Shogo, I would like to see you review games with katanas like ghost of Tsushima, avengers, Bushido Blade, etc I'm just really interested in your thoughts and thought it might be fun for you, your friends, and any teachers or students willing to review them.
As a iaido trainee, I love this video with explanations of each step of the kata. Hope to see more of it. Thank you Shogo.
I wish he would answer us.
Great step by step lessons empalhasizing little details for beginners like myself. Thank you Shoo.
Hi. My sensei always gets me to let the sword’s weight do the striking. This improves flexibility in the body and enables moves to be fluid.
I wish I had a Sensei
As someone who practices Iai in this case Seitei I can't stress enough for all practitioners to perfect your Reiho. Reiho should be treated like a kata. And personally it's the most challenging part of Seitei. Opening and closing Reiho as well as Mae dictate the skill set you have to the judges before you start the set.
I agree, first thing judges see
Me too
As a new starter in iaido I'm actually quite surprised by the level of detail and nuance in reiho and can see already how a smooth and calm reiho is important.
@@iamOwenG remember Seitei is not practical. It's about showing control over the sword and ones body. That's the purpose. So show the intent of the kata the purpose for each movement. But showing calmly, precise and sharp. Don't rush it.
Of course seitei is perfectly practical.
Tsuka Ate - Your right knee collapses to the left when you turn to thrust. Try stepping more in line with your left knee to help ameliorate this tendency. Keep you ko- and kusuriyubi a bit tighter to avoid the kissaki dipping in kaburi.Nice big cut and nice otherwise!
Howdy brother Shogo; I have taken up Iaido, following your example. I am really jazzed about it; thank you for turning me onto this great martial art👍👍
You don't know how helpful this is for artists like me, especially with the different camera angles
I love how serious he looks when training iaido
Thank you for the step by step evaluation and explanation. Wonderful job! ❤️
You are so welcome!🤗
Great content. Now i'm only a shôdan in znkr. But did notice some things. If I may. Sword tip in mae and ushiro, dips a small bit in o-chiburi , and are not straight. And in kesagiri, when doing hasso-no-kamae, it then looks like your left foot turns slightly inwords, and are not straight. And one more thing, when doing nôto, your koryu shows thro too mutch. Not znkr start vertikal going to horisontel. I'm so sorry if I affened you senpai shogo.
i love your critical analysis of your art. Being able to look objectively and dispassionately will take you far in iaido.
I really appreciate this video. I am playing a Blind Samurai in my upcoming dnd campaign, so I want to learn more about this art, so I can play my character as well as I can
Ushiro - Keep your feet together when rising ito kiza. You need much more sayabiki and need to smooth the whole kata into a continuous movement…analogue rather than digital!
i am glad u made this video. it is very informative, esp for ppl like me who doesnt know and wud assume what i see is correct
Have a nice day! very cool and informative videos about iaido! Thank you very much.
Just got started with Iaido, great video! Thank you
Morotetsuki- A little ponderous! Keep it going as teki will not stand and wait for you! For nukitsuke, seme a little higher (tsukakashira to the about ones hairline) so the sword can drop onto teki’s head and then thrust immediately….no pausing! Keep the sword in the midline as you perform hiki nuki and turn. Sword should be completely horizontal after each cut, not dipped! I notice now that you’re not making koiguchi correctly. One should not be able to see the saya’s koiguchi and you may even feel the blade sides slide along your ‘boshi naitenkin’ (thenar webspace)
37 years ago I much enjoyed training in Iiado. Fine skill to have. Best
Just got back from my daily routine so great timing
i like your kamidana. are there any "do nots" that a person should observe or honor when in the presence of the kamidana or it's sacred space? as always, thank you for sharing your videos!
Yo!!Thnks for making such informative vids...your vids are realy helpful
Wow, I’ve never actually seen all of the Kendo Renmei seitei kata in a row before. It’s interesting to learn how y’all do things.
Is each waza from a different ryuha, like the Zen Nihon Iaido Renmei’s Toho no Bu?
Keep up the hard work. ✨
Yes, ZNKR kata is made up of a combination of different styles. I'm pretty sure the english and japanese youtube channels for ZNKR feature information as to where these kata came from and when they were added.
I just got my 6th kyu! Iaido is very challenging I’ve been learning about 5 months
Love your iaido contents! Thanks for the tips and guidance as well! 😊
Uke Nagashi - Nice Uke nagashi. The sword is too low after the kesagiri and too wide. The kissaki should be just outside the body width. Your back foot is not facing directly to the front but at 90 degrees! Naughty!😃
Same point , back foot needs to be at 11 o clock after cut
Thank you and your style is great
I enjoyed the video great information and I love when you execute your work out thanks Shogo love you until later my friend
You are a great inspiration to me, Shogo! I would love to practice with you one day! I hope you are well!!
I practiced Kendo as a teen, and really want to do some Iaido. The nearest location is like 2 hours away though, so I may only be able to go once a week. Any input from the community of practitioners on whether or not this is enough for meaningful training?
Perhaps supplement your dojo training with an online course perhaps?
Kesagiri - You must keep you right hand as low as possible when the monouchi is cutting into teki’s wakibara. Otherwise this is not a proper cut. You have to really flex your wrist to do this. It’s very hard! A little to wide at the end of kirioroshi. Nice cuts though…nice and fluid. You look a little too square in hasso no kamae…like the Jodo version. try angling slightly
Thanks Shogo, this is what I needed for my seitei iai exam tomorrow :)
Hmm nice
I believe even a 10th dan would criticize himself. That's what I love about Japan. Perfectionism is not something you will reach, but only can thrive after.
This was probably so helpful for yourself too!
Thank you, very useful hints!
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
🙏
I hope this is ok. 🙏🏽 My teacher and Morita sensei and Oshita sensei have grilled me over the years in all this!
Great video Shogo!! I hope you make a similar video with kata 7-12. I hope the Shinza went well.
Hello I'm a martial artist who has been training for about 7 years now, but I am new to sword training with the katana. I was wondering if you know of any schools for practicing katanas in America Lansing Michigan, but I do not want to put to much work on you if you do not know. Love your videos 😁👍
I am curious about your noto. I am learning MSR, and when we do Seitei kata, we noto with the blade parallel to the ground. It seems you bring the blade over the top of your hand. Is this a koryu technique bleeding over into your Seitei, or are both acceptable for Seitei?
Cheers!
You missed the way his sageo is attached then B-)))
It's totally acceptable. His style is MJER, and his noto should reflect that.
Sageo Sabaki and noto are correct as everyone should do it according to their own ryuha. There are a few notes to this but for noto there is a concrete note to say pinky finger should stay at all time in contact with the obi.
“almost 8 years, so not that long!” with martial arts in the states, you would be at the top level and teaching your own classes around that time hahaha
thankyou
Nice!
nice job shogo.
@Let's ask Shogo - What's the reason that some schools have sageo on the center>right and the other on the left? Is it koryu tradition? What about Seitei (Ogura sensei in his tutorial videos have it on the center>right)?
I think with Ukenagashi ,people lift too high to try to move through furikaburi because they don't want the cut too come across as small. Like from behind the head. I should add that I'm completely guilty of this.
You’re not swinging horizontally straight at @5:30 because of your posture.
Your right foot back is too far over.
Look at your shoulders too.
You should be having your shoulders balanced with your upper torso like the mast of a sailing ship.
Hi there, I love your videos, please keep them coming.
I want to ask you a question. I have done many iaido gradings in the past. I just want to know what the commands that is said,
I know they say mae to come forward, and hajime to start, but what is it that they say to move back, it sounds like hadjo or hajo or something like that, can you please tell me what they are saying.
Thank you
Usually the sempai calls "Taijo" when senseis says that the exam has finished.
@@tiklismangawow thank you very much appreciated
The Vergil's marcial art
Hello Shogo, what would you say about the correct angle of noto??
Where do you get the iaito katana
Is it true that the first kata was designed to be performed indoors, potentially in the space of one’s bedroom?
Does it matter what color hakama or obi you use? Is there a set of rules for clothing?
Power the sword with the left, steer with the right.
Shogo I have an interesting question when it came to a samurai Army did they have rankings in it like a modern military as example private to General what I want to know is what were the ranks called how did you get promoted and what did they do that was different depending on your rank?
You will be better
Part 2 in the notes is currently labeled as "PRIVATE!"
It’ll be coming out soon😉
As for Mae - saya-biki, furikaburi... the errors like all of us do...
As someone who love anything japanese i was wondering if you would review my life as geisha movie wich just came out on my netflix and i would love to hear your opinions about the movie
Please do a reaction video for Namazu Ryu Saiken's UA-cam channel. He makes iaido videos also.
🙂✋👍👍
Ochiburi, looked like you almost took your hair off.
I need more practice...and more and even more.
al termine dei kata quando cammini all'indietro sembra quasi un balletto, anche l'espressioni del viso sono poco marziali, sono gentili come presentatore ma la pratica richiede uno sguardo più autorevole
Shogo holds a katana like its not a sharp object, yeah I believe your 7 years of training. 🙈
He uses a Iaitō.. an unsharpened training Katana
