    Oh dear....? I suddenly know what it feels like to be a thief?
    That was a class that we all could’ve had to pay for. Holy crap.
    Copious thank you’s Roxanne. Extremely generous of you.
    I know of several gals who claim to be knitting “gurus” who charge for EVERYthing calling it a “course”.... (what the Helen...)
    You just have a heart to share what you know and we reap the amazing benefits. Bless your heart!

    I realize I am almost 3 yrs. from when you made this video, but I wanted to tell you how great it is. You explained so well the differences in the reference books. I do own several of them but only use a few of them on occasion. I too use the knitter's finishing techniques book the most. I also will open them all when looking for certain techniques. You are terrific at explaining things. I hope you will continue to make videos.

    Thanks for this great episode on reference books. I have some of the same books but hadn't read through them completely nor analyzed their content enough to know their individual attributes.

    I fell for the historical Aran "clan sweater" market seven years ago. I spent 90 dollars for a very poorly written pattern ( that would have been hard for an advanced knitter to figure out), and enough yarn to make the project. It did have some basic clan information that I confirmed was true from other sources. The nice thing I do have to say about the kit was if I wanted to order an extra large man's sweater's worth of 100% wool yarn from Ireland plus a pattern it would have probably cost me more than the kit. The kit knitted into a gorgeous sweater with really good yarn. It was my first knitting project and I was way in over my head and didn't even know it. I think in this case ignorance was bliss. Also, this was before I knew of UA-cam and Ravelry for how to information. I will have to look into the book you mentioned about the historical facts of Irish Aran knitting. Thank you for your time and the videos. I am a new subscriber and what I have seen so far is lovely💖

      It's funny how we just accept what we're told about knitting, because why would someone make that up? And the answer is...because it sells sweaters (and patterns and yarn)! :-) Sometimes, it isn't that people are making things up, but that they are misconstruing or misunderstanding what *is* true, and extrapolating beyond reason. Starmore's history is interesting, when she sticks to the facts, but amusingly enough, she also makes some conclusions that I'm not entirely convinced are supported by the facts. We all have opinions, eh?

      Valerie Dunham a coincidence. Someone posted about this pattern today on the Facebook group for Aran and cable knitting. Also said it was poorly written. I hadn’t heard of it before.

    Hi Roxanne, I received my copy of "The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques. " I am slowly building my library. This book will be a great reference on things that I'm still learning. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Respectfully, Donna

    I'm so glad I found your channel! I've been on Ravelry since 2007 so I knew of you from there but this is even better. Really interesting information. I had to laugh about you sending socks to your mother because you couldn't fit any more in your drawer--I'm in the same boat. Mom has been gone since 2007 so not an option for me. I think I'll clean out another drawer and keep going :-).

    I know this is very late but I've been binging your channel. Book devoted to intarsia--Kaffe Fassett's Pattern Library. Nearly all intarsia. My favorite knitting bag book is Mary Thomas's Knitting Book. I also love MT's Pattern Book because I love lace knitting & this book explains stitch structure--I know these are nearly at the artefact stage according to the family archealogist.

    Thank you for this video, Roxanne:) I am currently doing Level 3 of MHK and have most of the books you have. You have just inspired me to go through Buss's book again. And I totally agree about The Principles of Knitting. A great comprehensive book but creating new names for techniques is confusing!

    I always enjoy Fridays with you. I have to add, which I not related to knitting, but my hair and your hair are the same color and your sweater is a perfect color for the both of us and I never even consider clothing in that color and I am going out to buy some yarn that matches your sweater!

    • @RoxanneRichardson

      I've always loved that color, and I think it's always looked fine on me, but since I've let my hair go gray, I've been *really* happy with that sweater! Go for it! :-)

    Thank you so much for making this video! I my not have access to the Internet in the future. I was wondering what book you would recommend for a reference? I guess what I’m saying is if you could only have one knitting book what would you pick? Thank you so much for your advice☺️

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  2 роки тому +1

      That depends on what sort of reference you want: a stitch dictionary; a book with technique information; or a book with a variety of garments and accessories in a wide range of sizes. If you don't have internet access, you might have access to a public library, which often have many knitting books available to patrons.

    I am new at exploring different types of knitting.. I know about colour work but thats it until I started watching you I thought thats all there was, now I know it breaks done into many sub categories, do you have any videos that break it down into subcategories or anything like that or any ideas on where I could look that start at the basics to explain the break down ect?

    If I do the knit stitches continental but the purl English will the stitches be accurate?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому

      Whether the stitches come off the needle untwisted has nothing to do with which hand you hold the yarn in. (Continental refers to managing the yarn in your left hand, and English in your right hand.) You might be thinking of how stitches are mounted on the needle? (Western mount vs Eastern mount). Even then, the stitch mount does not determine whether or not the stitches come off the needle correctly. It's making sure you work the stitch correctly, based on how it sits on the needle. I have an old Ask a Knitter column than might help you understand better. You can find it on Ravelry here: www.ravelry.com/twir/62/ask-a-knitter-6

    I ordered a second hand copy of the Knitters Handbook. It arrived today. It has a stamp inside it that indicates that it belongs to a library in England. When libraries in the UK sell on there books they add another stamp to indicate that the book has been withdrawn from their collection and this then indicates it can be sold on second hand. The book I have just received via Amazon has NO such stamp. Therefore I can only conclude someone borrowed it and never returned it to that library. Someone has just sold it to me. My gut instinct is to send it right back. Disappointment for me. Will have to try again to order it.

      Oh, that's so funny! I took a look on Amazon and it says it has a pub date of 6 Feb (3 days ago), so you must have got one a bit early! I wonder if the section on decreases has improved? ;-)

    • @brendadagel
      @brendadagel 6 років тому +2

      I had to grab it and look! They do have decreases demonstrated on the purl side but only 2 that I saw. They also put the common abbreviations like SKP or SSK and the chart sign by the pictures.
      This is my first knitting reference book, though now I have a couple more to add to my list!

    • @jubbins64
      @jubbins64 6 років тому

      I just bought one on Amazon over the weekend. It arrived today. I was looking at it and wasn't sure if I wanted it, but it seemed decent especially if they improved the section on decreases. I also have a book that has a section on charted colors. It's called 750 Knitting Stitches The Ultimate Knit Stitch Bible. I have a few other reference books that you also mentioned and it was nice to get a review of them by an experienced knitter

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому +1

      I ordered a copy on Saturday, expecting it to arrive on Monday, but it showed up on Sunday! The section on decreases is vastly improved. They've really updated the book to include so many techniques that have become more widely known due to knitters from all over the world learning from each other. The internet made that happen, particularly Ravelry (and UA-cam).

    • @jubbins64

      Roxanne Richardson - I totally agree! But don’t forget Craftsy! Their classes are great! I started knitting mittens from a book that had drawings of stitches. How far knitting has come with the internet! We have become a worldwide closely KNIT community! 🤓

    I have one of the original copies of Principles of Knitting purchased in 1988. Do you think I could sell it for $350? LOL. I have lots of reference books actually. Before the rise of UA-cam it was the only way to look up stuff. I like just reading them for background info.

      My mother in law scooped up a copy at a library book sale and gave it to me. It was 2005 and copy cost her 50 cents. I kept the book because it is so helpful but also watched the prices rising online. Of course, the new version has been released so prices of used copies dropped.

    Thank you for sharing this video!! It is a very comprehensive review of reference books and was very helpful to me as I’m starting out my masters level 1 and was looking out for something like this 😃In the video you briefly touched upon the subject of books on pattern writing. Could you suggest some books on this subject? I would really like to explore writing my own patterns for my design ideas. Thank you once again!!!

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому

      The MHK program gives some great information on how to format a pattern, but there are a couple of good books, as well. Kate Atherley's book Pattern WRiting for Knit Designers is a good one.
