    As I just relplaced 2 jackets this year I know benefits/comprompises/price/fit all play a part. For me: Late fall is an Arcteryx Cerium sv, winter Fjallraven exp lite. Other things to consider: outer D rating, pockets, cut, wrist opening, and zippers. Thanks for the tips.

      And what about a Mountain Hardwear "Absolute Zero" or a Fjallraven "Expedition down parka no. 1" or even an Arcteryx "Cold WX parka SVX"? These all outperform the well-known Canada Goose Expedition - because that one is WAY too wide for most people here in Europe.

    Moncler is the best and perhaps the original. I love mine and I live pretty far north. Latitude 53.
    Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
    In 1954, Moncler quilted jackets were chosen to equip the Italian expedition to K2, which culminated with the conquest of the earth's second-highest summit by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.[13][14] Moncler also accompanied the French expedition which reached the summit of Makalu in 1955[15] and was the official supplier for expeditions in Alaska organised by Lionel Terray in 1964.[16] On occasion of the Grenoble Winter Olympics in 1968,[17][18] Moncler became the official supplier of the French national downhill skiing team.[17] In 1968, a cartoon duck named MonDuck was introduced as a mascot for the fashion house.[19

    • @325iaddict
      @325iaddict 7 місяців тому

      As a real Moncler fan (I must have 5 or 6, from the standard Maya to the extrrrremely nice "Rillieux parka" and even a down filled leather jacket) I must say: they are NOT the "best" down jackets. Until recently, NONE of these were waterproof. Last year, they finally, seriously, offered a down jacket with Gore Tex! I saw that one in the Danish Moncler store in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the model was absolutely unsuitable for my build, otherwise I would have bought it. Jackets that are more versatile (as they are waterproof) are for example the Nobis Cartel and the The North Face McMurdo parka. These both really do a good job...

    The mountain and the north face very nice down jackets.

  • @325iaddict
    @325iaddict 7 місяців тому

    You know what? I'm seriously disappointed by this list. ANY down jacket sporting the now so often seen "fixed hood no collar" construction can be immediately written OFF my list. If you zip it up completely (which I ALWAYS do) without the hood on your head, that hood start to pull back, pulling the zipper to your throat - a VERY nasty feeling!! And... to be truly versatile, any down jacket should be WATERPROOF, and by that I mean really waterproof, with some kind of membrane in it. THAT will shift the maintream jackets from the truly, universally usable ones. The Arcteryx Camosun, the Patagonia Wanaka, the The North Face McMurdo, ANY Nobis down jacket or down parka(!) will do as they are ALL waterproof, and even the Dutch brand Gaastra came up with some really nice down jackets having a removable hood, a collar and some kind of waterproof fabric, not so strange, as their origin lies in sailing jackets. So, there you have it: 5 brands that make REALLY universally usable ones - and even with great comfort, as they ALL have a nice collar, and adaptable too, as the hood is removable.

    Living in the uk, what North Face down number would suit the coldest uk winters? Personally I think uk winters are getting milder so would a 550 be ok and would a 800 be too much? How about a 700 or 750?

    • @Globetrotter-1
      @Globetrotter-1 2 роки тому +3

      It also depends on the amount of down insulation. For example a 600 fill with more down will ultimately be far warmer than an 800 fill with less down. Also goose down is finer than 🦆 duck down. Another huge criteria is durability, as many jackets now employ ultralight weight fabrics that unfortunately tend to be fragile and cannot withstand heavy use. Personally I am prepared to carry that slightly heavier jacket that has strong and durable fabrics and zips.

    • @Carbidestruck
      @Carbidestruck Рік тому

      Down fill power is part of the warmth of a jacket. The total warmth of a jacket is determined by fill power x fill weight. Fill power on its own doesn’t tell you much about a jacket.
      Imho, 750 to 850 is great quality down and will serve most purposes.

Since the winter weather here is changing from snow to rain, I'm curios which is the best protection to the water also, both been water repellent, any ideas?

      NONE of the jackets proposed here is waterproof. If you can accept a fixed hood (why?? It is VERY uncomfortable if you do NOT wear the hood...) then a Rab Valiance comes to my mind. But I would take a Nobis Cartel ANYTIME over the suggested Rab, as this jacket has a comfortable collar and a removable hood!

    • @Karim-wv4de
      @Karim-wv4de 2 роки тому +2

      @@monzarace why the hell not !? The number one is the The North Face AMK Cloud L6 parka, 1000 down fill. Make sure you also buy their mitts or insulated gloves as this jacket is made for pros who go to Himalayas, and does not have side pockets.
      The second one is the Arcteryx Alpha parka jacket, 850 down fill.
      Make sure you also get Icebreaker long johns and light Eddie Bauer insulated fleece pants for a comfortable feeling, otherwise there goes you body heat and energy drained through your legs after an hour in -35 celsius.
      Also, balaclava to warm your face and nose....as this is the first thing that will freeze at -35 celsius. And in case of blowing snow storm at -35, a nice and cool pair of ski googles.

    • @monzarace
      @monzarace 2 роки тому

      @@Karim-wv4de I do have all that, just some other brands. All my gear ready and looked after, but my trip was just cancelled (not to the Himalayas), because of the war. Argh...
      And for still standing activities, I still have and use the old type (not the present one made) Canada Goose Snow Mantra, which was better in the beginning, not today, when it all seems to have gone haywire. Also I think some of TNF went down qualitywise, not all of course.
      So to a question. I use a bit of clear sticky tape and a bit of glue to repair the thin outer surface, with the thin tape being on the inside, if I can press it in. What do you use on say the TNF summit jacket? (doesn't work in minus temps though, so have to get back down to repair).
      Kind regards.

    • @Karim-wv4de
      @Karim-wv4de 2 роки тому

      @@monzarace not sure i completely understand your question, but i will attempt to answer it.
      TNF jackets and sleeping bags are notorious for getting rips. Except this new AMK L6 cloud down, which is the new generation material.
      I wouldnt bother to repair their jackets, i would just buy a new one that doesnt rip. Once the jacket gets wet, your tape may fall off, and then the jacket is useless.
      Speaking of ski goggles, Montcler sells really cool ones.
      If you want to look really coo on a severe blowing snow storml, i'd go for ultra cool full face polarized ski goggles.
