    Great video lesson. Just a few questions I'd like to ask:
    1. In the introduction paragraph, you state how other people view this issue and not how YOU see it.
    2. Again in the 2nd and the 3rd paragraphs (body paragraphs), there is no trace of your opinion towards the issue.
    3. And finally the same happens in you conclusion: no personal opinion.
    I'd appreciate it if you explained the points above.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 роки тому +1

      In the introduction, I state twice that the essay gives my view - ‘This essay totally agrees… and ‘I believe…’.
      Hence the rest of the essay is my opinion so I don’t need to state this again.
      The conclusion is a summary of my personal opinion as set out in the whole essay.

    Mrs. Jacky do we need to locate commas in this part 15:07 Especially before the following sentences:
    -because the workload
    -And I am now a gardener
    -and I am much more relaxed
    -even though

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 роки тому

      Commas are one of the hardest punctuation marks to get right and there is often lively academic debate over their use. If the word ‘I’ was to be removed before ‘and’, you would definitely not need commas in these places. They are not necessary before ‘because’ and ‘even though’.
      I am an example of this myself. A year ago I left the teaching profession because the workload had become too great and am now a gardener. I feel fulfilled in this work and am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn far less money.
      However, they could be inserted before the ‘and’ in the two location stated because technically, the use of the word ‘I’ after ‘and’ makes the second half of the sentences independent clauses.
      I am an example of this myself. A year ago I left the teaching profession because the workload had become too great, and I am now a gardener. I feel fulfilled in this work, and I am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn far less money.
      Commas tend to be used more frequently, and generally before ‘and’ in this second situation, in US English. In UK English, they are often omitted.
      I hope this is helpful.

    Hi Jacky.This is such a good explanation.Some of my doubts are :are we allowed to write in the first person for all essay types?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 роки тому +3

      I’m glad you’ve found this lesson helpful.
      For all Task 2 essay types, you can write either in the first person (e.g. In my opinion...) or in the third person (e.g. This essay will argue that…). If you decide to write in the first person, don’t begin your essay this way (e.g. In my opinion… / I believe… / I agree…).
      First, you must paraphrase the question using the third person. You can see this in the following introduction. I have continued in the third person for the second sentence and then changed to the first person to state my opinion.
      "It is argued that earning lots of money has more significance to people than being content in their work. This essay totally disagrees with that statement. I believe that people are increasingly concerned about the risk of stress-related ill-health frequently experienced by people in highly paid positions and they care more about feeling fulfilled at work."

      You can see how I develop the ideas in this introduction on this page of the website: www.ieltsjacky.com/ielts-opinion-essays.html
      I hope this helps.

    Thank you for your effort! I have a concern about the employment of "conjunctive adverbs" such as: "however, therefore, hence, moreover, etc..." which I did not spot in your essay, even though they might be recommended. Based on your experience, are they really mandatory? Using them could utterly increase our score? or do no rules exist? Thanks again.... a great channel btw!

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Joseph. Yes, using conjunctive adverbs appropriately will increase your score. There are no set rules about exactly what to include in your essay. You need to study and understand the marking criteria to know what is required for a high score and, of course, you need to answer the question that has been set.
      I cover conjunctive adverbs in Book 3 of my Ultimate IELTS Grammar Course if you need more help with them.

    Hi Jacky, thanks a million for your amazing tips, they are so practical. I have a question, and I would appreciate if you answer it. I had an academic IELTS mock test 2 weeks ago and the writing examiner told me I shouldn't use personal examples for main body paragraphs of task 2, she said the examples HAVE TO be academic examples. I couldn't find this point through the internet, could you please tell me whether it's correct or not?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mahsa. It's difficult to comment without seeing the essay that was marked. If this was the advice of an IELTS examiner, then I would take what they said to be correct. For the academic exam, my own recommendation is to only use a personal example if you really can't think of an academic example. I hope this helps. I wish you all the best with your exam preparation. • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, linkers are important when used appropriately. You will find them used in many of the essay examples where they are relevant. They are more relevant for some essay types than others. I cover them in my vocabulary lessons and in my grammar course.
      Your essay practice is good. It sounds like you have excellent English language skills and understand the more complex grammar structures, which many students do not.

    Do we have to stick to one opinion or can we give a balanced view point describing both the ideas and not choose one particularly?

    • @anastasiakutateladze5653
      @anastasiakutateladze5653 4 дні тому

      you could do this but it looses its coherence and cohesion sadly. It might be very confusing for the examiner, that's why it is recommended to just stick to one opinion

      @@IELTSJackyI easily get more than 2 or 3 ideas. The problem occurs when i have to describe them. For instance, i do plan a lot; however, when it comes to execute the whole plane, i often experience problem of not sticking to the plan or not able to write everything, or sometimes end up giving all the information in one sentence only. Undoutedly, i can think of examples as well, but the problem is how to expand one main topic so that i can atleast write 90 words in One paragraph, fulfilling my TA criteria.

    at 9:19 Why did you use past-tense "concerned" instead of "concern"? "I believe that people are increasingly concernED about..." I couldn't find any reason why we would use past tense here

      In this context, 'concerned' is an adjective, not a verb. I'm afraid that the English language is very confusing at times.

    1) Using personal experience in the essay is discouraged in IELTS formal essay. I believe there is a better way to explain the personal experience in a 'generic' way which is missing in this essay and can be improved this way.
    2) idea no 2 perfectly suits the side which is agreed to that job satisfaction gives a sense of fulfillment (by having less stress) but idea no 1 is actually the disadvantage of having a high salary job but not the benefits of job satisfaction itself. So I think it could be improved in a way to provide one more benefit of job satisfaction e.g. job satisfaction has more chances of being a successful person in the field of job is being done because of personal interest.
    @jacky: can you please provide your feedback on the above points please. Thank you in advance.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  4 роки тому

      Hi Kamran,
      Thank you for your comment.
      In many types of Task 2 essays, you are asked for your view or opinion. Therefore, personal experience is expected. However, you don’t have to give your true opinion and can use ideas to support whichever point of view you decide to argue.
      I note your points regarding how you think this essay could be improved. Remember, the examiner is not looking for the perfect answer but for an appropriate answer to the question using appropriate vocabulary.
      Best regards,
      Jacky

      @@IELTSJacky Thanks for your quick feedback. I agree that question ask our own opinion but personal experience by using 'I' and 'my uncle' not appropriate for the formal essay to have bank 7-8 band essay which examiner would be expected. that's why I think it can be improved to be more generically written in a much more mature way. However, your given essay structure is perfect by all means.

      No, you should take one side of the argument or the other. You don't have to agree with this opinion in real life. Just argue for it in your essay. Having said that, your essay will be easier to write if you do agree with the opinion you give. Jacky

      @@margiyagnik3101 It's confusing for you when you get conflicting advice from tutors. The appropriate type of example to give will depend on the specific question you are asked. If you can give a general example outside your personal experience then that is the better option but if the only example you can think of is a personal one, it's fine to use. I hope this helps. Jacky
