  • It's week 7 of our 10 week pantry challenge!
This week I make homemade French bread for the first time! It was delicious! Here is the recipe link: www.iheartnapt... If you read the recipe online and the printed version you will see they differ a little bit. I followed the printed recipe when you said to use the paddle, but you will see the online version says to use the dough hook. I have been told to use the hook and after using the paddle I can see why! Happy Baking!
I also make tortillas for the first time this week too! I found this recipe on ‪@1870s‬ . Rachel is just amazing and I was excited to see a simple recipe. Mix all of the ingredients together and knead. Let rest prior to rolling out tortillas! Makes 12 tortillas!
    Recipe:
    3 cups flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    1/3 c oil
    1 c warm water
I am excited to say I decided to join Jessica ‪@threerivershomestead‬ for her pantry challenge.
10 weeks for under $10 would mean less than $100 for 10 weeks! This would help our budget immensely!
Jessica's first rule is that you make your own rules for your family! I love this because we are all different!
    My rules for MY challenge:
    1. Spend no more than $10 a week on groceries
    2. Focus on dairy and fresh produce for the $10
    3. Meal Plan from my pantry and freezers before going to the store
    4. Document my pantry before and after the challenge
    5. Be 100% transparent and real
    6. Give myself some grace
    7. Use prepper pantry budget only in the event of an extreme sale ($100 is budgeted for January)
See my pantry before the start of my challenge here:

I love how the challenge is make your own rules. My rule is very simple, no budget just can’t buy anything for the freezer or pantry. Found some seriously old riced cauliflower that I don’t think I would have found in time if it weren’t for the pantry challenge 😂

Yes!! That is what makes this challenge so amazing! We all need and want different things for our pantries and budgets! I love this idea for your challenge!! Haha...ohhh I have found some interesting stuff so far.

I make sourdough. Very important to use unbleached flour in your starter. I use bread flour with a small amount whole wheat for a more active starter. Once it got going really good, I keep it in the refrigerator most of the time. Super easy

I do enjoy your videos..I’m a seasoned cook/baker or at least I like to think so..lol..I learned something new which is why I love watching YT videos to learn another money saving tip or in watching you -learned another way to season food..I never thought to mix in my case it would be butter or oil and mix the seasoning to make a rub for my chicken or meat in general..I always coat first in oil/butter then sprinkle on the seasonings that most of the time don’t completely cover a chicken or a Turkey..Thanks.
.I have made tortillas many years ago and by the time I got done rolling them all out I was breaking a sweat and never made them again..lol..I now realize it’s because I never let them rest so now I know..going to try my hand at making them tomorrow.
If interested since I know you work many hours is Survival HT here on UA-cam can show you how to make a sourdough starter that you don’t need to discard or feed everyday..I plan on learning this skill since I have never tried to make it..I’m the type that I will try it just to learn the skill even if I never plan on using regularly.

Thank you so much! I am so excited you learned a few things!! Did you try tortillas again? I would love to hear how they turned out! That sounds interesting for the sourdough!! Thank you for sharing!!

I killed my budget this month when I FINALLY inventoried my chest freezer and realized I needed meats. I then went to my local butchers' website and saw an awesome sale on different meat packages so I bought a smaller package for now and a much larger one for next few months. Needless to say, I will be working through my pantry challenge for an additional month.

I love bread making and there are so many great recipes. I have tried sourdough three times and killed it each time so I have given up. Lasagna is the best to make one for now and one for later. Individual lasagnas are great too. Would love the French bread recipe you used.

Hi Marlene 👋 Great job on the challenge. I'm so glad you bought that Coke and Sprite with your pantry money. I couldn't believe the price. I would have stocked up, too. I only drink water and juice, but my whole family loves Coke. Anyway, delicious looking meals. The French bread loaves turned our amazing, and that lasagna looked so good. I've never made homemade tortillas cause I don't eat Mexican much, but the chef likes it, so I'll give them a try. Thanks for sharing, and have a blessed night XO 🤗 😘 💕

Today I went to the Aldi. I stuck within my budget. Though I’d like to get closer to 20 than have a budget of between 20 and 25. My high end of my budget is 25-30. I’ve decided to separate my spending at Aldi if I buy anything that’s not food I do a separate order. The last couple of times I’ve gone I only get one nonessential item. Well to be honest the cheese I bought technically is a nonessential item. I do have some cheese at home I could use for the Super Bowl. Today’s total was 21 something and the Aldi find total was 5 something after taxes.
What was bad was I went to DT to see what they had. I mainly picked up deco items rather than food. I even got some glassware for coworkers. 51 something. Oh the only good thing about DT was I picked up some seeds to plant in my flower pot terrace. I need to go check about DT to see if they have the flower pots that I want like the ones I got from Aldi last year. I’m bummed that I didn’t get them there last year because I paid more at Aldi. I even got extra seeds so when I start using my in house garden thing I have. I’ll be able to have spinach and lettuce all summer and winter long. I got 4 spinach and 4 lettuce. I got some other seeds as well.

Amanda this is amazing! I always see the grocery hauls with Aldi in them and I wish there was an Aldi somewhere near me! 🤣🤣 I looked a few years ago and there isn't even one in a surrounding state! 🥹
It is amazing how much you can spend at DT! 🤣🤣 Wonderful on the seeds!

Ok, I've done bread for 17 years with a KitchenAid. You used the wrong attachment. Do you have a dough hook? Second the mixer should be used on speed 2 for bread. The mixer will literally almost clean the bow when there is enough flour .The mixer will need the bread for you. So less stress on your hands.

    • @SnowGardener
      @SnowGardener  8 місяців тому +1

Hi Wendy! Thank you so much for your input. I followed the recipe and it said paddle attachment...haha. My husband and I were talking about the dough hook and wondering why the recipe didn't call for that. Thank you so much for your input! This was the first time using my mixer for bread!!

Any suggestions for prepper pantry friendly snacks for kids? A good portion of my budget is spent on snack foods for kids!

    • @SnowGardener
      @SnowGardener  8 місяців тому

Hi Crystal! I don't have any kiddos at home anymore but I remember those days! My kids would eat me out of house and home! My 18 year old son moved out last year, but boy that kid could eat. We would always have a lot of applesauce, nuts, crackers (goldfish and all kinds of crackers), canned fruit, peanut butter (for apples, sandwiches, crackers, celery, etc), tuna, and a small amount of candy (nut free last longer). You can also make your own granola bars, protein balls and so much more. It really depends on what you like to feed your kiddos and what you can find on sale. I used to pick up store bought snacks when they would go on sale (fruit snacks, granola bars, poptarts). The ideas are endless, but the important thing for a prepper pantry is you need to get them when they are priced right and figure out what a good amount of a stockpile is good for you and your family. I hope this helps a little.
