematography of the first one by a lot. I like how it looks grittier, more real and intimidating. It’s flat in comparison here.
It was probably like some sort of coping Meganism. They knew they were gonna die anyway, so he just wanted her to know that she loves her one last time. I actually think that was one of the most believable things these characters did in this movie
Tbh with you. I was hoping that considering its a trilogy. We would have started with the origin story of the strangers and worked from there, rather than getting a rehash of the first movie.
"The Strangers Chapter One is upsetting because it's not over yet" bruh you ended this and I spent a good thirty more seconds howling about how shady that was. Thank you.
The guy was so suspicious of the townspeople but when his gf says there may be someone in the house, he brushes it off so quickly as if he didn’t have his own reservations about the place.
As someone who remembers going to the drive in movies as a kid with my family and taking a portable radio just to watch the original The Strangers since I couldn't go see it by myself yet, I was excited for this movie and that it'd be a trilogy. Unfortunately, having seen this movie, I can confidently say I've had more enjoyable migraines and I could make a better home invasion movie with my mom. It cannot be stated how dumb the main characters are in this movie and it honestly feels like a parody, except it supposed to be serious.

It's not supposed to be a prequel, it's the first part of a 3 part remake. There's a Chapter 1, 2, & 3.
@@FinalGirl09 ah makes sense, I was misinformed.
@@Lambdaleth I think them calling it Chapter 1 was a mistake because we were all confused 😂
YES!
I know you like the vibe of it, but I'm so burnt out on the first movement of Moonlight Sonata being used in movies.
I love your videos. I am a huge chicken and can’t watch horror movies, but at the same time I love horror. Your videos make it possible for me to know what happens in the movies I can’t watch but am also morbidly curious about. Thank you
I'm such a fan of the original & didn't even know that this movie existed until I started seeing reviews popping up. It's telling that they barely advertised & did no pre-screening. I think they realized that the movie was gonna be awful!
The movie theatre I was in tonight got more laughs than jump scares and fear
I got two separate ads for The Strangers: Chapter One watching this video…amazing.
These stories are very simple. 3 parts is just stretching it way too thin
Literally just got an ad for the movie when I clicked this vid
They've been teleporting since the first movie which also isnt very good and highly overrated.
i like Madelaine Petsch but i think she chooses some awful projects.
you thought him proposing was sweet?! i was so annoyed they did that. don’t propose to me when we’re about to die
It was probably like some sort of coping Meganism. They knew they were gonna die anyway, so he just wanted her to know that she loves her one last time. I actually think that was one of the most believable things these characters did in this movie
This movie will become inherently clear to anyone who has spent any extended time in Porter Ranch, CA 😅 #purplehaze

I love this channel so much, always excited when I see a new video! hope you’re doing well mate!!
Tbh with you. I was hoping that considering its a trilogy. We would have started with the origin story of the strangers and worked from there, rather than getting a rehash of the first movie.
"The Strangers Chapter One is upsetting because it's not over yet"
bruh you ended this and I spent a good thirty more seconds howling about how shady that was. Thank you.
Only good thing about this movie was the way the cheeseburger looked
Hey Evan, I’m pretty sure I committed on your Halloween videos once or twice, but I thought I’d hit you up again and let you know that your videos are badass. I appreciate your world view of horror, I like your commentary, and I see the vibe you’re shooting for with the channel. I adore it. I’m an editor, and I wanted to know if you needed some help with your videos and such. I’m not too sure of you do everything yourself or not. But if you’d want an extra editor let me know. I’d love to work with you and help your channel grow even more so. Keep kicking ass, stay safe, and I hope to see more from you soon.

them making this a trilogy to be released in the same year-ish reminds me of the success the Fear Street trilogy had but this movie feels like if i wanted to watch it. I should just go watch the original and get the same storyline
I thought the dude who was her BF was a horrible choice. Dude was a wooden board. Had no range
You can tell his disappointment by how far down in the frame he is sitting. Its giving *disappointed dad slumped in his chair with his arms crossed* energy
Crap. I have a first date tomorrow with a chick that is also a huge horror fan... I was planning on taking her to see this 😢
Do it just the same. Let her decide if it's good or not.
it’s a good date movie, just laughable in character choices
Horror fans love shitty movies. It makes for great table discussions afterward.
Three chapters is just overkill
Spiker, is a much more very impressive spring time horror movie of 2009! The story is about young teenage girl invites her friends to an very old house. In her family inheritance of her twin aunt committed suicide many years ago by jumping in front of a moving train of an instand death! The same time she was they friends in town. The most infamous massive numbers of the pink eye albino killer escapes, who lives a death row setentence of police custody in a police very daedly shoot out by jumping in the very cold lake water! The small town sherif still searching out for him! The killer stalks the young teens all the way to the old house will walking on the train tracks! They drive vehicle there in the country towns backwoods. Many people are brutality killed throughout the movies run time. From the same day the night of the early morning light. He believes that's the her aunt's great return. Spiker she sees a ghostly haunting vision of him coming out the water and her dead aunt in a brides maid dress. He finds the very raw metal use full then His favorite very deadly weapon is the rail road spikes! A must see recommend movie to watch at night.🌉 My great inspiring wisdom for today. Have a great fabulous wonderful day.😀
Well my ritual of catching up to series by watching original entries before the new movie ain’t happening with the The Strangers series.
I really liked it it felt fresh and new yet nostalgic I’m excited and hyped for what’s to come💗💗💗
I want a movie where the strangers knock on a cult night ritual and they're the one in trouble
That would actually be a worthwhile clever sequel, unlike this.
I had to leave the theater to go to the bathroom and scream silently because the two of them were SO INFURIATING!
Yeah…. it’s rough
This is the only movie I've ever seen where I was ready to just walk out of the theater, being fine if I never found out how the movie ended. For some reason I stayed
When Ryan missed his wide open chance to shoot one of the masked killers was just soooo stupid
Okay, knowing this is the first entry of a trilogy (why?), and hearing that the small-town locals are hostile and suspicious of our two leads makes me think OH, NO. ARE THEY SAYING THAT THE HAPLESS NUMBSKULLS THAT WERE UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE CAR TROUBLE ARE THE _REAL_ STRANGERS? IS THAT WHERE THEY'RE GOING WITH THIS?
just got an ad for the movie on this video lol
Just stumbled across this channel and have been bingeing a few videos. Keep it up man, great content!
Thank you!
