April and Jalopniks aren't wrong. In 2018, I bought a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis LS, fully optioned with 70K miles from an elderly couple in near mint condition for $4,000 cash. Six years later and now with 140K miles, it is hands down better than any other commuter car I've ever bought in my 30+ years of driving. My work provides me a 2018 Toyota Camry LE with 35K miles on it to drive for business. At the end of the day, I can't wait to trash the Camry and get back in the Mercury, the Mercury is so much better. The seats are just so plush and soft for that "drive the living room sofa" feel while the Camry has the "drive the concrete park bench" feel. And the V8 in the Mercury is so smooth that I often don't even know it is running, while the Camry's 4-cylinder is harsh at idle and while it revs up like a hamster on a wheel.

I bought a 97 Crown Victoria LX exactly one year ago, I agree 100% with what you are saying! I know the 97 Crown Vic has different steering and suspension to a 2004, but still... the ride and comfort is just amazing. I've had Volvos for the past 15 years, and they decent cars, but they don't compare to the ride and comfort of the panther platform.

I guess it's worth pointing out how much fuel the Mercury uses compared to the Camry. I know it doesn't matter if your commute is short, but with a longer commute the cost of fuel could be significant.

@@richarda3659 my commute is 50 miles one way. The cost of fuel is meaningless as I paid $4K for the car. I don't have a car payment (no loan and interest) and registration and insurance is quite substantially less. The 10 mpg difference in fuel becomes insignificant in cost compared to an overall more costly newer car.

In late 1984 my parents bought a 1985 Buick LeSabre Collector's Edition.
That Buick was extremely comfortable the seats were very pillow-like and the suspension was very cushy with that combination made for one very relaxing and comfortable ride .

I had a 1980 MB 300SD. $600 car that leaked fluids and looked almost abandoned, but it rode and drove like a big old S class. The cruise control even worked! Used it as my daily driver for years and eventually sold it for $1000. I can still see the oil stain in front of my old house on google maps.

Rented a Sixth Generation early 2000's Buick Century and drove it 16 hours round trip and it was almost the most comfortable car only beat by a Volvo S80 that was THE most comfortable car I've ever driven. I put a conversion van in another class and my 1985 Gladiator Coversion Van was the best doing a cross country and back trip of about 10k miles. As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇

My dad had great taste in comfortable cars, he bought a 1972 Mercury Marquise Brougham, and a 1978 Olds Toronado. Other than the brand new 1972 Datsun 240Z he came driving home in, the Toronado he drove home was class, looked like a million bucks to this 12 yo kid. It was white on white with a red dash, and accents. It was a custom order from someone else who didn't follow through with the deal when it arrived at the dealer. My dad got a good deal so bought it. I eventually wound up with both as the years wound down. In 75 when I got my license I received the Brougham, and then when I was about 20 I wound up with the Olds as dad bought himself a Caddy which he had always wanted. The Olds Toronado, and the Mercury Marquise Brougham were both boats of a car, but they were comfortable, that's why dad bought them! 😁👍✌🗽

One needs to define what is mean by comfortable. The 123 Mercedes, Of which I have owned four and my family many others over the years, is exceptionally comfortable, compared to most other vehicles out there but it's a different type of comfort compared to a Brougham, or Grand Marquis etc. They are softer and smoother around town yes, but the 123 is a better long distance (and I mean LONG distance) traveller. Of course most people in the US are familiar only with the diesels but I have a lot more experience with the Gas models and they are far more refined. Actually all Mercedes of that era, and their products from before that era - back into the 50's and 60's are in a class of their own in terms of ride and comfort. Mercedes did things their own way and didn't care what anybody else thought. That has all changed now. And I'll specifically mention the W116 Mercedes S-Class from 72 to 79. For me that is one of the absolutely most comfortable cars ever. Superb combo of both suspension, seats, and handling.

My uncle's buddy had an '85 300TD and I rode it a few times in the late 80ies, and it was comfortable as well as quiet and fast. I remember once we were on Highway 10 in Quebec on our way to Sherbrooke, and we passed a cop on an overpass. He turned on the lights and I glanced at the speedo, and we were at 170 km/h (about 105 MPH). I asked François if he had seen the cop as I looked over my shoulder and saw him coming down the the on-ramp, and he accelerated to just under 200.km/h. "Nope" was all he said. I mumbled something about cops having radios, but we arrived at our destination unhindered by any law enforcement. I am guessing that the 123s you owned were rather worn Hoovie.

For me personally, the Lexus IS300 F Sport was my bread and butter most comfortable car I ever owned. Off course putting it on air ride only made it THAT much nicer. I was able to do a 4hr drive to Tail of the Dragon. Get out, turn the dampers up and have some fun. Then before heading home, turn the dampers back to soft, and just float home. After 12 hours in the car total, I felt great. Plus having the heated and cooled seats meant no matter what time of year it was, you were comfortable. Great seat adjust-ability to hit the spots just right when you're back was sore or stiff, quiet interior, yeah just a great cruising car. What comes in second was a 1988 Honda Accord LX Wagon. Those seats absorbed so much shock from the road it didn't matter that I lowered it all the way to ground. It felt wonderful. Something I've noticed is, the longer wheel base cars do seem to be more comfortable overall. I'm sure part of it is due to the market they are sold after, but the longer wheel base sure does a better job of absorbing discomfort from the road.

I love the ride of my 2006 Lincoln Town Car Designer. The air ride in the back and soft springs on the front along with the super comfortable seats makes it such a pleasure to drive. I also like the fact it’s easy to work on and parts are cheap. I only have 40k miles on it but I baby the car and know it will go forever if taken care of it. I bought it a year ago from the original owner when it had 25k on it. All I’ve done was change all the fluids and some other preventative maintenance like the serpentine belt, coolant hoses, spark plugs and stuff related to that. You can get a really nice low mileage example for around 10-12 grand. You can pick one up for 5-7 grand that has 80-100k on it. It’s definitely one of the best deals you can get for a really good comfortable car. It’s not going to win any races or awards for styling but it moves along well and gets good gas mileage on the highway for the size of it.

Fun fact about the actress who played the 3-boob woman - she played a TNG character, Ensign Sonya Gomez, who was kinda sorta going to be romance interest for Geordi.
She spilled hot chocolate on Captain Picard and she was only in one episode after that.

Some of the worst seats ever were in a 2002 E430 (the non-orthopedic option). It was like sitting on two icy wooden boards.

My folks had a 1994 Ford E150 (with the 351W), that was customized by the now defunct Choo Choo Customs of Chattanooga, TN. It was a 'low top' van and had an Audiovox TV and VCR between the front seats built into the GIANT console with a cooler up front. In 1994 it was a big deal to have a TV in your car.
My 1996 Ford E350 'Born Free' RV has those Captain's Chairs in them like you're talking about, but, I'll be honest, they could use some more 'bolstering'. You should look into an Born Free RV Hoovie, they were built in Iowa, and were built to a better standard than any other coaches of the day, and I would argue better than any modern ones. Unfortunately, they closed down in 2016. What a shame.

I've never heard you (or the Car Wizard) mention when discussing Citroens, the safety factor of that weird steering wheel post. It's designed so that it will not be jammed through your body in the event of a front end collision. Likewise, the engine and passenger compartments are designed so that front end impact drives the engine underneath the passengers instead of into them.

I would say the most comfortable car I have ever been in was my 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V Cartier edition with the white leather seats with blue accents. Insanely comfortable seats and the deepest plush pile carpeting

April April, since you have April's Garage,it's time to get some overalls,a jack and jack stands ,some tools and I would like to see you remove the transmission, you can do it ,but if you need help put a post up asking for any mechanics out there to come and help , I'm sure there will be willing lads who would lay under a car with you to help remove the transmission, Hoovie seeing this may lift his game and start doing things with his hands that involves Tools !
