@Kaidoku123 honestly eraqus is at fault for just about everything that went wrong in kingdom hearts after the keyblade war
Aqua's never been in Atlantis and her name means water. No wonder her story isn't deep enough.
Right? Everyone knows you can't have meaningful character development without a smashing musical number!
Her character development is as *shallow* as a puddle
I don't know why. But this comment. Had me laghing hard its not that funny but thumbs up for that

Aqua's arc would have been much better if they actually described her relationship with Ven and Terra as a family. A) They basically are as they've been raised together. B) She treats them more like younger brothers than friends with the way she tries to mother them. Replace friendship with family in half the lines and suddenly both her desire to protect them and he perchance to act quite passive aggressive whenever she's around them would seem a lot more natural.
i think thats what they are. its obviously more of a family relationship than a friendship one. but isnt that the point? that their friendship is supposed to be so close that they are like family?
Agreed, I think this is how I overlooked the "unnatural friendship talk", in my mind they are more so family then anything. (their interactions make a lot more sense when seen this way, it makes their fights/drama less off-putting.)
I always viwed it as a family relationship instead of just friendship, and it does make a lot more sense.
@@cattya4406 Yeah it is how they are. My point is that the game doesn't actually acknowledge that and calls them friends the whole time. Which makes Aqua look a little loopy about friendship.
Agree. The first time I played bbs, the friendship theme isn't really match for wayfinder trio dynamic and it bugged me. From bodybuild you can tell that terra and aqua is older and ven is 1 on sora's age. Ven is definitely that innocent boy wanted to see the outside world, aqua is the most motherly figure in the game, and terra is passable to become older brother or even a dad. Then I read the novelization and some of japanese lines. They are more connotations that they indeed a family. Take a look at radiant garden scene where ven gives agua and terra the disney pass. Instead of bringing 2 grown ups, ven called them 'parents' in japanese.
My guessing is that they wanted to make wayfinder trio a friend group rather than family for english release. Which I prefer that they still keep up the family concept, like in japanese. Family makes much more sense, and the story much more amusing and heartbreaking. It is like watching family being shattered by evil guy
Thus makes aqua story much more heartbreaking. Is like a mother trying to bring the family back together
Tried something new to spice things up on my channel. What do you guys think?
And yeah I know I messed up at 1:49 There was supposed to be a buff guy next to me who would play my friend but I guess there was a rendering error and he got removed somehow.

Huh. I came in expecting jokes, but got an actual analysis. What a pleasant surprise; I hope you do more (and that I used that semicolon right.)
I wouldn’t say the analysis was that good.
@@Zelink108 lmao this analysis was actually answering my quetion, so i say its pretty fantastic
Omg the hand on my chest thing had me in tears. I love that about her but didn’t even realize she did that sooo much
eyezcosplay i always thought it was her trying to calm herself,
Summed up start of the game
Terra: “damn it, I tried so hard to be strong, there must be a way for me to be able to become a keyblade master”
Ventus: “my friend is suffering and I still don’t know my past. I need to help him and also stop this asshole in a black helmet”
Aqua: “yay I became a keyblade master. Wait where dafuq did those two idiots go. Guess I will go find them, I mean nothing bad is really gonna happen is it”.
Technically aqua was ordered to bring Ven back and keep an eye on Terra so technically only aqua was given a mission..... Terra ignored Master Eraqus and Ven got baited to go after Terra if Ven had stayed home aqua would have one job ....... Instead of two and when aqua gave Terra a warning he went ahead and be an idiot anyways oh yeah while ven sleeps soundly aqua had to suffer a decade in darkness (also mickey you had one job!!!!) That aside eraqus would not have to send aqua out if Terra and Ven dint disobey orders
THAT’S what’s inside Sora’s shoes.
His friends really are his power...
As much as I love Aqua... yeah, this is pretty true.
Although Aqua does come off as more like a mother towards Ven, while Terra seems like a big brother to him. They have a very different relationship than any of the other trios. It's interesting to think about, but some of those scenes, like the beginning one, are kinda just... poorly written.
And personally, I believe the thing Aqua struggles with the most is doubt. Each of the BBS trio has a specific flaw: Terra is trusting too easily, Aqua is doubting too easily, and Ven is being gullible (I actually think he's the one who acts like an idiot out of the three, which makes sense).
Meh, just my opinions.
LilliaLuna even if she acts like a mom think about it. Is it really necesarry? In all honesty their whole connection is really generic and uninspiring. I say generic because you see this triangle in a lot of shitty slice of life anime.
LilliaLuna Yeah I cant believe Just a pancake made a serious video for once
Because Aqua is like Bland after a while,Terra well he is not wrong for believing Xehanort that Eraqus is wrong but he also not right, and of course
Now i started to dislike Ventus because he is a little bi....i mean idiot poop face Xion > Ventus
Who?
LilliaLuna I still think it was great trio. I really liked their relationship and the emotional bond they portrayed. I personally don't think the the beginning scenes are poorly written. Just weird but they serve as a good way to show the close bond. I have to disagree heavily with just a pancake here. The beginning scene felt very relatable to me and I think her struggle was great. Her struggle to save her friends is one of my favorite struggles in the entire series because of how meaningful it felt to me personally
I mean I'd struggle to if my best friends were continuing to be a pair of total idiots instead of doing what they're told to do:
- stop using the darkness
- get back to homeworld
Definitely didn't expect an actual analysis, It was a great video and it went straight to the point. Really would like to see other videos like this in the future.

Take a shot every time a KH character puts there hand on there chest and closes there eyes
Damn I tried lost consciousness before finishing KH1.
My friend took shots everytime the Heavy says “METAL GIANT”. He still survived after 300 shots.
Yeah, why do they do that? Do the writers think that makes the characters look more emotional?
It's only funny when you think that the best depiction of friendship in the whole series is by three people with no heart and two of them are basically the same person
I think that was the whole point of her character. She was the only character deemed Master at the start of the game and went about her story as such. That moment in Radiant Garden, as pointed-out by Ven, revealed her flaw that she was more concerned about her mission from Eraqus than Terra's desperate struggle to prove himself or Ven's lonely desire to be with his friends.
I agree that the portrayal of friendship by the BBS trio at the beginning of the game was as a lot more subtle than the kind portrayed at the start of KHI, but that's also because of the vastly different circumstances between the two instances. The Terra/Ventus/Aqua scenario introduces us to three already established Keyblade students of two young adults and a freshman in what's practically a boarding school world, where as we meet the Sora/Riku/Kairi band as just three naive kids on a island looking for adventure. So, there definitely a distinct range of experience and maturity between the two groups.
This is why, in my opinion, Aqua's real struggle was, not so much entirely the friendship gig, as much as it her being trusted with the Master title too soon. Eraqus' misjudged Aqua's emotional maturity as a Mark of Mastery when it turned-out she still had a pessimistic habit of doubting others in times of crisis and then herself when stuck in darkness. This is made clear during the Phantom Aqua battle in 0.2 when it admits that "[she's] no Keyblade Master". 0.2 helped Aqua realize that and rebuilt her to where she can now bear that title more confidently.
KH3 is out and HAHA NOPE. Who needs character development when you got "Good morning Ven." Totally best buds.
Kh3 did her character dirty. Not gonna lie.
I thought it was "Simple and Clean?" Not dark and gritty and messy...
sadly one of the better moments of KH3 writing
I don't believe this
A meme channel just released the most inspired and thought provoking kingdom hearts video I've ever seen and after I thought the series had nothing to offer outside of vague plot direction and a bottomless timeline. I'm very impressed and pleasantly surprised
puts hand on chest
thinks of all the dank kingdom hearts memes Just a Pancake has created and closes eyes
Great video. It was serious, yet still held that Pancake-y feel.
10/10 would fall to DARKNESS again
Wow... I'm used to memes and joke videos on this channel but...
This was actually an excellent video (actually in the sense that it wasn't acting as a parody, but a well thought out analysis on Aqua's character). Yes, other people have brought up that Aqua's character in BBS is bad and that the parallel of friendship between Sora, Kairi, Riku is far superior to that of Terra, Aqua, and Ven, but Just a Pancake went further beyond and not only found examples in BBS that save Aqua's character but also about how 0.2 makes Aqua so relatable.
It's a good thing Aqua's name means "Subscribe to Just a Pancake" because a video like this makes me glad I subscribed.
The memes are good too, but this video is the icing on the p̶a̶n̶cake.
M0bileKeys I never knew people cared so much about both trios friendship.
Then again, I don't really care about the story, because it got convoluted after KH1, and it started to seem that they made up new plots at random to keep the series going. Everything from the very moment in which nobodies were introduced is just..ugh. (Not saying KH was a masterpiece; it wasn't, but it had a far more simple and engaging plot with your typical cliches rather than a convoluted story who tries so hard to get an emotion out of you and be original through whatever shit they come up with). It also doesn't helps that any newcomer to the series has to go start from KH 1 (still fun but you can see it's dated, even with Final Mix version) to AT LEAST have an original idea of what's going on.
I can't believe I'll say this, but I'd rather have Sora run around Disney World like an idiot instead of running around the edgy, melodramatic FF themes it tries to have. If they truly wanted to make a game that held on his own through good story, then they should have shoved KH aside.
Aqua is any better as a character than Kairi. I do not understand why you can hate it.
She's one of my favorite characters.
KH 1 is too childish and alas is deprived of really interesting characters except Riku.
In fact, it is in KH2 that all the fun begins.
It is thanks to the second part that everyone loves this franchise.
Nukara Rikova That's just you and few other people. Just check on the forums; most people agree that after Chain of Memories, the story gets too convoluted to be interesting.
People love KH2 because of its amazing gameplay, not the story. KH was childish indeed, but that's because it was targeted at children, not adults.
What ?! You probably have not read much of the forums. For the second part is just praised for the appearance of drama and a more adult story.
Many have been touched by the Roxas story and I do not know, it's necessary to be completely heartless to the point where Roxas says his last words about the end of the vacation did not cause you any feelings.
Tell me though about one moment in KH1 which would have reached the drama and the plot turns to 2 parts? Except for the moment where Sora beats himself by the Kiblade.
And tell me, what's so bad about a complicated plot?
Or do you like that you are being held for a five-year-old child and popping out the chewed information as Disney does (the benefit is that the new cartoons have become more intelligent and less trivial and predictable) or where the plot moves can be predicted for many years, as it was with the Tobi personality in Naruto.
Yes, and in fact an unnecessarily complicated plot was in DDD in other games if you just strain your brain, everything will be clear.
And then Aqua fell an accidently became a *Z-nort*
Aw nooooo, the sad part is it’s actually a well structured and well defined argument that I’m agreeing with. If I could subscribe again I would.
Just a Pancake, let me preface this by saying that I almost never subscribe to anyone. There are only a handful of channels on my subscription list, and you sir are on it. For so long, I've been forced to listen to everyone raving about how Aqua is the best character in the whole franchise. But now, finally, I've met someone who was perfectly able to describe exactly all the problems I've always had with her. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! I've thoroughly enjoyed all your videos so far, and don't mind you popping up on my notifications list (which normally is so annoying!) Just keep doing what your doing, because it's working for you!
Now, if you could just admit to yourself that Xion is a good character. Then we'd be, like, kindred spirits or something.
This video actually made sense for once and isn't just memes. Best video so far, jokes AND an actual opinion.
Was not expecting a serious video from you (though I did enjoy it), but then you talked about KH3 arriving next year and it was all fixed again.
I mean once Ventus wakes up, he’s gonna be Aqua’s true friend and probably be a way better person.
Aqua: “Ven, you were asleep for the past decade.”
Ven: “I believe you.”
Man, I miss the old times. Talking with my friends about stars, sunsets, and police...
Also, I didn't expect a so serious and true argument by the same pancake whose name spelled backwords is Just a Pancake, so I don't believe you, sorry.
Honestly Terra, Aqua and Ven have a strange type of friendship. It's not a social relationship, but a martial one. They aren't really friends, but comrades. They definitely care about each other, but it feels more like the relationships I've had with the people I fenced with in college. Or people who go to a dojo and practice a strict martial art. I think the competitive nature of what binds them together puts up these little barriers that prevent them from really letting their guards down around each other. Couple this with the fact that they don't really have anyone else to socialize with, then you get all those awkward moments between them when they try to reach each other on a personal level. Though every attempt is an honest one, they're literally a bunch of socially awkward teenagers trying to figure things out. It's fascinating, I think. Sora, Riku, and Kairi all seem much more socially adjusted with each other. Pettiness and jealousy drive Sora and Riku apart in KH1, but past that I think their relationships are pretty stable.
And then, kingdom hearts 3 came around and Aqua was STILL THE SAME. She is pretty though.
"When KH 3gets released next year" I laughed and laughed so hard!
As much as I like Aqua, this is legitimately the best I've seen anyone explain a critique of her character. And done, of course, in that inimitable Just a Pancake style.
Great video, I hope you do similar style videos about other characters as well.
Dayum, this’s actually a pretty deep and insightful analysis sometimes tbh. I guess even after playing BBS, the reason I still found Xion to be my favorite female KH character is that she actually struggles throughout the course of the game, whether it due to being shunned by Riku and Saïx or eventually learning that she’s nothing more than a hollow puppet meant to serve the organization’s goals, which’s to basically SUCC all of Sora’s (and to an extension Roxas) memories and power after the organization failed to capture him. And then her main struggle is in either confronting this and returning to Sora or remaining with her friends. And she ultimately ends up paying the price for it in her final clash with her close friend...
Aqua meanwhile felt the least interesting and fleshed out of the Keyblade trio imo. Terra struggled with the darkness in his heart and controlling it, basically making him Riku 2.0 (or 1.0, since he technically came first), whereas Ventus had his naïveté shattered by realizing his friendship wouldn’t last forever and learned what his true purpose is. Aqua just...well, more or less exists in order to help her friends, which makes her lack an identity of her own.
But then we fast forward to 0.2, where I felt *much* more invested in her character since here we struggle with fighting in the realm of darkness, and being there for so long has truly taken a toll on her mind and made her have doubts and insecurities in her actions. A part of her truly wants to give up and give into the darkness, and yet a small part still doesn’t want to lose hope, hence why she desperately chases the mirages of Terra and Ventus she sees. And in the end, even with presented to a chance to finally escape, she instead sacrifices her freedom in order to save Riku and Mickey, which’s truly selfless and noble.
So tl;dr, 0.2 definitely improved Aqua despite its super short length, and I’d say she more than deserved her happy ending once KH3 eventually rolled around.
This video is.... different....
I actually like it
4:34, I thought this was a serious video.

A good analysis! I really hope Aqua is better in KH3. She has so much potential as a character.
Aaaand they made her character even worse in KH3 again lmaooo
You must have played a different game than, becuase KH3 completed her arc. Aqua's problem has always been trying to take too much on by herself. She's still fighting the darkness in the deepest place even without a keyblade after all. She literally was stripped of everything, and when Sora reaches his hand out, she takes it, knowing that even with nothing she was never alone.(her good friend actually being inside Sora and really being the one reaching out to her)
they even took off the pressure of her being the only "master" during this crisis unlike before, and even showed that her time spent in the darkness still effects her(the scene with the huge swarm) and it wasn't just a one off thing that she overcame the second she was back in the light.
There's wasn't much more you could expect from the character, like at all. Roxas and Xion turned out to be much worse characters overall, they had minimal pay off in 3 for their arcs.
Seeing her ready to fight again at the end of 0.2 established her as someone who doesnt give up. 3 kinda does away with this by having her not do anything. The scene where she gave up was also out of character. What she shouldve done is, as the strongest wielder there, gone up to attack it like riku did. Seeing her get overpowered by the tornado would instill the sense of hopelessness that the scene was trying to present.

Mr. Just a Pancake, sir, could you do an analysis of the friendship and struggles of Roxas, Axel, and Xion next, please? I think the subject would make for a perfect video. I, no joke, believe Roxas is one of the most tragic and well-developed characters in fiction, and I'm sad every time to think about the sacrifices made by Axel and Xion.

As an Aqua fan, I can 100% agree with this analysis. At first I thought Aqua being all moody and depressed in 0.2 was a bit weird, but then I realized, "Oh yeah, she's been spending the last decade or so in the Kingdom Hearts equivalent of actual Hell with endless hordes of monsters constantly trying to eat her heart, I wouldn't exactly be all smiles and friendship at that point either". Frankly the fact that she's able to keep fighting the darkness at that point at all speaks volumes to why she is considered a Master. Hopefully when Kingdom Hearts 4 comes out 17 years from now we'll get to see Aqua's personality when she's not completely bogged down by worrying about her friends. At this point the gang's been reunited, there's no Terra falling to darkness or Ventus taking the most epic power nap in the universe to live rent free in her head anymore, so hopefully we'll get to see a side of Aqua that doesn't need "She cares about her friends, Terra and Ventus" added to the description.
