I was rooting for Forever Young to win, he was undefeated in all 5 of his races prior to this one so I thought he'd be a good pick
Props to Mystic Dan hanging out on the inside and keeping it low key until the final turn when everyone else went wide and all he had to do was run straight, and fast! I audibly exasperated at the finish. What a fun race to watch!
Even though I was no where near born I still think of the incredible Secretariat every time these major three races start!

I love horses and one of my favorite movies is Secretariat. I read that 20 of the original 22 horses entered in the race are from Secretariat’s bloodline. That’s very impressive! 🐎
I was born then and i remeber it well. There are videos ono YT of his triple cron races, His third leg ot he crown was out of this world. there are good stories about his jockey and groom Eddie Sweat.
Although we did not see the biggest achievement since the Horse Racing Law was enacted in Japan in 1923, I for one am glad to see the Japanese-produced Forever Young doing so well in the best dirt race in the world!
He should be banned for life. A donkey shouldn't be on same dirt as Sierra Leone. Jockey banned, he rode forever young straight outside the last quarter purposely nonstop bump and grind so much so he lost his whip. P.o.s.

I have never sat down and watched a horse racing event until this year. The entire event was a spectacle, and this finish was legendary. I will be watching more in the future

My dad called me the day that horse raced and he said hey there's a horse with 50 to 1 odds. We never bet on racing but I was telling him jokingly to go place a few thousand on it. I missed that race due to meetings but I get out to see a whole bunch of missed calls from my dad. I call him and he's screaming I should've listened to you that horse won. I didn't believe him at first. That's why I love sports. The upsets can be insane.
@@bender49ers I went to one horse race many years ago, the Arlington million. I was walking through the crowd and overheard some guy saying, "nobody sees it coming yet, it's odds are 64/1" I forgot the horses name. Not knowing anything about anything about horse racing I made out a 124/1 trifecta slip for $1 LMAO and hit. I wanna say it was the race where the horse broke it's leg (don't quote me on that it's foggy in the brain) in the final stretch and I hit 1st 2nd 3rd.
Go back even further. Look up the Kentucky Derby and a horse named Street Sense. He came from 19th all the way back to win and if you look at that overhead that is one of the greatest stretch runs that the Derby ever saw.
Now, that was a race. Exceptional call, as well

I hit the oaks- Derby double for 20$, got back over 2k...I knew Arkansas Derby was best prep race. I boxed mystik with just steel(both ark horses), and steel got the worst ride in Derby history..

Sierra Leone should have been disqualified. Came over numerous times to run into Forever Young, who would have won had it not been for that. Think there should have been an inquiry.

No, Forever Young’s jockey whipped him on the left which sent Forever Young over. His jockey then hit FY on the right to straighten him back up. Go watch
When FY's jockey did not object, you had to figure both horses were equally at fault.

Why is no one talking about forever young being rob of the kentucky derby by sierra leone. At 1:45 sierra leone starts bumping forever young all the way through the stretch. Forever young gets his back legs knocked sideways, thats a whole momentum lost. Stewards need to set high standards of fairness or the sport will be tainted.

@chrisp.9172 Definitely. Sometimes, the most tactically smart jockey gets the gold. It's not always about being on the best horse. He saved the ground lovely and made sure he had enough in hand to bring it home

My dad's name is Dan.
My mom and I were joking yesterday morning how that has to be the horse that wins the Derby. It's fate.
So in the afternoon, I go to my favorite bar to watch the race. This bar had a drawing where you put your name in a bag, and there's one bag for each horse. I wasn't even going to bother, but one of the bar regulars hands me a slip and just tells me to put my name down and he'll throw it in. So I do that. I told another guy that's been to several Derbies that I picked Mystik Dan and he's like, "yeah kid, your horse doesn't have a shot in hell". He's 90 years old, so I didn't take offense to the "kid" remark.
I did, however, pick the two horses that won the previous two races leading up to the Derby. Some people witnessed it. One guy even went on a betting app and put some cash down on Mystik Dan because he suspected I must know something about horse racing. (I don't).
Of course, I end up winning a $55 gift certificate (which will get me a nice prime rib). The guy who put money on the app won a shitload and bought me the rest of my drinks for the evening. And everyone thinks I'm some kind of horse race betting genius.

I thought Sierra Lione bumped Forever Young all down the stretch
Sierra Lione did that in another race as well. They said he could have easily been disqualified in that race. Said it's an ongoing issue for him veering left into other horses. It probably just cost Forever Young the Derby. You just hate to see that in a race that big. The jockey on Forever Young was incredible getting that horse to go down the stretch if you watch him the last 1/4 of the race. The horse literally almost got bumped off his feet at one point. Dude is special and will be a great one.

@@FatherNatureCNY Forever Young initiated rounding the corner. It's unfortunate. I understand the frustration and yes, Sierra Lione has had issues. For me, it didn't cross the line though was mighty close. At any rate, Mystic Dan had a favorable trip while Sierra Lione had the worst of the three.

I was laughing my butt off at this outcome. Great Race! 'Mysticism' was in the air, and I knew the various favorites would not win. For all the stat geeks out there... question: How often has a trainer had his colt AND filly win the Derby and the Oaks in the same year? McPeek's 150th x 2! Mass props, Kenny.
My first time betting on the Derby, I picked Mystik Dan, something about the name just jumped out to me.. I'm just mad at myself for deciding to decrease the bet size at the last second... I still did ok though.. great race, it had me on my feet for sure, especially when Dan grabbed the lead coming out of that final turn.

This announcer missed Mystik Dan being on the lead for a full 16th of a mile before he realized he missed it . Reminds me of them missing Rich Strike and Mine that Bird also a miss by the announcer .
One of the problems in the two races you reference is that the cluster of outside horses entering the stretch gets the immediate attention of the race caller. To be fair, in-house announcer Travis Stone spotted the winner's move several seconds ahead of NBC's Larry Collmus.

Sierra Leone ran as I expected but I gained deep respect for FY after that battle. Both were fantastic rides and a great win for Mystic Dan.
More accurate call than Larry Collmus, who was too obsessed with Sierra Leone and Fierceness to notice Mystik Dan's brilliant launch off the final turn to open up a 3 length lead, and failed to even mention his name down the stretch until 1/4 to go. Absurd.

Sierra Leon clobbered japan horse first down top.of stretch from.outside.then bumped each other all way down stretch. thought be inquiry on S. l. taken down to 3rd. think japan get clobbered from outside and down stretch. he would of won race, S. L. second and mystic dan 3rd. bad ride by jockey bumping all.way down stretch. not changing leads maybe enough clear horse of trouble..just glad the 2 chalks didnt win derby. nice see longshot win it..Good job Mc.peek. got oaks and derby. salute you. racing gods on your side derby stretch cause those 2 closimg om you to win. bumping way to much. lost energy to win it. still.almost did. Both the 2nd and 3rd ought to have passed the winner but had a prolonded barging match and each rashed the others chace... Tha said the winning ride was briliant and the race was won off the final bend with Brian Hernandez making an inspired and brave move to fly up the rail and kick on.. I wonder what words were exchanged between the riders of the 2nd and 3rd

People say Mystik Dan won't hold off the other two, Sierra Leone and Forever Young, in the next two legs of the Triple Crown, (Preakness or Belmont) . But I hope they are mistaken. MD has bloodlines stretching back to the Godolphin Arabian sire line, which is rare (most Tbreds trace back to Darley Arabian). He would be a good candidate to keep that line alive, if he can grab another victory. Congrats to all. And good luck, Mystik Dan!
