Forging an Adze: Crafting a Unique and Versatile Hand Tool

- In this video I try for the (almost) first time to forge an adze.
A few years ago I got an adze from my uncle. It once belonged to my grandfather and apparently they used it to make wooden gutters.
I took the measurements from that adze when I made this one.
Enjoy!

Very nicely done, a great little adze that will be very useful. You have a lovely family, it’s so good to see you all together, the little one is certainly growing 👍. Regards from Down Under.
Many thanks!
Very cool 👍
Beautiful adze! One of my favorite things to forge and the reason I got into blacksmithing! By the way, you probably know this already but there’s a huge market for adzes….possibly more so than axes
👍
Шедевр ручная работа.
Great video Nils! What I really enjoy is how careful you are with each step, just tickling it enough to how you want it to be rather than just smashing away at the work. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you!

Thank you!
As always I really enjoy your work and the videos. I was happy to see that you made an adze. I don't know why but I have always thought they are one of the most interesting tools made by blacksmiths.
Thank you! They ate quite interesting indeed :)
Nils as an apprentice in a British shipyard in the 1970s we were taught how to use a mast using an adze the adze we used had the grind on the inside of the curve of th blade a traditional tool of the shipwrights at 16 I was taught how to make a mast using an adze and spoke shave the haft was a lot longer as it was used standing over the work piece and swung between your feet a little scary at first 🙂
Nice! Must have been a great experience :)
from the way that thing looks it could even be used to trench out a garden, i never like hoes i found them to be to wide and not angled right . but that thing would make for different hole depts and great spacing between each row. great universal tool.
Im sure it would work for that! maybe a longer handle?
Fantastiskt hantverk!
Nu vet jag vad jag ska testa på i morgon!
Gött! Tack för titten
I noticed this downward tip at the back of the head on quite a few of your tools. Does it serve any purpose like extra stabilisation , or is it more like a personal design feature of yours?
Молодець ! Так тримати !
Който си го може, си го може много добър истромент.
I have a tool very similar to that but the edge bevel is on the underside.
Härligt 👍🏻
Tack!
0:10 Can you keep the hole you're punching from pushing the material outward by setting up blocks on each side that would push it lengthwise? I don't know since I've never seen it done.
1:32 What do you call this single-bevel hammer?
I want to see how this adze cuts!
Do people use any forest adze hoes where you live? I found a very old one in a field with a 6" wide blade over 30 years ago. I cleaned it up and put a strong splitting maul handle on it. It's my favorite digging tool for hard ground.
The single bevel things is a set down tool. Designed only for making set downs at the transition from eye to blade. Regarding your first question, perhaps you could but to me its not an issue. I forge it back later
jättefint hantverk, tack för videon! vet du vad det här verktyget kallas i folkmun i era trakter?
Skölpyxa
Grymt!
Tack!
Bro, whack some wood with it 😭
👍
