  • A visit to St. Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford in July 2021. St. Aidan's Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral for the Diocese of Ferns. The present day Cathedral replaced an older Cathedral on the same site which was built in 1809. The foundation stone for the present day cathedral was laid and blessed by Bishop James Keating of Ferns in 1843. The first mass took place in the Cathedral in 1846. The Cathedral was dedicated on 20th May 1860. The spire was completed in 1873. The Cathedral was solemnly consecrated by Bishop James Staunton on 29th June 1946 after the debt from its construction was cleared off. Augustus Welby Pugin designed St. Aidan's Cathedral. A stained glass window of the Immaculate Conception was installed in the great north window in 1885. The high altar was built by Pearse and Sharpe. St. Aidan's Cathedral was restored in 1994.
