Let's just take a moment to appreciate how Lauren has played so many comedic parts with a light-lyric soprano voice. Composers take note! Comedy roles don't always have to belt, let's mix it up cause I'm exhausted haha
Lauren Lopez said before she is a classically trained singer and struggles with the very broadway sounding songs. You can definitely tell she feels more comfortable singing more classical sounding songs like When You Gotta Go, but she has also improved a lot and is a very good singer.
It sucks there weren't enough songs to show off her ability in Black Friday. They almost all required her to use her lower register and a specific, darker tone, two things that don't flatter her voice a lot
@@stephenfiora506 I actually disagree, I think she sounded amazing in the lower register and you could tell she'd been practicing and working hard on it. She didn't sound as strong as if she'd been in a higher soprano register but nevertheless she did amazing and I hope she keeps working on this lower register.
@@stephenfiora506 I disagree. In the UA-cam recording she was sick, so she doesn't sound her best, but in the cast recording her lower register really shines. I'm the same way. I was classically trained by a pretty famous opera singer here in Austin and when I moved from performing operas to performing in broadway/travelling musicals/local musicals I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the style.. I think I've got it now though!

It’s basically the note that they can hit, so you have your do re mi, which would be the same as C D E, and basically the numbers apply to in which octave it’s in, so the first octave is 1 and so on
I actually study music, but the way octaves are written at least in America is so confusing to me. If I read that as I'm used to, anything in the 5th (or 4th, 3rd is also pretty high) octave would be impossible for a human voice to reach 😂

8:35 I can vouch for that as an Aussie also our tongues resting position makes it harder for high notes, that’s why my alto voice struggles to reach certain notes and my head voice is pretty trashy
Can you make a part 2 including Joey, Jeff, Meredith and Jon? People have debated so much about whether Jeff is actually a good vocalist (mainly bc of his overuse of falsetto in tgwdlm) and I wanna see someone else’s opinion. Especially since you pay such close attention to detail
I don't a lot about this kind of stuff but Jeff is an amazing vocalist! TGWDLM doesn't show how good he is. I also thought he was "meh" before listening to him in The Trail to Oregon. When the World's at Stake (Reprise) illustrates it perfectly in my opinion. The joke with Joey who can't hit the same note as him was like a shock to me because it made me realize how high and powerful it actually was ! It also feels as if it's his best range. It's less showy than The Grind for example though so it isn't as obvious... Jack Bauer definitely was one of his best roles if not THE best one. It was beautifully written (characterisation wise and range ? wise) and I hope he gets to play more roles like this. TGWDLM had him being too goofy and "intense". America is Great Again was his best song and I wish he would be more popular when he plays "serious" parts!
I'd like to see comparisons between some of the main casts's first performances to their more recent ones. People like Joe and Joey would be interesting to see
i know joe isnt the best singer but PLEASE! he's improved so much and sounds phenomenal in spies are forever, and he's so good at singing in character!!
Mariah's projection and extremely consistent tone should be mentioned as strengths. When I first heard her sing in TGWDLM, I knew right away that she would be the one to end up moving to an actual Broadway role... and of course, she very quickly did!
I don't know much about ranges and music (I was in a church choir and just... never managed to learn much more than how many beats a note was supposed to be held for and that the notes flipped upside down were high notes that my voice hated) so I just want to thank you for putting in all the effort to make this video.
Me, not knowing anything about music and singing, not understanding what any of those letters and numbers on the screen mean: Yes yes of course I agree
I feel like they all have their weaknesses, but regardless, they are amazing singers and deserve more credit for how well they sing❤ And I love how unbiased all your critiques are😁 Good job!👏👌
Just two things that I disagree with. The jaw moving with vibrato doesn't necessarily suggest that the vibrato is forced. I know several people who their jaws just happen to move when they're singing. Second, whenever you said people were nasal, I think you were mistaking that word for bright. It's more likely that the spot in their range that happens is just brighter than the other parts. Other than that really good analysis. If you haven't done a second one already, I really hope you make it and talk about Jeff's falsetto. He can hit the notes, but it sounds really untrained and he has a LOT of intonation issues when he's using it. (PAAAAUUUUUL) sustain anyone?
I really appreciate the honesty in this. I feel like a lot of fan videos are just "Strength: Everything - Weakness: Nothing". Which is obvious not always a bad thing, everyone else to support their favorite artist whole-heartedly. But it's also good tp see that even great singers have their weak points, and theres a lot to learn from that both from a viewers POV and an artists.
I loved this! It was extremely fun to watch and it's also fun to watch more stuff on actual singing techniques since I left my previous choir. I'd love to see more on these!
This was a really well made and researched vid!!! I was expecting something more on layman’s terms and was really pleasantly surprised. The only thing I’d say is that I think Robert’s high belt can sound forced at times, a la Twisted. You could tell he was straining. It may have been the choreo, it may have been his technique.
Was waiting for my boy Joey, but happy that all my other favorites were here instead. :D Nice analysis (At least I think that's what it was XD) of the vocals. I was super surprised by Robert and Lauren (I thought Lauren could go higher) But not really surprised by Jamie and Mariah.
I love how you played a clip of Robert Manion singing "Show Stopping Number" as you had his estimated full range up on the screen, because, like, 3.7 octaves is definitely a show stopping number in my book.
Jaime Lyn: strength-growls, weakness-growls Dylan: strength- “Welcoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooome all of you to Hogwarts” weakness- Mega-girl😍 Lauren: strength-being a little boy, weakness-steals the show (and our hearts) too much Robert: strength- face touching, weakness- wig Mariah: strength-everything, weakness- nothing
On Jaimes the last weakness (about her sounding like she’s shouting) I actually really like that about her, too me it makes it more powerful and more just like Jaime. Idk maybe I’m biased but I really do like that. It’s actually one of the reasons she’s my favorite starkid actor. I was surprised when you put on her weaknesses.
I was thrilled to see a clean and technical analysis of these vocalist. As I love them all, and listen to them on repeat, you notice some of the areas that are lacking in and this video was a very nice explanation of it. I also love the addition of range!!!!
What you say about Mariah’s chest mix and stuff reminds me of pre-hiatus Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. He’s an amazing singer, but he used to use his chest voice to sing high notes. When he did this, you couldn’t really understand what he was saying because of the strain on the notes. He doesn’t do that anymore, but you can hear it in the early work before the band went on hiatus (this was 9 years ago when they announced it, so he’s obviously gotten work on it.) Okay I’m done
8:38 i know this part with his voice during "he's the reason for our many wars" (8:44) is something you list as weakness but I actually kind of really love it
This is really great. Also its great that most of the weaknesses are stylistic choices. Id love a part 2 with people like joey, joe, both the brians, meredith? This was such a cool video.
This is honestly so good for so many reasons, as a singer myself watching extremely talented people and taking note that they have strengths and weaknesses in their voice is helpful.
This is really interesting to me. Especially after Black Friday because I feel like Lauren really showed a different part of her voice in songs like Adore Me. I would be really interested in another one of these videos. Good content!
writing this in 2021, after having watched the DVD of homecoming, clips from Starry (with Dylan and Mariah), and slime tutorials from the Mean Girls NT, the improvement each of them has made is incredible! Dylan rarely forces vibrato, Jaime has leaned into a more supported belt instead of manipulating her larynx, Mariah sounds better overall, and Lauren has improved her belt a lot. As a vocal student, I'm super impressed with all of their progress and it's a huge inspiration to me. Some other excellent starkid/tcb voices that i'd love to see you cover: Curt Mega, Kim Whalen, Joe Walker, Brian Holden, Meredith Stepien, AJ Holmes, Clark Baxtresser.
oh my goodness, i absolutely ADORE this. i was already excited but you’ve approached it from an AMAZING technical standpoint and i commend you for it!! wow wow wow i love it
I’ve recently watched a couple of voice analysis vids, but they’re only ever covering broadway stars. Thank you so much for this! I don’t understand any of the terminology used, but I love to see the reasons that I love these voices so much. Also, you were exceptionally unbiased, which is really hard, so congratulations! Hoping for a part two!
I had this video in mind when I watched black friday-I noticed that dylan has definitely ironed out that forced vibrato thing!! It’s amazing to see them all improve!
This video is so cool! I've started taking vocal lessons recently so it's really interesting to compare myself to professional actors and your analysis is really spot on!

I love how Robert has the least amount of weaknesses!
Tied with Mariah
Smart Monster they’re both powerhouses ugH
I was thrilled to see a clean and technical analysis of these vocalist. As I love them all, and listen to them on repeat, you notice some of the areas that are lacking in and this video was a very nice explanation of it. I also love the addition of range!!!!
don’t know why this analysis is something that the world greatly needs, but it does
What you say about Mariah’s chest mix and stuff reminds me of pre-hiatus Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. He’s an amazing singer, but he used to use his chest voice to sing high notes. When he did this, you couldn’t really understand what he was saying because of the strain on the notes. He doesn’t do that anymore, but you can hear it in the early work before the band went on hiatus (this was 9 years ago when they announced it, so he’s obviously gotten work on it.)
Okay I’m done
8:38 i know this part with his voice during "he's the reason for our many wars" (8:44) is something you list as weakness but I actually kind of really love it
As a voice major in college, this was such a pleasure to watch
Some other excellent starkid/tcb voices that i'd love to see you cover: Curt Mega, Kim Whalen, Joe Walker, Brian Holden, Meredith Stepien, AJ Holmes, Clark Baxtresser.
in conclusion: they're all fucking great at singing
Idk much about the technicals but all i know is that Jamie’s voice is fucking beautiful
_Thank you for coming to my Ted talk_ (no pun intended)
Ok but I love Lauren Lopez and her high notes give me l i f e
This has to be my favorite video of yours yet. As a music teacher myself & the daughter of a vocal coach - I really appreciate this!
this might be my favorite Starkid fan video, truly fascinating
Love to see you do more of these with the other members. Especially Jeff Blim and Joe Walker.
A perfect video to show that they're all very talented but even with the insane talents they have they still have weaknesses :)
this makes so much sense! thank you for taking the long task of creating this video! I can't believe I understood everything!
oh my goodness, i absolutely ADORE this. i was already excited but you’ve approached it from an AMAZING technical standpoint and i commend you for it!! wow wow wow i love it
I’ve recently watched a couple of voice analysis vids, but they’re only ever covering broadway stars. Thank you so much for this! I don’t understand any of the terminology used, but I love to see the reasons that I love these voices so much. Also, you were exceptionally unbiased, which is really hard, so congratulations! Hoping for a part two!
yes clips from Starry!! i love you for this (the road is sooo good!)
I had this video in mind when I watched black friday-I noticed that dylan has definitely ironed out that forced vibrato thing!! It’s amazing to see them all improve!
This video is amazing work. Seriously, well done lady/dude/person.
This video is so cool! I've started taking vocal lessons recently so it's really interesting to compare myself to professional actors and your analysis is really spot on!
Me, knowing nothing about the technical parts of singing: hehe, good voices.
Such an interesting video! 💗💗💗 The sudden end blinded me tho 😂
don’t forget lauren’s Bb6 at the end of inevitable
i really appreciate that you acknowledged actual vocal technique and not just stylistic choices based on the shows they were in (also not using only show clips)!
Wow this is amazing - both the singers and the time and effort you put into this video!
