  • The Battle of the Boyne, fought on July 1 (depending on what calendar you're using), 1690, was a significant event in Irish and British history, marking a pivotal moment in the Williamite War in Ireland. The conflict emerged from the broader context of the Glorious Revolution in 1688, which saw the overthrow of King James II of England and the ascension of William III (William of Orange) to the English throne.
This quick video tells the story of why this battle came about and it's importance in history.

reasonable account of the battle but one error. William did not lead the crossing at Rosnaree, it was the son of the Duke of Schomburg who led this. When finally brushing aside the holding Jacobite force he found his troops stuck on the wrong side of a steep and boggy valley facing the experienced French troops, which had been diverted to to face what James had thought was the main Williamite attack, and they then spent the rest of the battle just looking at each other.

Thanks for pointing this out; this was my error when writing out the script relative to the crossing near Rosnaree. Appreciate the feedback.

Interesting video, although the miss use of miss understanding of the word Catholic is the man disappointing fact in this video. The word Catholic means universal and does not and can not only mean the church of rome members. Any religionor faith made up of different people with different skins colours, different language, from different country's are ALL Catholic. Islam, Judaism, orthodox, church of rome and protestant are in fact Catholic.
