Ford Ranger 5.0 Conversion SWAP Done Right

  • Just a quick discussion of what I consider the "right" way to do a 5.0 swap into a Ford Ranger. I discuss the few issues I had with the project, mainly involving the EVAP emissions differences between an Explorer and Ranger.

    That’s a badass truck you got there. It’s not lifted too high, it doesn’t have crappy low pro street tires. It doesn’t have all of the god awful mall crawler look to it. Would love to have a truck like that myself. Great job 👍

    I appreciate this because you didnt drop a Ls in it like everyone and their mother does, as a chevy guy My nova will have a Ls because that's GM vehicle, my dream car is a 1968 dodge coronet I want put a hemi in it and you put a 5.0 in your ranger. Which is how it should be brand matching like that should be done more often, all you see is a Ls engine in damn near everything so I appreciate the time you put into this because you did do it right.... you didnt Ls swap and that's a great thing.

    I don't these negative comments. Great job on your build man, I know how much work goes into something like this. I swapped a 351w in a 87' ranger in high school. It was a lot of fun to build but more fun to drive.

      Most of the negatives are probably from people who dont even have the knowledge or ability to complete a project like this, or just Ford haters. Lol.

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone

      A "real" 5.0 is not a coyote engine. Its the 302 pushrod engine. Period...

  • @SBS_Auto

    Use a 96 5.0 explorer engine harness, and u dont have to worry about evap. U just hook the evap line to the charcoal cannister under the hood. U can relocate the charcoal cannister to behind the driver headlight.

    I agree with your statement the proper way to do a swap "right" is to do like the factory would. I did this to our brand new 1988 Chevrolet Caprice by swapping in an LS5 454. 13.25 @ 103 mph in the quarter and it would tow anything. Put 200,000 miles on it before it was sold in 2006. Get this...it was my wife's daily driver!

      I have an 01 Ranger (2.5L Lima engine) that I bought super cheap (body/trans/wheels/brakes EXCELLENT) when he drove through a big puddle, sucked in H20 and hydro-locked a con rod through the block. Not pretty.
      Looking into it, a 2.3 Turbo Coupe motor would be super easy, and provide almost as much power as a V8 swap while still giving you some efficiency.

      All that is plug and play, motor mounts are rickrangers swap plates and 4.0 rubber mounts, stock ranger driveshaft, stock u-joints, wiring is plug and play. Use the ranger cab harness, use the explorer engine harness. You dont even need to do any of the evap crap.

    tap a T or cut a sleeve in to the filler hose of the tank and bam, your sensor is as close to source pressure as basically being inside the tank but with no fab and only slight modification to stock. Then just run your wiring. next best thing is as you mentioned to tie into the vent line near the vapor cannister. Killer build and keep up the good work !

    Done several of those swaps, right. Two Ford engineers were at Two Rivers ford when I went to get a part for it. They looked at it and said it was the cleanest swap they had ever seen. You're right, doing it right is not that hard just time consuming. I had one in Sport Truck magazine, July 1996. Check it out. Thinking seriously about dropping a 3.5TT in a Ranger. THAT would be awesome. You did a good job.

    I did the same thing with the 1st engine. All Ford other than the headers, shifter and fan.

      As if ford never fucks up. Mustang II, pinto, exploding crown vics, not putting a badass V8 in everything, etc. So don't act like ford is the end all, be all god of things automotive. They're just as bad as dodge and chevy in some regards.

    • @myles3100

      brussell639 Pinto's only exploded if they weren't fixed. I had a 2.0 a great ford single over head cam motor. Looked stocked, ported the head the stock exhaust manifold, crammed it and re jetted that carb. Had my trans man rebuild me a C4, put an 8 inch with 4.11's thing would run 14.00 wink all day long. Take money from V8 Mustangs & Camaros at the track or on the street. So don't be bad mouth those things that go Bomb in the night LMBO. 😉

    You could also just use an OLDER 5.0 from a 1987-93 Mustang and not have a concern about that stuff.
    I have a 4X4 myself, but doing a 2wd swap isn't the wrong thing and u kinda made it sound like only a "AWD" is correct. My old AWD Explorer 4.6L was excellent, thus, no swap needed. Ford could've made millions more by offering a V8 Ranger.
    Looks good, but it could be washed! I like the wiring NOT looking like a rate nest! Overall, it reminded me of my brothers last 5L Ranger, very neatly done. He also replaced his entire gauge pod with a custom built version he built to resemble the Mustang Cobra (kinda like urs) and NOBODY thought Ford didn't build it. That's good work! That was completed in 2002 as I recall and was a 90 with an 88 5L. KUDOS to u for reminding me of the best "simple swao" I've seen done at home.

    I have no use for a 4 wheel drive truck, give me two wheel drive and a 5 speed. Other than that it does look great, good job.

    It’s a nice Truck. I would put some new headlights on it so it looks sharp. Put a explore fuel tank or custom fuel tank with a place for the sensor?..

    I did a square body years ago. Whe had to run a gt40 intake plenum on backwards. Asin tb toward fire wall. This was to keep the hvac box in tact. Had ac was 4x4 fit reasonable

      tichendorf Oh please, that engine is ancient and outdated by decades, the fact that these tjings are still on the road today is just a testament to how good Fords are. You cant tell me when you saw the title of this video that you werent hoping it was a Coyote.

    • @theonlynontrollhere
      @theonlynontrollhere 6 років тому +1

      Gage Garofalo why in the name of all that is unholy, would you put a coyote in an unbalanced, sketchy ass mid 90s mini truck? Of course the answer is why not, but his idea for the engine swap is for it to be driveable

    Pretty tempted to do a 5.0 swap on my 91 but I can get a 5.3 for $200 so I'm also leaning a bit more towards that.

    I stumbled across this looking for inspiration because I plan to put a V8 in my 2009 single cab Ford ranger. Just because it will be awesome. I'm tired of being passed my minivans on the freeway.

    • @jacquespoirier9071
      @jacquespoirier9071 6 років тому +3

      probably but my point is that I don't understand why destroy your own work, there so many ways to enjoy your vehicule without working to destroy it.
      doing burnouts is extremely rough on the mechanics and ruin a set of tires in much less time that the time you have to work to pay them.
      other thing, the smoke produced by burning tires is not the best for the health and why run cars with antipollution when you scrap all the gain in fact, the tire smoke is mostly unburned hydrocarbons as burning rubber releases black carbon smoke not white bluish smoke.

    That is weird that you cannot shut the EVAP system off completely on that particular computer setup. On a lot of the tunes we do with Ford we can shut them all off, but I have never done an Explorer, Mountaineer system. That sucks. Also if it is reading that code how does the check engine light not set? Just wondering for my own personal knowledge.
    Otherwise that is a beautiful build. I know I can't see everything just over the computer, but it looks great from what I can see. Nice work my friend, and I'm sure you will get that one issue ironed out if you were able to do everything else. One minor detail left, no big deal. Good luck and thank you for sharing with us
