  • EPISODE #52: There are some pieces of firewood I just can’t bring myself to throw in the wood stove. For this episode I take a hidden gem I found last fall, a piece of swirly spalted maple, and show you my method for turning my tree trash into designer charcuterie board treasure. They make unique gifts and you can finish them quickly without a lot of effort. Check it out -- you’ll be servin’ up some high styling snacks before you know it!

@@EpicWoodworking Found that refined walnut oil is the perfect finish for these.

Tom this week's SNL was another educational session for me. I heard of spalted maple, and have seen it, but did not know how the wood gets it swirly marble look, which I like alot. I thought that was the way the tree grow. That tells, how much I know about different types of wood and woodworking. Even after a tree has fallen nature is still working its beauty in the wood. I never had, or made anything out of it... I will now. Thank you for the inspiration Iam always learning from you thank you again. I will be watching EMGW this Saturday, also see you next week on Tuesdays bench stool project.

    Shellac works great.

Thank s Dave, yes, I love shellac. But prefer not to use a “film” finish like shellac for a board like this that may get cut and wet. 👍

Doctor's Woodshop finish is made from walnut oil, not as dark as Waterlox. Odies Oil is a good one too.

Thank you for another great SNL! What type of file is that in the video you were using. Has the coarse/fine with the convex side.

Thanks Kevin! Yes, it was nice to do a small project without a lot of complexity that gives a nice payoff depending on the choice of materials.
And here’s a link to that file I used last night -- it's a Swiss Pattern File by Grobet Vulcrylic 8": amzn.to/2SQwT4C
