Trent Reznor wrote this song, Johnny Cash covered it and changed a few of the lyrics. He also released a moving video to the song. Trent claims that as soon as he began watching the video, he felt tears well up. Trent said that he felt that he had written that song for Johnny Cash without even knowing it. Cash died a few months after the songs release as did his wife that was in the video. Trent stated publicly that he had never been so moved by one single performance than Cash's rendition of his own song.
what are u smoking ?Aaron is one of the best ! i seen him 3 wks ago best concert ever ! he was so awsome live ! its the recording that u seam to think is horrible ! Aaron is one of the best dont hate becuase you havent seen him live !
Since my stroke, this is my theme song. I love Aaron's version, written by Trent Reznor of NIN, and borrowed by Johnny Cash... all of them do my pain justice!
Everything Aaron does is so real and makes all who take the to listening I'm sure will find something to relate to thanks Aaron and the band for making music that we as fans can relate to
i love this..yet another good cover of this song..hearing Cash sing it was so sad because of his voice and the way he sang it..and Aaron's is just amazing too
I can sing all three versions but this is the one I like most. Granted, nobody can sound just like Aaron, except maybe that one kid who got to jam with him in Atlantic City. I can do this almost spot on, love this version. Aaron turns everything into gold.
i agree with aaron this song is beautiful it brings me 2 tears every time i hear it aaron and johnny cash's music will always b put down as the best ever
hes a great artist, the best at that. they all have a night where it may not please everyone. but this time he did this song, he did it different, i dont mean to start anything, as far as warmth i love how he did it, lke i said different, the beginning was more raw then he got warmer and it was his own ways and then put feeling into the song. i do think he did great in making it his own version.
every version i have heard of this song has been great and all 3 ppl i heard do this aaron johnny and trent all put everything they had into it cuz all of them can relate to this song with things through out their lives
This song is about loving.. I will let you down.. I will make you hurt... To love someone,is to be vulnerable.. If your not willing to do that, you can never truly love back.. Sometimes you have to give before you receive.... Sometime love hurts... But its also the greatest feeling in life you can truly give selflessly.. I believe thats what this songs about.
I notice people often comment on Aaron playing the guitar poorly... I quote Aaron when I met him, "I know enough to get me by." (Referring to playing the guitar) I will not let the shit talkers prevail as they so often do here on UA-cam - Aaron Lewis is one of the most genuine dudes I've ever met. So chill the fuck out on those hate comments.
no u right doe... he makes up for his clunks on guitar with his voice... i would never go to one of his shows for his guitar playing... its his spine-chilling voice... gets me everytime
NiN Hurt live, almost any live version. You can't touch that emotion Reznor projects. Trent lived it, breathed it, loved it and OWNS it. Pure Live Emotion BY T.R. and NIN makes it the song that every one wants to cover.
the arguing about who's song this is is taking away from aaron's performance of it which i think is beautiful and touching. trent and johnny would agree i think :)
I personally like the effect of the "buzzy" frets. Gives it more character, kinda like the effects Trent Reznor used on the original version. Good stuff.
💣Omg I love the way he sang this song Johnny Cash was so Awesome June Cater Cash was so funny and those 2 were so in love and now there together again. Awesome Job Aaron I love your version🥀☝️
i think the best job to put feelings in a song did aaron lewis hmm i mean feelings... a big word and nine inch nails put a lotta feelings on theire quiet kind of that song too but when i hear the 3 versions, i get touched the most from aaron lewis's cover version wath do you think? ^^
@catseatingclouds Ok, let's see how many of your non-mainstream musicians can sit down, just them and a guitar, and still leave so many of us in complete awe! His voice is his instrument, he doesn't need a whole band to back him up, he doesn't even need the guitar. I listen to a ton of different styles of music from many decades, and his voice is one of the most incredible I've ever heard!
I'm kind of sick of hearing people talk about nine inch nails and johnny cash in the comments of this video. the're both great but you can see tons of people talk about it on their videos. personally I really liked this version Aaron Lewis did. it's not my favorite version of hurt but when he screamed "you can have it all" I think it topped both Johnny Cash and Trent when they sang it. just my opinion, but I think Aaron should get more recognition for covering this.
Number One Streams You do know that Johnny Cash got this song from Nine Inch Nails right? I agree Johnny Cash had a great version, but it was originally written and performed by Trent Reznor.
Shaun White Thanks for your update, i do not know that this Song is not written by Jonny Cash Bud in my opinium Trent Reznor is to young for this Song, Jonny did it better.
Shaun White I was shocked to learn that there were so many people who didn't realize this is NIN. Cash did a lovely cover, but it was basic, the gorgeous Mark Romanek video made his version. And Trent agrees - I read an interview where he said that when he was first asked to allow Cash to cover it, he thought it was a little absurd, he was like, "here I am with this song that I wrote in a moment of frailty in my bedroom, and Johnny Cash wants to do it?" or something to that effect. But he said that later he was in the studio doing his thing, and a copy of the video came in, and they took a break and watched it, and after that, Trent said, "it's his song, now."
Personally I think I like the Cash version the best, but this is an amazing cover of the song. Aaron is an amazing musician and performer. I think he makes the song his own.
awe blah blah blah, he sounds great, ive seen him in concert and hes got a real voice unlike alot of singers that have their voice all altered with little magic devices.
Why can't people just listen to music... I want to hear what people think about the song and whether it be good or bad thats it.. We don't need 30 comment arguments covering up the space where people should be writing about the song
Don't get why people Are saying he is drunk. He smoked weed his whole life until about a year ago. He never drank before. He does now though. So he is not drunk here. Probably extremely high though.
Corey Taylor is a rockstar too and since 2008 clean. Aaron had a bad childhood especially cuz of his parents. They were hippies and he wrote a few songs about it. I think that is the main reason he is used to weed and alcohol and not because he is a rockstar. A rockstar makes it easier to buy this stuff and found the time to consume it still at work. The excitement of the stage it is all a nice combination to give in to drugs. That is why most of the time Vocals dies on drugs and not other bands members. All eyes on them +drugs = this can escalate quickly.
Andrew Billerbeck there aren’t any fucked up chords. This sounds exactly how the studio version does. He’s covering the original version, not Johnny Cash
Is there any song, any genre of music, that this dude cannot perform? His vocal range is fucking incredible....
11 years later. The answer is no. He can do it all. Guns N' Roses, screams, rock, country. Best vocalist of our time.
He could sing the phone book and make you cry 😭 one of the greatest songwriters/singer
Trent Reznor wrote this song, Johnny Cash covered it and changed a few of the lyrics. He also released a moving video to the song. Duck Mann thanks for the info man I didn't know that. Hurt is simply one of the best songs ever recorded
Duck Mann Johnny cash hands down bro
Coach Sal Cash's version is the very best of them
Aaron Lewis. is there anything you can't do?
Lmao
Aaron Lewis is one of the greats in my book
Freddy Fatbear 100% agree
Aaron Lewis is one of the absolutely best vocalists in rock music!
This was my first Aaron lewis concert. I have been addicted ever since.
he's covering the NIN version, which you can tell by the way he's playing.
But man....Aaron is golden :D
The pain in his voice makes every cover so much better, where do we request covers for him to sing? I want a lot of my fave songs in his voice lol
Go to his concert and yell stuff out. He picks songs that the crowd wants to gear.
i want to gear a song please
Joanna Fernandez Yes, his voice's emotion in What Hurts The Most is really touchin.
aaron lewis + acoustic guitar = EPICNESS!!
The worst kind of pain is the kind that isn't self chosen
If anyone has heard trents version you would understand his guitar part is dead on that last note is supposed to be a sour note
No matter who's version I hear it always brings tears to my eyes. Very moving.. The words speak to the heart. I think we all feel like this sometimes.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life
aarons breath taking when he sings and plays.. his voice has this healing power
hats off to NIN for writing this! Johnny and everyone else have done a great job at putting there spin on it!
Finally someone doing a cover Trentesque
This mans voice can accomplish any song ever written. Aarons and brent smith from shinedown, are my favorite voices out there
listening to good ass music while in lockdown
Love this version of one of the best songs ever written.
what are u smoking ?Aaron is one of the best ! i seen him 3 wks ago best concert ever ! he was so awsome live ! its the recording that u seam to think is horrible ! Aaron is one of the best dont hate becuase you havent seen him live !

I was at this concert... this concert made me a life long fan..

i like how he did the song like Johnny Cash. good tribute! AArons badass
this is such an amazing song. every version ive ever heard has been awesome.
all 3 of these are all amazing :D
i agree with aaron this song is beautiful it brings me 2 tears every time i hear it aaron and johnny cash's music will always b put down as the best ever
Used to watch this guy play acoustic in a small dive in West Springfield Ma. 15 years ago. He was awesome even back then.
hes a great artist, the best at that. they all have a night where it may not please everyone. but this time he did this song, he did it different, i dont mean to start anything, as far as warmth i love how he did it, lke i said different, the beginning was more raw then he got warmer and it was his own ways and then put feeling into the song. i do think he did great in making it his own version.
amazing. he is one of the most versatile singers out there.
he does great cover and this is one of them.
and he always makes the chorus that much better.
One of my favorite songs... covered by my favorite singer.
This is great
every version i have heard of this song has been great and all 3 ppl i heard do this aaron johnny and trent all put everything they had into it cuz all of them can relate to this song with things through out their lives
i love aaron lewis but this song was already gold man. it was gold when trent did it
Johnny made several albums after this so I don't think it could be the last song he ever made. But you are right, it's awesome.
Very wise person you are, you have a great head on your shoulders there, and you are right.
the cover done by wevendust is pretty good too but aaron is by far one fo the best cover artists out there he got that unique voice
Tommorow! Hope he plays this song.
this dude is like a fucking saint on the Mic
This song is about loving.. I will let you down.. I will make you hurt... To love someone,is to be vulnerable.. If your not willing to do that, you can never truly love back.. This makes drug addiction beautiful ! ! !
still wouldn't recommend it though ;)
NO CROWNS 👑 OF SHAME BABY!!! Your more than deserving of My LOVE and everyone and everything else! YOU ARE MY KING!
Best song ever about death it's perfect and simple. We live love and die.Hopfully we all meet in heaven for eternity.
no u right doe... he makes up for his clunks on guitar with his voice... i would never go to one of his shows for his guitar playing... its his spine-chilling voice... gets me everytime
he "buzes the frets" for effect. He is an amazing vocalist and guitarist!
Absolutely amazing
I have so much respect for Aaron and Staind.
Aaron is a God.
what are you talking about..i love aarons music..
NiN Hurt live, almost any live version. You can't touch that emotion Reznor projects. Trent lived it, breathed it, loved it and OWNS it. Pure Live Emotion BY T.R. and NIN makes it the song that every one wants to cover.
he can cover any song an make it good!!!
Amazing
the arguing about who's song this is is taking away from aaron's performance of it which i think is beautiful and touching. trent and johnny would agree i think :)
I personally like the effect of the "buzzy" frets. Gives it more character, kinda like the effects Trent Reznor used on the original version. Good stuff.
This voice is so damn awesome...
💣Omg I love the way he sang this song Johnny Cash was so Awesome June Cater Cash was so funny and those 2 were so in love and now there together again. Awesome Job Aaron I love your version🥀☝️
Wonderful voice!
Awesome.
i think the best job to put feelings in a song did aaron lewis hmm i mean feelings... a big word and nine inch nails put a lotta feelings on theire quiet kind of that song too but when i hear the 3 versions, i get touched the most from aaron lewis's cover version wath do you think? ^^
What have I become?
My sweetest friend...
Everyone I know,
Goes away, in the end...
@catseatingclouds Ok, let's see how many of your non-mainstream musicians can sit down, just them and a guitar, and still leave so many of us in complete awe! I admit - everytime I hear this song, two salty rivers run down my face
lol have you ever seen aaron lewis or staind live ??? He was the best live singer i have ever heard!
I'm kind of sick of hearing people talk about nine inch nails and johnny cash in the comments of this video. the're both great but you can see tons of people talk about it on their videos. personally I really liked this version Aaron Lewis did. it's not my favorite version of hurt but when he screamed "you can have it all" I think it topped both Johnny Cash and Trent when they sang it. just my opinion, but I think Aaron should get more recognition for covering this.
he does this amazing! Johnny would be proud!
Not really, this isn't even his song.
Daisy Douglas song was not wrote for cash, was wrote in 80's or 90's
Daisy Douglas
Yup. The original song is by Nine Inch Nails. Cash covered it.
*Trent Reznor* would be proud =)
"Johnny would be proud"???? He aint singing "When The Man Comes Around"!....SMH.....LOL!
i love his solo concerts because he just doesn't give a damn he plays what they want to hear, and then some
It`s actually a mix of both, If I remember correctly too I believe he was wingin` it in this video.
rest in peace Johnny Cash!!!
Number One Streams You do know that Johnny Cash got this song from Nine Inch Nails right? I agree Johnny Cash had a great version, but it was originally written and performed by Trent Reznor.
Shaun White
Thanks for your update, i do not know that this Song is not written by Jonny Cash
Bud in my opinium Trent Reznor is to young for this Song, Jonny did it better.
GoodMusic Trent's too young for this song? Do you even know what the song is about?
Nine inch nails wrote the song Johnny cash redid it
oh yeahhh
I like the chords of the Johnny Cash cover more but nobody can sing this like Aaron Lewis!
its exactly what he said its a cross between the 2
wow, this is amazing :) Nine Inch Nails is my most favorite band, Staind being second so this is truely mind-blowing for me
Personally I think I like the Cash version the best, but this is an amazing cover of the song. Aaron is an amazing musician and performer. I think he makes the song his own.
Wow, men breathless wordless you make me
thanks again...great video
terrific vocals !
Fkin awesome!.. lol that dude.. "very nice, very nice.."
@Herps85 it was A LANDMARK SUCESS when he did best song in the best album of all time
Colossal is Crazy did a good job
he's the best :)
How does a smoker have that unfaltering voice? Fucking talented! Fretted guitar notes and all still nearly brought tears to my eyes. awesome
my favorite cover of him nw :D
Yeah, thanks. That could be right.
awe blah blah blah, he sounds great, ive seen him in concert and hes got a real voice unlike alot of singers that have their voice all altered with little magic devices.
I wish he would of done JR Cash's version. I personally like that one better, but it is a powerful song!
Why can't people just listen to music... I want to hear what people think about the song and whether it be good or bad thats it.. We don't need 30 comment arguments covering up the space where people should be writing about the song
I did not know that Bloobly; TY!
you are right
also a very good version
Don't get why people Are saying he is drunk. He smoked weed his whole life until about a year ago. He never drank before. He does now though. So he is not drunk here. Probably extremely high though.
Bax Even if he is, he's a fucking rock star. I would expect nothing less. He has to do something to forget that deal with the devil he made....
All eyes on them +drugs = this can escalate quickly.
honestly what ever he sings sounds good even though it is live.
i wanna see him live!!!!!
God bless Trent Reznor, Johnny Cash and Aaron Lewis.
this is the best cover of this song next to cash's version!!!R.I.P Johnny Cash aka "Man in Black"
Minus the effed up chords, he is absolutely amazing. i can't wait to see Staind on April 18th!
Andrew Billerbeck there aren’t any fucked up chords. This sounds exactly how the studio version does. He’s covering the original version, not Johnny Cash
@canadianblackhawk im glad somebody said it
funkyhardkor, I don't know where you heard that but you are completely wrong... Reznor wrote it.
