I have family in Greece on one of the islands, Chios! It’s not too touristy but still lots to do :) I try visiting every other summer. I’ve visited Athens once when I was little but I hope I can go back soon! Your videos are the best, I love that you give such great advice while sharing the fun in traveling! I hope you enjoy your stay in Greece!!
I like how you guys give realistic budgets, not the typical you tube "800 a month". As a solo male traveller, I spend considerably more. I eat out, and travel faster. I am currently in Germany- very few international tourists. I concur, that slow travel is significantly less expensive! I also enjoy a bargain, but will spend whatever is required. I prefer value over cost. After 35 years of travel and over 120 countries, covid gives a unique opportunity to see world famous sites without the crowds. Accomodation costs are definitely lower. Be safe.
😂 Haha yes I used to feel like I must be doing something wrong when I would see those ultra low budgets. Then I realized we all have different standards of comfort in order to enjoy life! After so much travel experience, you must be a pro at sussing out whether an experience is "worth it" for you. Glad you are able to continue enjoying your travels during these times. All the best!
@@OurFreedomYears not so sure I am a pro. I find people are similar all over the world, treat them with respect, " when in Rome", goes a long way. My best advice is to travel very light, less than 8 kg. I use a 25L backpack, and a small slingpod for day to day. Be safe!

Yes the heat was quite something... reminded us a bit of our years in Singapore!😂 Fortunately we found somewhere cooler in Greece to spend our September. More on that soon...!
I am trying so hard not to do the count down. But I have 15months left to retire at 51. You said it’s not healthy to count down, so keep up the wonderful stories to keep me distracted. My field is rough day by day so I need this to look forward to. (This excitement came up after seeing that big plate of meat and veggies) some people I talk to about traveling like this think it’s crazy especially, not having a home. I realize this life style is like being part of a 1%. A lot of people just don’t know about this lifestyle. As far as not having a home, I say, I may not own a home but I have access to everywhere. Everything that you own and try to enjoy this lifestyle, you might as well connect a chain to your belt because each of those items is going to have you keep looking back and wondering.
Those 15 months will just fly by! You are in the home stretch with lots of adventure ahead, As for owning a home and all the stuff that goes in it, we felt pretty liberated and happy once we downsized to just a couple of suitcases. 😊
I just love your videos and following your adventures. Your travel style is very similar to my own and I really value your insights and information. Thanks for all your ideas and tips. X

Definitely have Greece on my list of places to see. Great tip about the Rick Steves walking tour. That would be a fun thing to do whilst getting some exercise at the same time and keeping costs down. Interesting to see the price comparison of the different countries too :-)

II have been to Athens, but through this video I could see new areas of the city that I didn't visit before. I love Athens and this video is very informative, it is great. Thank you so much!
Excellent video! I brought my daughter here to Greece last year (her first time ever) for her 'Sweet 16' birthday, and we had a total blast! She met her cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., and I took her to her ancestral villages of Dimitsana and Nafpaktos (small mountain villages above, actually), and we were smitten by the beauty and character of the places. So much so that we are here, again! I am typing this from the Pagrati section of Athens, while staying at my cousin's penthouse apartment overlooking the Lycabettus hill. Yes, Athens has changed a lot since I used to come here as a kid and teen in the 70's with Olympic Airways Boeing 707's, but it has improved in many ways. We are here for 3 weeks again total (like last year), and I am a bit sad that we are flying home (New Jersey to visit my mom, then driving to Cleveland) in 2 days. At least we got to spend both our August birthdays here with relatives!
Thanks for another great video! Where did you stay in Athens? We're heaving to Athens for a month starting in late September. We were thinking about staying in Plaka, but we're not sure if there are better options for still being close to everything while getting a more local experience (and having closer access to less expensive restaurants and grocers).
We stayed in this Airbnb www.airbnb.ca/rooms/41543808 - you can check out the surrounding area. Our apartment was very beautiful and the host was fantastic but the surrounding area was a little rough around the edges -- lots of homelessness. However, there were many excellent restaurants within walking distance. Plaka might be a bit touristy and expensive although very scenic.
We do try to manage our budgets pretty closely. So if a city has more affordable rent, we feel free to spend the rest on meals out and entertainment. Watch for our 2020 spending summary...it comes out later this month!
I love these cost of living videos. Congratulations on getting rid of your storage unit. That will really add up over the course of a lifetime. I look forward to seeing where you go next. I'm days away from launching my nomadic life and before the pandemic planned to fly to Greece next week! That will have to wait for now, but eventually I'll get there. It's nice to live vicariously through you two. Nice haircut Jillian.

Thanks so much -- that's great to hear! 😊 If you want to catch up with our travels, we've been in Croatia for the past few months and just loving it! ua-cam.com/video/C0KKzq8E1hM/v-deo.html
I lived in Athens for 15 years and I want to stay there for a while but was worried about my dog. She barks every time she hears anything. $1,300 for a month? August is the month that Athenians leaves for the country side.
August was certainly a bit too hot for Athens but we still had a great time! We found our experience to be very good with two dogs...no trouble getting seated in restaurants or going on transit.
We really enjoyed this video! Your budget is amazingly similar to ours and very realistic. In Mar/Apr/May we averaged US$2,000 because of the virus situation. In Feb and since June we've been around US$2,500 per month although we're "splurging" this month renting a car -- at US$ 15 per day+tolls+gas (US$ 5.46 per gallon ugh!!!), exploring beautiful Croatia, we thought is was well worth it. We are seriously considering making Athens our next stop after Croatia but there are so many mixed reviews/news about this city. Checking a number of travel websites, all the contradictory opinions makes it very difficult to reach a final decision. Europe is at the start of a 2nd wave and daily cases are increasing rapidly across the whole EU. New lock-downs and flight /corridor cancellations are being considered if not already implemented, eg. Spain, Portugal, UK, France... BTW, did Gillian have to pay for the PCR test at the Athens airport? Your video did add new perspective and food-for-thought which we greatly appreciate. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks! It's nice to hear that our spend is within reason for fellow nomads. The COVID test at the Athens airport was free and only took a few minutes. They seemed very well organised but, of course, the airport is seeing a fraction of the usual traffic. We enjoyed our time in Athens but wouldn't necessarily recommend a full month there for most people as it is seeing economic hardship in many neighbourhoods. For us, it was the right choice since it was peak season and quite pricey in other prime locations. If you're traveling to Greece in the off season, you would have your pick of options on the islands. Are you still in Croatia? Any top recommendations to share?
@@OurFreedomYears Thanks for your reply and the information. We have to leave Croatia (90 day visa-free allowance) at the beginning of November but wish to return to the U.S. only in January. I don't think Greece ever recovered from the debt crisis which started in 2009 and now got hit again. I hope they, and most countries globally, can pull through. We plan to continue our journey south, eventually to Dubrovnik for 2 weeks. Along the way we'll make stops at Sibenik, Makarska and a few others and a day or two on one of the many islands dotting the Dalmatian coast line. We are trying to avoid Split since it's the covid epicenter of Croatia unfortunately. Zagreb is a must see and I think 2 weeks were perfect. I don't recommend more than a week in Rijeka. 2 days to explore the few local attractions (Trsat castle and the city) and a couple day trips up the coast to see the neighboring towns of Volosko, Opatija and Luvran. These are real gems! Renting a car to explore Istria is a must. We did day trips (1-2 hour drive from Porec where we based) to Pula, Rovijn, Novigrad, Vsar and Umag on the coast, and Buzet, Pizin, Motovun and Groznjan in the interior. Groznjan was amazing. We'd be happy to share more specific details if we can connect privately.

I have relatives who went to Italy and it is the same there, very little tourists. I would love to go to greece in winter or autumn, once the pandemic is over. Summer months are too hot even to spend on the beach. In a month we will go over the boarder to Austria, lets hope it stays open

Great question! We spent six years living in Singapore so we had amazing opportunities to explore much of the region. There are many parts of Europe and specifically eastern Europe that we haven't seen yet, so we wanted to make that the first stop on our journey.
😊
another phenomenal video ! great work
Thanks R! Always appreciate your feedback. 😀
I have relatives who went to Italy and it is the same there, very little tourists.
I would love to go to greece in winter or autumn, once the pandemic is over. Summer months are too hot even to spend on the beach.
In a month we will go over the boarder to Austria, lets hope it stays open
Hi Angelika, it certainly is peaceful at the tourist sites and great to see all the controls in place to keep everyone safe. Hope you can make it to Austria. It looks like we all need to stay flexible during these times since we never know when the situation will change. Take care and happy travels. 😀
Any plans to live anywhere in Asia?
Great question! We spent six years living in Singapore so we had amazing opportunities to explore much of the region. There are many parts of Europe and specifically eastern Europe that we haven't seen yet, so we wanted to make that the first stop on our journey. That said, we loved living in Asia and expect to one day make our way back, likely to Thailand and Vietnam, our two favourite countries to visit.
Could you link the Airbnb? I am planning to go to Greece 🥰

You'll see our review there as well. We loved the apartment and would definitely recommend it! 😊
