I got introduced to hockey when I stumbled on a NY radio sports station back in the late 60s that was broadcasting a Ranger game with Marv Albert doing the play by play. His amazing line "He shoots, he scores" just blew me away. Love at first sound.

Marv Albert was a great radio play-by-play announcer. I loved listening to him call the Rangers and Knicks games back in the 60s and 70s. And radio was important because all the home games were blacked out from over-the-air TV broadcasts then (unless you lived in Manhattan and had access to cable TV). But with Marv calling the games, you didn't miss much. It was almost as good as being at the game.

3:48 Hawks goalie Gary Smith thwarts a Ranger 2 on 1 and receives an appreciative hand from the New York crowd, as noted by Albert. A level of civility and appreciation from the Garden faithful, for a player on the visiting team, that I'm not sure you see much of anymore.

@@seveglider8406 Just in this video you can see him playing very well. I saw this MSG vault year ago and had forgotten that Smith started one of the games. Tony O missed very few playoff games
For someone who played for so many teams, Smith was a very underrated goalie. I once saw him almost score a goal against the Rangers. I think it was 70-71, a channel 9 game in Oakland against the Seals. Smith skated way up ice, very near, maybe past his blue line. It was late , Rangers behind by 1 had pulled the goalie. IIRC, Smith shot from where he was and it went a little wide of the goal. At that point, no goalie had ever scored a goal.
