I was listening to matchbox 20 and a perfect circle and was thinking about all the other music I grew up with... And - here I am 😊 I miss music like this. Really don't hear stuff like this much anymore sadly. Thankfully the Internet is forever and I can listen to this great stuff whenever I want though 😅🎉
@Start Here Not necessarily so, as I can easily deny that as being fact, as can any number of other people. I can also disprove it, to varying degrees. Therefore, I shall dispute such a statement.
So after a lot of relistening, I have made an INTERPRETATION of the song. This is what I believe the meaning is, so to start off, I personally think it delves into themes of internal conflict and the search for solace in a world filled with superficiality. The opening lines, "I, I could use / A shot; your novacaine / My soul's a fuse / Blows away your name," suggest a desire for numbing or escaping from emotional pain. The mention of "novacaine" alludes to a temporary relief or anesthesia from the agony caused by a particular person or situation. The protagonist's soul feels volatile, as if ready to explode, erasing the memory of the source of their suffering. The chorus presents a dynamic between different personas: "Then you can be the remedy / And I can be the enemy / And he can go and live as nothing/Then you can be the wannabe / And I can be the remedy." Here, there's a sense of shifting roles and perspectives. The protagonist sees themselves as both the source of healing ("remedy") and the antagonist ("enemy"), saying that the person can heal him. Meanwhile, two other characters are shown, one being a person who can be his healer, but it seems he believes they're faking it/pretending or wanting to be it("The Wannabe"). Another character is depicted as insignificant ("live as nothing"), perhaps representing an outside force or a person that is getting in the way. The lines "Say this world is not so shallow / When you can't beg, steal, or borrow / Save your breath, your soul is hollow / And it's all too much to swallow" express disillusionment with the superficiality of the world. The inability to find genuine connection or fulfillment leads to a feeling of emptiness ("your soul is hollow") that is overwhelming ("it's all too much to swallow"). The repeated refrain of "The remedy" serves as a mantra, a reminder of the protagonist's search for resolution and relief from their inner turmoil. Overall, I believe the song reflects on the complexities of human relationships, the struggle for authenticity in a shallow world, and the longing for healing amidst inner conflict.
maybe its because i grew up listening to dad's rock music, but i have a soft spot for angsty early 2000's music like this. as like many other people, i was introduced to abandoned pools through clone high, and i love their music. its nostalgic and has a great feel to it. it also has elements of the songs that is unique to just them, like the weird noises that appear throughout. im gonna appreciate this music for a long time.
2024 here, This is one of the most well rounded albums I have listened to, every song has grown on me since I was first introduced to Abandoned Pools in February and I listened to the rest of the discography.
We have never lived in an era before where I would’ve had a chance in hell of finding this song again based on the tiny bit I remembered. So that’s one reason to be glad to be around now in these crazy times.
god this is my favorite song by Abandoned Pools. found this song one day years ago while scrolling through my recommended, yet it still hits harder than a blunt object to the head
Why is this not on spotify ? I remember waiting for this to come out and then having a nightmare trying to find this in my small home town record store. I had to special order it, Loved this record and band.
Seriously though they are recognized. But I'm the type of guy I really don't care who else is listening or even who else knows. But I'm sure they are still touring and making their money here and there. If you know you know. 😎
1:01 and on, the timbre/composition is so satisfying at this part, the deep low end and the melodic lyrics go together so well, I don't often get satisfied hearing sounds combine like that. The way it starts up is such an ear worm for me, what a great transition

This band is awesome. I absolutely love them. This album is a gem. Every song is a hit. So sad that they never took off, they are forever obscure. All their albums are good, but this one is unique. It has it's own sound that is not really present in the other albums. Their other stuff is good, but not like this. Still worth checking out if you want. They only have 4 albums in total so... Only 45 songs in total. Give em' a listen, doubt you'll regret it.
Hearing this when it first came out was like those weird dreams you have that make you feel lonesome when you wake up. Like something vaguely familiar and sadly beautiful. Like a dead childhood crush you still remember every now and then.
When it comes to finding under the radar music, there’s usually a neat little story to finding it. I found Billy Cobb before he had 1k subs because I binged too much Weezer on UA-cam. I found Steriogram from the music for a elite dangerous video. I found The Rosewood Thieves from a terrible horror movie. But I don’t remember how I came across Abandoned Pools and it bugs me

I heard that this song was banned from ever airing on the radio after release. You were singing about actual hypocrisy unlike the paid stooges (Smashing Pumpkins, RATM, SOAD... etc...) I've always wondered, do you still believe in your lyrics or has something changed?
This guy wasn't the first nor the last to write about the music industry, what makes you think this song was banned for anything? It's not even saying anything in particular other than "music industry bad" Not exactly riveting revelations here. What's your beef with those other bands though? This guy got paid just like those guys, stop trying to sound hipster and edgy.
I cannot help but feelin so nostalgic listening this in 2024.

I know bands much more underrated than this.

[Verse 1]
I, I could use
A shot your novacaine
My soul's a fuse
Blows away your name
[Chorus]
Then you can be the remedy
And I can be the enemy
And he can go and live as nothing
Then you can be the wanna be
And I can be the remedy
And he can go to hell for all I care
[Post-Chorus]
Say this world is not so shallow
When you can't beg, steal, or borrow
Save your breath your soul is hollow
When it's all too much to swallow
[Verse 2]
Take this souvenir
They can't deny you were here
This scar always there
To medicate your fear
[Chorus]
Then you can be the remedy
And I can be the enemy
And he can go and live as nothing
Then you can be the wanna be
And I can be the remedy
And he can go to hell for all I care
[Post-Chorus]
Say this world is not so shallow
When you can't beg, steal, or borrow
Save your breath your soul is hollow
When it's all too much to swallow

Then you can be the remedy
And I can be the enemy
