Inspirational! Just what I needed to start my own recycled Christiania style bike. I remember seeing them in Copenhagen for the first time and just being blown away. Thanks for sharing. Much love from Australia
What an awesome video! Great quality/production, excellent storytelling, super informative. Helping people in need with cheap, clean, simple transportation. You captured your family, your community --your life-- beautify. Inspirational on every level, thanks for your efforts.
Thumbs up to you and your kids. I think that considering what you have to work with, you seem to find a way to make it work, I admire that, not everyone has the money or the top of the line tools to get the job done, so us do it yourselfers make things work the best way we can, it may brake, but we fix it, or engineer it better. I also have sent many bicycles and parts to Africa and am happy to see bicycles in use. Keep up the good work.
Nice demo - thank you - good to see you having a bash with the welding. May I ask if you actually used bearings on the pivot tube.? I am considering building a modular trike myself. I think they are brilliant. I daresay people like myself have gleaned a great deal from observing your build. Very generous !
Two thumbs up for building something useful from scrap. Well done, considering what you had available to work with. I think the cargo platform might be more useful as a trailer that attaches to the seat base tube on a "normal" bicycle with a goose-neck type hitch.
My inspiration for this bike was the Christiania style bikes that you see roaming around Copenhagen - they have two wheels in the front that swivel. I also might add a rear cargo rack to increase the capacity.
se você quer que pare de quebrar neste lugar da direção deve colocar molas nas rodas para quebra o impacto com os buracos assim diminuirá o atrito que a direção recebe. vc esta de parabéns!
Make it easier for them, I can see six rear gears, make them operational, it's easy. I would also try to find crank arm with three speeds. That bike could go pretty much everywhere you want it to go. But nice job, I'm gathering ideas for something like this.
How did the final mod hold up? how about switching the head tube pivot for a car wheel hub set up? I've seen it done on swing away rear tire holders, held up even with the weight. Also great to see bikes being put to use, I worked with a collective in Chicago and we used to send containers full out to africa. looks like awesome fun!
All my respect for the hard work. i think you should have put the tire closer to the steering bars I think there is too much weight on the center and nothing there to reinforce it.

With that steering pivot, all you had to do was to brace it in three directions, from the lowest point to the bottom of cargo box. The bracing would be two side bracings and one front bracing, that would have held that pivot . You used a an unbraced Colum effect which pits a lot of lad on the base but if a column is braced as a high communication mast normally is then that would have held at any load. The braces would be able to take compression and tension so they would be pipes. and no need to weld them just crew them in. at about 45 degrees will do. .
Specially with the older cargo bikes the bottom side of the steering pin has a support strip to the sides of the loading area. The joint has to take the big lever force between the passenger and the cargo.
Given how old this is, my comment is for other viewers..Welding on hardened steel like bearing races doesn't work, it cracks. What I did was use the entire forks of a bike and weld the forks to the metal, not just the pivot. hope that makes sense.
eh?you're cutting with hacksaws and handsaws?what happened to the effortless two second job of using metal cutting chopsaws and angle grinders?guillotines?reciprocating saws? and so forth?
There's a problem. The contact point between the cargo and bicycle body should be flat enough to tolerate weight and steering so you have to make a flat ball bearing base ..the is the only solution to avoid breaking of welding at contact point .
Thsnk you as i am going to be building a few my self. And this helps me look at things to not do and things to try. Thank you for your trys and headaches.
Much easier to just make a side-car. No mods to the bike, just place the 3rd tire in the correct spot. No added weight to the steering. Add a pillion seat and a single pannier (saddle-bag)
Hello, thanks for sharing this idea. I tried to produce something close to this and I find out that the rider almost fall off sideways when they do a sharp turn. How did you solve this problem?
Hello, I'm really interest in to the project of building cargo bike in Ivory Cost. Can we tall about how you can help me on this project? Looking forward to your answer.
No offence but you need to learn how to weld because well first off your not holding a beed that tacking won't hold very good second stick arc thats only for heavy metal you need. Like a flux core mig it would be alot better and you can do alot more with it.. But good vid i dont want to sound mean just try to get a better welder
Derek Graham Thanks for the advice. I've actually improved quite a bit since then. It is tempting to use a flux core (in fact if you send me one I'll use it!), but stick welding is king here in africa and I'm wanting to see developmental change (like folks making bikes like this to use as a small business, etc) from the inside and hence need to work with what they have. When in Rome, ...
bonjour je travail avec des velos porteur pour des personnes handicapés, et au niveau de l'axe sous le plateau mobile il y a un amortisseur de direction (style hydraulique) posé a partir de l'axe fixe jusqu'au plateau mobile. (super machine). Hello I work with bikes carrier for people handicapped persons, and in Level of the axis under the mobile tray(plateau) there is a shock absorber of Direction(Management) ( hydraulic put style) has to leave the fixed axis up to the mobile tray(plateau). Hi there, is this a current ongoing cargo trike building company? If so may I please have the link to your web site or contact info as well a quote for a basic tricycle ice cream closed cargo box style bike able to bike along the rough rodes of Africa.
got that right, man! it's pretty hard to find a worse welder than me. i'd be starving if i had to survive on this for a living!

If every weld did that much good where it is needed this would be a better world. Respect!

michael carson Hey that was well said even if what you wrote was a year ago . Peace and much respect to you !
Very nice. I'd probably use my everlast mig welder if I attempted this project for myself.
Nice demo - thank you - good to see you having a bash with the welding.

I am sure that it is always better to have an eye on the load when it's in front, when riding.
Wish my kids would build bikes with me! COOL!
Amazing..,bro,.....

Dude, sick build.. Hows it working out? Do you still have it? This video was published like 5 years ago lol
Very nice

Legal a iniciativa!!!!
Also on the christiana type trikes, the rear pivot is angled to help make the steering less twitchy
good

Good job 👊
Молодец👍руки с правильного места
It's still kicking around doing the job, but I prefer my newest build - a long tail cargo.
I prefer watching the front load in my Long John.
Dang I wuna see more vids like this... cool stuff guys.. can only improve from the first prototype....

top marks for effort mate , keep trying you will get better at it
congratulations,, you are awesome job... yess. dammmm from venezuela
Very naice
nice work
Considering where you are you have quite the styling shop !! You weld like me but what the hell eh ? What were your plans ??
Specially with the older cargo bikes the bottom side of the steering pin has a support strip to the sides of the loading area. The joint has to take the big lever force between the passenger and the cargo.
Nice performance
how is it going? is it working good now? good job!

Right on, man! I'm taking any and all donations of chop saws, guillotines, and waterjets!
good thing hes wearing hes steel toe boots and leather gloves 👍

I really want a Christiana Box Bike but I don't have $2800 to spare. I'd love to try to build one myself. Is yours still doing the job?
But that’s very good ingenious
Projeto falido infelizmente... mas gostei muito do vídeo.

Where does the pillion seat go, behind the bike or in front, or beside ie on the sidecar?
Aptera.....cool
Very nice. Pls share the dimensions and your contacts pls
Best
Great Job! :)
Hello, thanks for sharing this idea. I tried to produce something close to this and I find out that the rider almost fall off sideways when they do a sharp turn.
How did you solve this problem?
Is that the problem with all tricycles?
If the rear frame can lean over into turns, would that be possible?
yu cann add bering.. on bucket.. can strong...
Those are some smart kids :)
