Aries Targett Mads was very, very good in his role as Hannibal, but I understand exactly what you mean because I feel the same way. Mads did the best thing he could have done, he took the character of Hannibal Lecter and made the role his own by playing it in a completely different way, and his Lecter was amazing. Had Anthony Hopkins never played the role of Dr. Lecter first, Mads portrayal would be the one we all think of when we think of one of the books or films. It must have been quite a challenge to take on a role that had already been totally captured and "owned" by another actor. I must give Mads credit for even taking on the role, the same as Julianne Moore taking on the role of Clarice Starling. "Silence of the Lambs" is such an epic film that the thought of anyone else playing ANY of the characters in a sequel or prequel made me uneasy and a bit resentful about seeing them for the first time. I truly believe the only reason I love "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon" is because Anthony Hopkins again portrayed Dr. Lecter, if he hadn't neither film could not and should not have been made, they just wouldn't work. I'll also give a nod to Brian Cox, the very first to play the character of Hannibal Lecter, albeit in very few scenes which actually left me wanting to see much more of his portrayal while watching "Manhunter". Cox too made the character of Lecter his own, but I'll say it once more, there is only one actor that actually became Hannibal Lecter and is hard to imagine playing any other role, and that is and will always be Anthony Hopkins.
"Lecter and me" sounds like the title of a great sitcom, it would be about Hannibal constantly looking for a new roommate because he always ends up killing and eating all of them.

The only argument people have for him being the best Hannibal Lecter, is the fact that he won an Oscar. That's it.
I hadn't known he'd won an Oscar for it. I don't generally care about the Oscars, I've seen too many bad decisions there. He's not the most accurate to the first book, but future books were written with Hopkins in mind. (Because the character's popularity took off, Harris was pressured to put out a novel shedding more light on Lecter's character- hence, Hannibal & Hannibal Rising. He didn't care for that, Hannibal was born not made, but did it anyway.) I enjoyed Hopkins' performance mainly because he's just that charismatic. I liked him as Zorro as well, what can I say?
The BEST ever actor, no one can beat him. He caught me with the scene behind the glass when I was 12 or 13 and hasn’t let me go since then…I watch all three series every Christmas. Thank you, Sir Anthony Hopkins ❤
He is a total genius. The fact that I can see the silence of the lambs and be completely horrified with him them watch him in you will meet a tall dark stranger and love him just proves how brillant of an actor he is.
I would not even approach him if I saw him out. I would maybe nod, or smile. He's done so much excellent work; ( I mean yes, the Lecter films are amazing! of course!) But he's stunning to me in everything he has done! I first fell in love with him in The Lion in Winter, even though I didn't even really realize that it WAS Sir Anthony as Richard (he's so very young! ) And lastly seeing him in WestWorld, where he steals every scene he is in. Thank you , to you , Sir, for sharing your talent with us, so generously.
I watched the movie last night with my friends and they had nightmares, while I was smiling like a child with a new toy saying "Damn is he ever seductive and such a great actor" if I ever got a chance to meet Anthony Hopkins, I would shake his hand and say "you are my Idol"
Women want to be protected above all else. That's where their idea of "sexy" comes from: female DNA. (This took about a million years to develop.) They are attracted to any "protective" male quality, from TALLNESS (YES!! YES!!) to toughness, to arrogance, even to evil. Women think (deny this if you dare), "Well, if he's mean-as-hell to the Rest of the World, and nice to **me**, then I've got it made!"
I met AH is 1993 while he was filming Shadowlands at Great Central Railway station in Loughborough. He signed his book for me and gave me a peck on the cheek. Very quiet and unassuming. There was no big ego or bluster. Just an ordinary guy with a very soft welsh accent. I remember writing to him in 1989 asking him for a signed photo. He sent me several, posted from Kensington beautifully signed. He was acting in M Butterfly at the time in London....and I believe that's when he received the Silence Lambs script. Always loved this guy's acting. Shame that he decamped to the USA but I can understand why
i never saw Lecter as a villain... in fact i see him as sort of an Anti-Hero... he only kills the people that have it coming, so to speak....if you have read the books you will learn quite a bit about the mind of the Character Lecter... and when the books ended... Lecter.. the bad guy...gets a happy ending, not the usual incarceration or death most stories would have ended with... the movies did not follow the books in that respect...
I would not say this. Lecter is a psychopath, even being somewhat fanciful. An idealized figure. They are like gods. They just do what please them. Concepts like right and wrong don't apply to them. Villain, hero, anti-hero... it's out of question because they don't recognize it. They know what it means, but they don't recognize as part of their world.
yes but it is well established in the books(if not the movies) that Lecter is not a psychopath... the final book in fact reveals a great deal about Lecter's motivations.
Samuel Atwood When you say final book, do you mean the final book chronologically or the last published one? Both reveal some aspects about Hannibal's motivations, I guess. However, it seems that psychopathology can be also caused by some kind of trauma, like Hannibal's sister's death, and added to this, Hannibal's discovery that he was feeded with her flesh. The psychopathology seems to be not only a condition you're born with.
i was referring to the book in which his child hood was discussed and yes his sister... in the final pages of that book the author more or less tells us Lecter is satisfied and finished with killing... he is more of a force of balance than a psychopath... his "adventures" were his path to "fixing" himself.... his victims were poisonous people that would have happily fed one child to another just to entertain themselves... he was on a mission to destroy that kind of thinking....
Samuel Atwood I just saw the movies and I always got so much things to read that I couldn't read Hannibal yet. Well, I don't know if I understood, but let me see. Are you telling me that Hannibal eating human flesh (the rude ones) was just a form that he found to fix himself or maybe just mitigate the pains of the past? This sounds a little interresting. Well, I think I need to read this book sooner than I thought to understand better Hannibal's mind. Anyway, I'm afraid that this can become a disappointment. I don't like this idea of anti-hero about Hannibal. I don't like to see him this way. I see Hannibal as something beyond all of this. Maybe like you said, a force, but not of balance but a force completely or practically free of limits with no obligation with moral senses or any kind of conceptions. Like a ghost, a spectrum, a shadow of a god among mankind. The pure expression of nature, like a stormy, a powerful lightning, a tornado, a burning fire which doesn't need to feel sorry for devouring everything because this is its nature, this is what it is. When is said things like "origins of the evil" I don't see it like "Hannibal BEING evil". I see it like Hannibal being the pure personification of what we call/understand as "evil", what necessarily don't mean that this conception applies to him as we understand it. This is why I think this character is so poetic, so beautiful, so great.
I have loved Anthony Hopkins since I saw him in the Lion inWinter as a kid. No matter what role he plays, he gives a memorable performance and makes the character an impression.
My favorite Anthony Hopkins movies are "The Edge" and "A Bridge too Far". He excells in both! But the Character of Charles Morse in "The Edge" is so real, and down to Earth, he's completely relatable to me.
He's a genius! From this interview alone you can tell he's an intellect. Hell, everything he does he has that... I mean that's why Hannibal was so scary, because not only was he insane (well, mentally unstable if you will) but he was a genius.
What an amazing actor! He can do anything from horror (Magic, The Silence of the Lambs) to war movies (A Bridge too Far) to drama (Meet Joe Black) to action (The Mask of Zorro). He's had such a long and varied career, and he's also done some good TV work (The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case). Great actor.
Ah Sir Anthony..humble yet such a highly educated man. I love that Hannibal Lecter bore so many talents..literary scholar, acclaimed psychiatrist, deeply immersed in music and the arts. Since learning that Sir Anthony is also a very talented composer and great literary scholar himself it makes the role so much more authentic. One of the most frightening villains of all time and yet he had such a politeness about him that you could almost forget how savage he actually was. Still sends shivers down my spine all these years later! And yes he'd be on my list of top 10 dinner guests..who wouldn't want this man at their table!?
there is no human being on this planet, or elsewhere, that could have played this role. Anthony Hopkins does not make bad movies or characters. He is magnificent
Interesting that Hopkins was cast as Hannibal Lecter based on his role as Dr Treves (a far nicer and more humble doctor) in The Elephant Man. Such a great actor!
he really is the best actor ever! whenever I watch film where he is playing, I can´t look away from his eyes! I don´t know why but I keep staring at them! I have never had such a respect for anyone´s work until I saw his films! anyone agree!!!??!! part 2:42 is really shocking, my heart almost skipped a beat!
I just love him! He's awesome!! He's one of my favorite actors, because he has this ability to just "make it work" with any role he's given. I totally agree that he did an amazing job with these movies, but silence of the lambs takes the cake. Best. Hannibal. Ever.
I love this man, I love that he's so humble and down-to-earth. He's such a sweetie, and at the very top of my list of favorite actors; and I mean ACTORS, not petty movie stars who mostly got rich and famous because of their looks or pseudo-acting "skills". Sir Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, I've always loved and admired his work, ever since I was a little girl, he's genius in everything he's done. Remember "Magic"? hehe He's also one of the most attractive older men I've ever seen :-)
It's because he is so dangerous! That is the very root of sex, in my opinion! Whether he is Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, or Prof. Abraham Van Helsing, he will always out-smart you! Intelligence is deeply intertwined with danger when it comes to raw sexual desire!
Anyone who has read the Lecter series would agree that nobody could have been cast better for this role. Granted, Lecter was younger than Hopkins when SotL came out, but Sir Anthony Hopkins played the part to absolute perfection.
People love Lecter because he understands people fully. Who doesn't want to be fully understood? They fear him for the same reason: he looks right through them, knows all of their weaknesses and can and will exploit those.
I am a fannibal and not just because of the show. I have always been captivated by the story of Hannibal Lector. He is the boogeyman that can be very real. Hopkins take is the face anyone will think about when you hear Lector, it's just how it is. What I feel like is he's a version you do not want to show fear, even if he calls you out on it. Mads, I loved his take on Lector. It was great to see three whole seasons devoted to the character. While I would fear to be impolite to Hopkins Lector, I feel Mads Lector would kill you in a much more horrific way if you gave him an ounce of disrespect. Hannibal the Cannibal, forever in our hearts...Or eating them.

But I agree with You . Mads is Danish , but can speak 3 different languages so far His Lector is bland so far because He is playing cat and mouse , soon We shall see if He is up to blending His acting to Hopkins , this will be good to watch.
He's such a cool actor. Forgets his lines once he's done with the project. Doesn't believe in the concept of chemistry, just goes in and does the job. Very unique
For me, the top five movie actors who played great villains were, in no particular order: Anthony Hopkins, Gene Simmons (Runaway), Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, and Christopher Lloyd (mainly because of his voice!).
One of the greatest performances of all time. when you watch the movies you see Lecter, there's no Hopkins in there. Great actors are those who make you believe in the character without an ounce of their real selves in it. in recent times only Ledger's Joker comes to mind where we forgot about the actor and saw him only as the character.
I love how he says he's a movie actor, not a movie star. So humble

He's not the most accurate to the first book, but future books were written with Hopkins in mind. (Because the character's popularity took off, Harris was pressured to put out a novel shedding more light on Lecter's character- hence, Hannibal & Hannibal Rising. He didn't care for that, Hannibal was born not made, but did it anyway.)
I enjoyed Hopkins' performance mainly because he's just that charismatic. I liked him as Zorro as well, what can I say?
Honestly, I think he played Hannibal the best. He wasn’t the original but god he was great. I struggle to see someone else playing Lecter.
Es el mejor actor del mundo. Logra hacerte sentir tantas emociones en las películas en donde el participa... Es impresionante!
The BEST ever actor, no one can beat him. He caught me with the scene behind the glass when I was 12 or 13 and hasn’t let me go since then…I watch all three series every Christmas. Thank you, Sir Anthony Hopkins ❤
I love how gracious and genuinely humble he sounds. And he is very refined without coming across as yet another Shakespearean actor.
antony hopkıns the best
Nice.
You, Sir Anthony Hopkins, are a legend.
I have loved Anthony Hopkins since I saw him in the Lion inWinter as a kid. No matter what role he plays, he gives a memorable performance and makes the character an impression.
A legend.
My favorite Anthony Hopkins movies are "The Edge" and "A Bridge too Far". He excells in both! But the Character of Charles Morse in "The Edge" is so real, and down to Earth, he's completely relatable to me.
Anthony is a genuine treasure. Truly an amazing actor.
He's a genius! From this interview alone you can tell he's an intellect. Hell, everything he does he has that... I mean that's why Hannibal was so scary, because not only was he insane (well, mentally unstable if you will) but he was a genius.
This man scares me to death and satisfies me at the same time
Definitely one of the finest actors ever
He's one of the greatest actors of all time, hands down! I hope one day I will shake his hand, that would be a great honor!
Absolute genius.
It's takes a genius to play the best of fools or the best of psycos
Interesting that Hopkins was cast as Hannibal Lecter based on his role as Dr Treves (a far nicer and more humble doctor) in The Elephant Man. Such a great actor!
sj11791 Dr Treves came from my home town! They named a street, after him and a ward in the hospital.
he really is the best actor ever! whenever I watch film where he is playing, I can´t look away from his eyes! I don´t know why but I keep staring at them! I have never had such a respect for anyone´s work until I saw his films! anyone agree!!!??!! part 2:42 is really shocking, my heart almost skipped a beat!
Anthony is such a talented actor one of my favorites. I absolutely love him such a handsome man. And I absolutely love Hannibal Lecter
He is Hannibal.Truly a great actor!
"I try learn a poem a week"
What a beautiful man
Also he speaks like his role in The Elephant Man wasn't itself legendary.
I just love him! He's awesome!! He's one of my favorite actors, because he has this ability to just "make it work" with any role he's given. I totally agree that he did an amazing job with these movies, but silence of the lambs takes the cake. Best. Hannibal. Ever.
Yes famous for hannibal but done so much more! One of the best actors ever!
Remember "Magic"? hehe
He's also one of the most attractive older men I've ever seen :-)
My fave actor. Does Wales proud.
Boooo, fuck your patriotism.
This man is such a symbol of wisdom and talent. The voice, the way he talks.. There's just wisdom in it all.
l would never get tired of hearing Hopkins read something or act a part he nails his role perfectly.
Hannibal Lecter is my favorite character, ever
idk what it is about him, but I find myself weirdly attracted to him??
It's because he is so dangerous! That is the very root of sex, in my opinion! Whether he is Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, or Prof. Abraham Van Helsing, he will always out-smart you! Intelligence is deeply intertwined with danger when it comes to raw sexual desire!
same
Agreed. Every time I look at him I imagine he’s wearing a thong made of licorice.
Me too!
Yeah it’s good many people have been
He is an incredibly talented and brilliant actor !! 🌟i am a huge fan!
Anthony Hopkins is hands down 1 of the greatest actors of the 20th century.
God! I am so in love with him, he could eat me up!
Cannabelle haha...
Lmao I thought you wrote “God: I am so in love with, he could eat me up!”
quid pro quo
anthony hopkins is probably the most greatest actor who has ever lived
Anyone who has read the Lecter series would agree that nobody could have been cast better for this role. Granted, Lecter was younger than Hopkins when SotL came out, but Sir Anthony Hopkins played the part to absolute perfection.
His voice!!!
Anthony Hopkins even has a mind palace!!!
A true veteran. He has my utmost respect. His portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is nothing short of amazing.
If you really were such a fan, perhaps you could've at least learned to spell Lecter's name correctly?
@@abigail_yang Oh no. I misspelled his name. Clearly I lost all credibility of being a fan of the character. Fuck off.
think Hopkins is the more awesome and magnificent cinema serial killer; Mads is a great actor too, but Anthony... He's master!
He a British Actor an Brits are the ones that perfected English language . Listen to the late Richard Burton , both sound alike , I don't know if because of being a Shakespeare Actor .
Very unique
This perfectly explains why we have so few greats actors anymore.
The movie I liked him best in was The World's Fastest Indian.
whenever feasible one should always eat the rude.
Brilliant- the way Hopkins describes his work as an actor is impressive.
I admire him. just wonderful. Thank you.
he's an amazing actor, one of the best of all time
For me, the top five movie actors who played great villains were, in no particular order: Anthony Hopkins, Gene Simmons (Runaway), Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, and Christopher Lloyd (mainly because of his voice!).
wow! Runaway was great.
I agree :)
Don't forget Robert Englund ;)
Yes, very true! :)
Oh, definitely!
He's brilliant wish I could get his auto :(
One of the greatest performances of all time. when you watch the movies you see Lecter, there's no Hopkins in there. Great actors are those who make you believe in the character without an ounce of their real selves in it.
in recent times only Ledger's Joker comes to mind where we forgot about the actor and saw him only as the character.
one of top 3 best role interpretation ever in entyre movie history.....absolutely stunning artwork.
Gosh, he sounds so humble. Well, Mads needs to do a lot of work before he can be on the same par with this man. Still, both are pretty awesome.
I am so glad Mads came through in his own way
Anthony Hopkins and Me!
In my opinion...there's NO ONE ELSE that can do the job Hopkins did in this role. The finest of acting and 100% talent. Your awesome Anthony Hopkins!
Gaaaasp! He's so adorable! How did I not know that until right now? Lol.
