Oh my God, did she just say "I wanted the characters to have flaws"? She wants them to seem like genuine people, and not some 2d superficial personoid that has no flaws or struggles whatsoever? When someone writes in characters with that mindset, you're bound to create something wonderful, and your stories will at least have fleshed out characters even if the plot is "cliche". I applaud her, and thank her for keeping, at the very least, an integral part of storytelling alive.

@@higaiwokeru ah, that's one example I feel would fit that description, yes. I simply see storytelling on the decline in multiple works today, the character aspect specifically. If it were something where the characters didn't matter, like a slasher, that's one thing... however I've observed what should have been character-focused stories delegate their attention to making characters flawless, and removing all genuine emotion or talent from them in the process. This hurts storytelling, I feel, it's the difference between shoddy ice cream made out of incredibly cheap ingredients and better quality ice cream. You can enjoy both, sure, but if you truly pay attention the rich flavor of one makes the other pale in comparison. This can be said for modern storytelling, and the cheaper stuff keeps coming out more than the rich stuff in my opinion.

I feel like people don’t see enough movies to know that such a goal is not that much of a rarity at all. Heck it’s not even much of the case in TV shows either. This ramble is just too cringy to take seriously as it shows how ill informed people are when it comes to this stuff.
The scene where Mandy wakes up to her alarm and goes back into work after what seemed like seconds after such a “rough shift” definitely hits home. Night shift RN fun! As my friend once brought to all our attention - “can you believe we’re here twice in the same day??” Thanks for covering this super fun movie, James!

This is such a great lesson for directors. Making a minority character really great at everything or instantly liked by all the other characters doesn't make them badass, it just makes them boring and unrealistic.
This is what we in the Biz like to call, a "Mary Sue".

As an Arkansa native, I was immediately horrified that the movie would make us all look like idiots. But it had a decent diversity of characters, and I don’t feel like it reflected too negatively on Arkansas. It’s actually nice to have something set in Arkansas for once, especially something not set in a rural area, but in a modern area.
He can say “gives no fucks nurse with a drug addiction” and UA-cam is fine with it.

Mortician here checking in! I have never seen a dead body spray blood like that - arterial spray requires a beating heart. Dead people just slowly ooze out blood when you cut them, if they bleed at all (someone experienced can avoid any major veins or arteries). But kudos on showing an accurate morgue! They are always SO MUCH SMALLER than depicted on tv and movies, and generally very dark and out of date compare to the rest of the hospital.
Also the head nurse was right to be very shocked and disturbed about what Mandy was doing down in the morgue. I have never seen a nurse in the morgue even one time. Porters do all of the moving people in and out of them.
Mr Kent is my favourite character in this movie. The way he just carries these kidneys around not knowing that everyone is searching for them is hilarious.
I love how James’s hair wiggles like a plate of jello, it’s definitely mesmerizing 💜

The non-franchise Kill Count videos are actually the most interesting videos on the channel. I admit that I skip super unknown ones a lot but they are so good to revisit.

I agree with how she wrote the female characters, that is why Ripley and Sarah Connor are such Iconic woman protagonists, because they aren't perfect. Sarah Connor is hell-bent on preparing John for the War that she is never his mom, and Ripley l, whilst being a badass, is pretty much just a normal person having to deal with the xenomorph.
Ripley was also written originally as a genderless character, so the fact that she was a woman didn't even factor into how they wrote the character

Well that is a line I never expected on a Kill Count video.
I live in the town this was filmed in and everyone was so excited to hear about the project! Some people even got to play bodies and patients!
The only thing I could think about while watching this kill count was the scene from the first Saw where Adam wakes up and checks his body to make sure all his kidneys are still there
I love how many interesting movies I've been introduced to simply because I really want to watch the Kill Count--it really helps my ADHD brain settle down and just watch something new. This was a treasure of a movie. Also my favourite part of the KC was the addition of Mick Foley's music and the little "bah gawd" over the bit where he's walking to the building at the end 😂

Angela Bettis is sooo underrated as an actor. She's been in May and The Woman, two of my favorite horrors, and many other good projects and she always kills it with her performances.
She was also in an anthology episode of Masters of Horror called "Sick Girl". You should really check that one out
this movie had me gasping left and right! also, enforced my crush on David Arquette. why do we paint hospitals that band-aid beige? makes me ill just looking at it! I love these grey characters; not all bad, not all good. definitely one of my favourite movies from 2020!

As a healthcare worker thank you James, for keeping me calm through this stressful time. My first actual girlfriend left me recently and I work has been a hassle but the channel and the podcast keep my mind off bad thoughts because I suffer from manic bipolar disorder.
