Liturgy was so way ahead of its time (honestly still is) and the amount of hate they received has been unwarranted. Anther band imo that has been in a similar scale but still quite undervalued is Child Abuse. I think Liturgy played with them years ago.

@@GnawedPupils Yeah talk about an underground band… I discovered them, hell 10+ years ago at a record store. Might have been tower records or something like that. It was on one of those computers that you could listen to samples of new music and artists. I saw the name and HAD to see what it was about. The song that played was “Wrong Hole” and with a name like Child Abuse, along with the crazy song name, and off putting album cover, I didn’t know what I was up against. I completely got obsessed with their sound and have listened to them since. I’m into all types of dissonant, abstract music like that, so it was right up my alley.

I felt like I was so strong, and my strength was just bursting out of me, I felt like I could lead a legion, I had this strong imagination of leading this huge crowd of people. I was holding my arms out in the middle of my room, the track blasting, Jesus like in the middle of my room, and I was shaking.
It was at that moment, totally coincidentally, that my ex messaged me calling me an asshole. I texted her that I'm a God. I meant it, too.
We're alright now, me and her, i can't remember if i ever explained that. I still haven't gone back to that album, I think I barely got past the second track. It was fucking nuts.

It seems almost criminal that Yellow Eyes - Rare Field Ceiling eluded review on this channel. The album features dense, impressionistic walls of sound which are somehow simultaneously discordant and harmonious. The songwriting is progressive and technical in a way that rewards many repeat listens without obstructing the experience. Each track finds its way through thick, winding chord progressions to memorable moments that turn into relentless earworms despite their unorthodox nature. The songs occasionally devolve into formless and meditative places which propel the sonic narrative in a way that feels both earned and essential. There's a completeness to the vision of Rare Field Ceiling which brings new, distinct elements to the genre of black metal. Yet, it maintains a closeness to its roots in a way that similarly compelling acts like Krallice and Liturgy have eschewed in favor of their own particular brands of progress. Impressively, Yellow Eyes are able to achieve this fidelity to the genre without feeling beholden to it. For someone whose primary interest in metal appears to be for those bands who are creating artistically compelling work, it surprises me that this one has either flown under your radar or not come across as meritorious of review.
