Spent about an hour last night trying to get Brill's box with lid from a diagram from 1980. So glad I looked for a video, not recognizing the 3D in step one after the precreases, I was starting off wrong. Though I thought it was around step 13 I wasn't getting. Lol. Just wanted to drop a note that 11 years later these videos are still teaching. Happy folding. :-)
If i ever happened to listen to a female version of Bob Ross, that's you. And by all means: That was a compliment. Your voice is an absolute pleasure to the ear. I'm not into Origami or anything even remotely close to it - but I watched the whole tutorial, not to learn how to create this (awesome!) box, but simply because of your voice. Adorable.
Fantastic tutorial! It is a great design, somewhat tricky to complete. I have been working on this box now for several weeks, off and on. After watching your video a gazillion times and as many tries, I finally got it! I can't imagine making them for a wedding though...you must be able to do them now in your sleep! I just want to thank you for sharing with such patience, especially during such a busy and exciting time in your life! Blessings!
Some people are obviously not really ready to be doing the level of origami that Sara exhibits. Lots of people complain about the difficulty. Worthwhile origami is not easy, but is incredibly satisfying to finish. This model was definitely one of them. Makes a great box for Brill's Double Star flexicube.
Masterful demonstration. This is a challenging project to attempt by just looking at the Dave Brill's diagrams. Your demonstration with your verbal directions made this project so much easier. Thank you.
This is an awesome model, but a tricky fold, for sure. It has taken more than a few tries to get it completed, and mine definitely doesn't look as neat and tidy as yours but...I will keep at it until it is more like yours! You are an awesome instructor, Sarah! And I find those "magic lines" indicating mountain and valley folds really helpful! Thank you!
Thanks AdamsSara for this wonderful video. I was looking for a nice gift box to go with some roses I had made as gifts, and these fit perfectly! Looking forward to more of your work.
Thanks for the excellent video! I noticed that because this box ends up being 1/5 the paper dimensions, it's perfect for holding origami 10-page books created with paper of the same size. It's a neat little gift to make four books, write a little something in them, and present them all in their own "chest" :-)
#myfirst As far as I can remember this was my first introduction to origami videos. I was looking for a way to personalize my wedding and I thought about folding the favors and filling them with homemade chocolate truffles. It was a lot of work, but I've found that folding relaxes me so I was done sooner than expected - 100 "Brill" boxes! Thank you for your wonderful videos. They have helped enrich and enliven my life!
Oh, yes, I remember folding so many boxes for my wedding, too. I don't think I folded quite 100, but close to it. That kept me busy for a while. I remember folding a bunch of them on my flight to the US and back. 12- hour flights have to be good for something, right?
The direction of the creases will be different when you fold accordion style. It only makes a small difference, but it having the creases in the right direction right off will make it a bit easier to fold the model, as well as give a slightly crisper result.
@LegoEddy I am sorry to hear that it is not clear enough for you to follow it. But it's a bit unfair to blame the video. I'm quite sure that all the creases that are drawn on the paper were also demonstrated in the video. Here's some advice: Make stronger creases in the beginning, so that you can see the creases later on. Or draw them in for your first attempt. Also, check after each step that the model looks the same as in the video. If you do one step differently, the rest won't work out.
I made this with some thick scrapbooking paper, which made it a bit difficult, but it turned out pretty good! It ripped when I was making the front of the box, but I used double sided tape to seal it up and I am quite pleased :) Thank you for your tutorial!
@S3844 Aw, that's very sweet. I always do try hard to make things clear and easy to follow. And I do like to believe I'm one of the better origami UA-camrs out there - and it's great to hear at least some share that opinion. :)
This is an awesome model, one I have been trying to master for a very long time! I kept getting hung up on the final finishing. Tenacity pays off, though, and I finally got it, this time! Woo Hoo!!! Now mine doesn't look as professional, neat and tidy as yours but it is complete, and that's no little feat! Thank you, Sarah!
@TheThinkingExpress It might be some creases are slightly off, or that the thickness of the paper is adding too much thickness for the lid to close properly. I've thought a couple of times it might be a good idea to consciously "misplace" some creases to make the lid a bit bigger to balance that out, but haven't tried doing so. Perhaps using thinner paper will do the job for you.
Was definitely a challenge, tore mine just a tiny bit at the very end there. 40 minutes for my first try, not bad ;) Been doing origami for a year now though, and the move from modular kusudama's to more interactive designs has been quite beneficial to my skills.
Oh ,it's very fantastic! Thank you for your intriduction of 'origami'. I think making box is fundamental ,but you are respected to be consider 3D geometry.
@wesleyjordan Good to hear this. :) And I'm sure we'll have a wonderful wedding. What could not be wonderful about celebrating your love with the people you love?
@YOUCANNOTDENY Heh, nice. Unfortunately, Brilliant Origami is out of print. Origami for the Connoisseur has quite different diagrams in them, leading to a model that has many additional creases on the finished box.
@pokestep I only draw in the creases to make them more visible in the video. Yes, in post-recording I remove the sequence where I actually draw the crease lines. It is by no means necessary to draw these lines, but it may help you if you have troubles locating the creases. I myself only draw these lines for my videos, when I fold off-camera I don't add those markings.
@RALLYREDURR In the video I used normal origami paper ("kami"). I also folded lots of boxes for my wedding and used wrapping paper (Kraft paper) there.
Sehr schöne Box, sehr gut erklärtes und gezeigtes Tutorial (Step by step, bit by bit.) Vielen Dank fürs teilen :) Thanks for sharing this nice origami.
@Tigergirloxoxo113 I bought a video camera about 3 years ago. It's not great, and I'd buy a different one now, but it does the job. Many digital cameras nowadays also have a video recording mode, so you could play around with that if you have one. Recording longer videos may not be possible, but you don't need to go crazy like me and record several hours of origami in one go. ;)
@ROBLOXOrigami I added an annotation links to the video showing how to fold fifths. But as it doesn't seem to be obvious, here you go: watch?v=fYH47oPCwbI
@belenbernal498 I'm not sure I understand. Do you want this video to have spanish subtitles? Sorry, I don't know spanish, and someone would have to translate for me. Or are you talking about a different video?
Ich hab es beim zweiten Versuch geschafft! Juhuu!
@xclusivekz I usually post one instructional video a month, sometimes I manage to do two, and very rarely three. Next month is going to be tough, though, as I'm getting married and will be travelling. The videos will keep on coming, though. :)
Did you skip the beginning? The model she was holding was made out of 15x15cm paper and the paper she used in the video was 25x25cm. You can use whatever size paper, just as long as it is square.
thank you so much i really love it i just made one :) but please tell me which paper you used for your wedding's gifts? i think it's more stable and much finer!
I finaly made it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok so it's not as easy as it looks in the video, but after a few tries i finaly got it. Oh and she's rite folding down the triangle does make the final locking part easier, but it's still pretty hard.

It is not so easy but if one takes the time it can be done. Sara does a a great job of demonstrating how it is made. Practice and patience.
I love that you show markings where you folded. That is so helpful.
What a delightful box design... and I love how it is made using only one sheet of paper. I've added this to my list of models to fold :)
Masterful demonstration. This is a challenging project to attempt by just looking at the Dave Brill's diagrams. Your demonstration with your verbal directions made this project so much easier. Thank you.

why do people complain about how long it is, origami is the art of paper folding, it teaches patience, calm, serenity and peace :)
Thanks AdamsSara for this wonderful video.

Wow and wow!!! I'm new to Origami. This design just blows me away. Thanks for posting!!!

Hey! I've got a new tutorial for a box with lid that's easier and faster to fold. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/F-7Ck4Mkzrk/v-deo.html
Thanks for using up your time to teach us how to make this model! THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!!!
@grzincic1 Good to hear I helped you along. It's true that some of the steps for this model are harder to capture in diagrams.
@LegoEddy I am sorry to hear that it is not clear enough for you to follow it. But it's a bit unfair to blame the video. I'm quite sure that all the creases that are drawn on the paper were also demonstrated in the video.

This is amazing, from a single sheet of paper, and I like it more than modular ones. Thanks.
I've done it! It needed some trys and paper, but now I'm done. This really looks beautiful!
I've not been able to make this box until now. The video helped a lot. Thanks!
Great video! I was able to follow a long, with several clicks on pause, and completed first time through!
Wow, all that for a tiny box. Dave Brill, you are amazing!

I like this box very much, I made one to give my mother, thanks for sharing!

thank you dave brill .. you saved my life
Fantastic creation. And you are doing a incredible job at explaining this, without the marker points in the creasing stage I would have been lost =)
I love your voice, you sound robotic... So Awesome! This is a compliment though... don't take it the wrong way.
thank you very much, Sara!!! keep folding!
Was definitely a challenge, tore mine just a tiny bit at the very end there. 40 minutes for my first try, not bad ;) Been doing origami for a year now though, and the move from modular kusudama's to more interactive designs has been quite beneficial to my skills.
I finaly make it!!!thumps up if you think tha adamssara is an amazing teacher for origamis
omg those appearing dotted lines tripped me out!
Worth Watching! Thanks! - Loved the Hidden Triangles of the Hinge!

Thanks for the box. It's awesome how you make magic lines.
Thankyoooooooooooooooooooou! I absolutely loved it. I cant believe I made it !
Your creases drawn by your marker helped a lot! Thanks :)
This is a good origami. It is much easier then other boxes, and I like this one the most! :D
@wesleyjordan Good to hear this. :) And I'm sure we'll have a wonderful wedding. What could not be wonderful about celebrating your love with the people you love?
Gaaaah... 4 minutes in and I gave up. I have no idea how you can be so good at this!

@Tashisbash What did you do the other 2.5 minutes? ;)
@LegoEddy Gratuliere zur erfolgreich gefalteten Box! Und zum Durchhaltevermögen. :) Manchmal will gut Ding eben doch Weile haben.
@RALLYREDURR In the video I used normal origami paper ("kami"). I also folded lots of boxes for my wedding and used wrapping paper (Kraft paper) there.
Sehr schöne Box, sehr gut erklärtes und gezeigtes Tutorial (Step by step, bit by bit.)
Vielen Dank fürs teilen :)
Thanks for sharing this nice origami.
@GiveMeCuchiCuchi You'll want to check that the fifths you fold in the beginning are as precise as possible.
I don't watch her videos for the origami... I WATCH IT FOR THE MAGIC DOTTED LINES!
Yes, I used paper that's black on one side and red on the other.
Thank you very much for your instructional video. It is really excellent.
@Tigergirloxoxo113 I bought a video camera about 3 years ago. It's not great, and I'd buy a different one now, but it does the job. @bears7777777 It's a folding device for making very sharp creases.
good video Sara, thank you, your precision is awesome
amazing teaching!! Finally I learnt it! thank you so much!!
That is just amazing, I totally love the module =)
Thank you so much!
I have a playlist for different boxes and containers. You may want to check that out.
Omg there are magical lines at the creases she folds
@ROBLOXOrigami I added an annotation links to the video showing how to fold fifths. But as it doesn't seem to be obvious, here you go: watch?v=fYH47oPCwbI
@belenbernal498 I'm not sure I understand. Do you want this video to have spanish subtitles? Sorry, I don't know spanish, and someone would have to translate for me. Or are you talking about a different video?
Um trabalho muito bonito! Também está bem explicado. Vou tentar até conseguir. É um grande desafio. Obrigado pelo vídeo.

@MsDrugernaut Check out Jo Nakashima's video: watch?v=y2WmQY4lkgk
I love your videos and you have inspired me to do your fantastic origami p.s. I love the box
Great!!! Amazing box! Thanks for the upload.
@xclusivekz I usually post one instructional video a month, sometimes I manage to do two, and very rarely three. Next month is going to be tough, though, as I'm getting married and will be travelling. The videos will keep on coming, though. :)
@FanVanessaHudgens1 The stickiness will probably hinder you. Also, post-it notes are probably a bit too small, at least for a first attempt.
Perfection achieved
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
Congrats to him!
@iheartchloemybabysis It was a present, I only got two sheets of it. But I'm guessing you could find it online somewhere.
great video, really good to understand and fold along, managed to do it in the first try :)
@ying122 Great! Would you show us the result, e.g. in a video response? I saw you post videos yourself.
LOVE how u say centimeters!
every other box the pesron made it hard she just made it easy thank you ma'am
Thanks for the video. Got it on first attempt!
that little lock works wonders.
managed to get this working first go, but ripped the edge on the last step!!! /o\
fiddly indeed!
Did you skip the beginning? The model she was holding was made out of 15x15cm paper and the paper she used in the video was 25x25cm. You can use whatever size paper, just as long as it is square.
thank you so much i really love it i just made one :)
but please tell me which paper you used for your wedding's gifts?
i think it's more stable and much finer!
Awesome, great instructions! Would be a really romantic way to propose :) !!!
Now I just need an origami ring....
@LuckyPhew Can you share your result with us/me? I'm always interested in seeing the result of others following along to my videos.
@bears7777777 Are you sure you measured correctly? Always remember: measure twice, crease (or cut) once. :)
@lichterdenker Dankeschön, sie war wunderbar!
@SyndicateViper Toll, dass Du alles verstanden hast. Ich habe auch deutsche Untertitel gemacht. Das kann manchmal auch helfen. :)
I really enjoyed making this and storing some Origami Lucky stars in. Thanks for the Good tutorial :P
@ssyoki You can never be sure - unless you do give it a try. :)
such a beautiful origami box...just cant wait to make dis..:P
succeeded and completed! :D Thanks for the amazing tutorial!
