As someone who doesn`t live in the area, is there two stations at Kirkby? A Merseyrail one and a Northern one? Are they connected? I am assuming this at one time was a through railway line?
Hi Andrew yes there's 2 platforms the station used to be a through line but has been separated at kirkby so one end is electrified which is the merseyrail that terminates at kirkby then there is another line from kirkby to Wigan which is northern there are plans to reconnect the track and carry on to another new station
I bet it was an interesting challenge for them, I remember being a young lad seeing a near identical crash at this station in the 90s, thanks for watching. Tom
I was a driver at Crewe when the previous accident happened and took the breakdown from Crewe to Kirkby it involved I think the first train of the day and kids had put oil on the track the previous night after the last train had gone bloody stupid idiots could have killed some one
luckily it was only the driver and guard onboard that train i think, i never knew that it was from kids doing that, thanks for the info and for watching. Tom
Yes that's obvious the question is why it was going so fast the speed limit on the approach to buffers would never be that high and what can be done to lower the risk of it happening again.
I'd say! lol I used to drive trains their [Wigan to Kirby] and we are taught [good practice] to approach dead-end platforms at 15mph [some do 20mph] and to reduce speed by half, half way down the platform [so 7-8mph] taking into consideration railhead/weather conditions, the braking of the train etc. There should have been two smaller TPWS overspeed grids there [an 'arming' and a 'triggering' grid usually set between 8-10mph]. Control signals have them both together so look bigger. At that speed, one has to take into consideration the railhead and the brake conditions etc. for the effectiveness of the TPWS grids and if it was deliberate [the driver can press the TPWS 'override' button in cab] or poor route knowledge/distractions [I read that the driver was going for their bag which is bad practice as should do it when the train has stopped]. But if the train is going so fast [as it seems to be in this case], the safety measures can only reduce the end result impact and not prevent it.
The 507/8’s were fitted with the original ‘WSSP’ (anti lock brakes/ traction control), and it was/ is ruthless in how it removes the braking controls from the driver. I personally experienced a runaway on a train destined for Ormskirk, but had accidentally been routed to Kirkby. The brakes were applied 1/2 mile before the junction signal, we finally stopped in the platform at Rice Lane. WSSP had relieved me of all control over the braking and taught a valuable lesson. That said, I throughly enjoyed working those units and they could really accelerate and decelerate on a dry rail.
I think its deffo a write of and with the new trains being introduced later this year the 507s are due to be scrapped soon anyway, am hoping to get out and film a few more before they do go
Hi Ian they certainly are bumpy ill still miss them when there gone ive known these trains all my life traveling from kirkby to liverpool central it will certainly be strange no longer seeing them in the future.
i didnt get a chance unfortunatly i drove past the bridge before and its just the front 2 coaches of 507006 to be dragged away now there was a class 66 in position ready to tow it
@@stephensmith4480 where did you get that from? The current info from the RAIB doesn't say anything about the TPWS override being used. So far they've just said that the train approached at 42mph then there was an emergency brake application and the train hit the buffers at 28mph
@@stephensmith4480 Well although you could very well know for a fact but I don't know you from adam so I'll wait till I've seen a reliable source before I pay too much notice to that. I thought the override is supposed to cancel after passing a train stop protecting a signal so the overspend sensors protecting the buffers should still have ordered a brake demand seems more like TPWS was isolated or overwise malfunctioned to me.
i herd thats the plan in the not to distant future there extending the mersey rail to a new station in kirkby with another 2 platforms one for the existing wigan line and one for the new skemersdale line there suppose to be rebuilding
Am sure it wouldn't have suffered much damage but these units are due to be replaced this year anyway so unless they need it back in service I'd say it will likely be going to scrap aswell

@Steam Guy am not complaining as I haven't been able to travel on them much this past year for obvious reasons so hopefully when we're aloud to travel again I can do a few more trips on the merseyrail before there replaced, it will be sad to see them go as I've nown these trains all my life

I wonder if Merseyrail can tell us who was behind that staged incident on the train last year of the video of a Transport officer harassing someone for not wearing a face mask?. When I saw that I got the feeling it was staged to frighten and intimidate people into complying. If that was genuine then they had no right to do that because mask wearing is not a law it's a guideline which cannot be enforced. I've travelled on the train countless times since this nonsense started and I have not once been challenged or been harassed in any way for not wearing a face covering. Shame on the muppets participating in these fake videos.
This is even better footage than the Echo and TV news!
thanks mate much appreciated

The RAIB has concluded that the unit was too quick to stop in the station it was travelling 42mph which is a little bit too fast
I think that was very obvious anyway
