Pod 2 Review (from last year): • Eight Sleep Pod 2 Cove...
^ I made my Pod 2 review private because it has a lot of the same content as this Pod 3 review. The link is here for transparency, but it's probably not worth watching!
    Summary:
I was initially hesitant to try Eight Sleep due to their annoying fake discounts and email marketing tactics. The lack of real reviews on the internet was concerning too. However, I eventually decided to purchase the Pod 2 Cover and loved it. After sleeping on it for eight months, I bought the Pod 3 Cover because my previous video of the Pod 2 had been well received.
After more than a year of using an Eight Sleep cover, sleeping on a non-cooled mattress is now something that I don’t look forward to. However, I recognize that it's a luxury purchase and not for everyone, as it's quite expensive and there are concerns about its longevity. Overall, I think it's a risk worth taking for those who are often uncomfortable at night or have different temperature preferences than their partner.

    12:25 Who is this for?
    12:56 Disclosure
    Disclosure:
When I made my Pod 2 review, I had no relationship with Eight Sleep. I added the universal “refer a friend” link (from inside the Eight Sleep app) to the description. Eventually, Eight Sleep reached out because they liked my review and wanted me to join their official affiliate program.
I joined their program under two conditions:
    - I won’t change or tweak content to their liking.
    - I won’t accept free products and will continue to buy all products my videos.
If you enjoyed this video, I’d appreciate it if you used one of my links. By doing so, if you buy an Eight Sleep Pod Cover, you’ll save $200, and I’ll earn a commission from Eight Sleep. It’s a win-win. But to be upfront, there’s nothing special with my discount specifically-it can be found from someone else with a quick Google search. I won’t be offended if you don’t use it, but I will appreciate it if you do.

Was considering it but putting 90% of features behind a paywall is a disgusting move that makes me not want to support such a company.
Just going to wait a year or 2 and the prices will likely drop and quality/reliability increase due to competition. Early adopter items are rarely worth due to abnormally large prices where the company is trying to cash in before other players enter the market and force their margins down.
    Great review by the way!

  • @power_moves

This video is just two months old, but unfortunately, Eight Sleep recently put the majority of its features behind the paywall. The Pro ($180/year) subscription is mandatory for the first year of ownership, which works out to an additional $900, assuming five years of ownership.
The good news? You can cancel the subscription after the first year. The bad news? You'll only get one feature: manual temperature control. Sleep and health tracking metrics, along with the vibration alarm, and the scheduled heating and cooling are all disabled.
Can you get by without a subscription? Maybe! But remembering to turn on the Pod each night before bedtime, and to turn it off in the morning, might be challenging. Plus, you’ll miss out on the alarm and sleep tracking too.
Subscriptions for fitness gear aren’t new, but I still hate this move! I’d rather pay more upfront for something and truly own it. I currently pay $44/month for the privilege to ride my Peloton, but it's the primary reason why I no longer own an Oura Ring or Whoop. That being said, I’d rather see Eight Sleep do this to survive if the alternative is disappearing.
I’m grandfathered in and have the Eight Sleep free for life, but if I were a first-time buyer again, I’d likely still buy the Pod 3 and reluctantly subscribe to the Pro plan ($180/year) to get the sleep tracking.
However, I think the subscription will rightfully dissuade a lot of people from pulling the trigger.

Yeah, that's a pretty insane cost of ownership. Not only do you have to fork over $2100 for just the cover and the pump, you also need to give them $120/year to use what you already paid out the ass for. If the company goes under and/or the app is taken down, you now have a $2100 brick.

But suddenly rolling a bunch of standard features behind a paywall for an already premium product just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As much as I'd love to try it out, I can't support a company that makes moves like that. Either Eight Sleep feels like they can squeeze more cash out of potential buyers, or they're hemorrhaging money themselves and are scrambling to stay afloat. If the manual temperature control is only 1 set temperature throughout the night then it's bad news and definitely will affect your sleep. I have been using the Oura ring for 4 years along with the Chilipad Ooler for 3 years and I know you'll need different temperature settings throughout the night.
In our first stage of deep sleep (within the first 3-4 hours) most people would sleep better at a colder temperature. But in the 2nd half cycle (3-4 hours before we wake up) we're usually in REM sleep stage. In this stage, there is rapid eye movement and more vivid dreaming. Our body is more sensitive to light, noise, and temperature...all these things are even more sensitive the older you are (that's why a lot of people wake up at 3 - 4am).
The ideal temperature for REM phase is usually recommended to be a few degrees close to ambient room temperature. Our body temp will naturally increase during that time to cut off melatonin production for us to wake up gradually. Thanks for sharing such an honest review!

    • @power_moves
      @power_moves  8 місяців тому

Our body's should be able to self-regulate our own temperature with a static temp of the bed, no? Humans have for more than 100,000 years. You may be right, and Eight Sleep would agree with you, but it seems like pseudo-science to me to justify extra features. I'm a simple man, I just like a cool bed.

I'm not 100%, but I'd lean towards no. As I'm sure you've seen, the minimum spec requirement is 10". My worry would be that the encasement cover zipper would be under your bed. Watch this (ua-cam.com/video/6PbQQnrGI30/v-deo.html) at around the 20 second mark.

If anything, it's made it worse due to changing the comfort of my mattress. Still waiting for them to get back to me on returning the device. They answered once, but now 3 days with no response.
I think for people who genuinely like a cold or hot bed, this is a very well made product. For those who like a neutral bed, a quality mattress that sleeps neutral is a better option.
Ironically, a lot of the "hot" mattress is due to the use of memory foam in many beds. Sleep on Latex or an old school inner coil mattress and you will find that heat is not really much of an issue for most.

Tremendous review (better than any other and I’ve tried to view them all). I’ve had my Pod 3 for a month. When I first got it, the Sleep Hub would not connect with my wi-fi. After an hour on the phone with Tech Support they still couldn’t resolve it so they sent a new Hub with a return label for the old Hub. The new one worked the first time.
I’ve had an Oura ring for a year and a sleep ring called RingConn (similar to Oura but no subscription fee). My main concern at the moment is with Deep Sleep. With Oura it has been really low (as little as 2 minutes after 8 hours of sleep!). With the Pod 3 I have seen the following significant improvement in my sleep: much higher Deep Sleep (last night, for example, for the first time in a year, I had more Deep Sleep than REM); far less movement during sleep; more consistent breathing and definitely higher HRV. The Pro Subscription is a downer but I’ll re-evaluate next year. Overall, I couldn’t be happier (but I should disclose I saved a thousand dollars and it had nothing to do with a review or anything like that).

Many startups are getting crushed due to economical landscape.
The thing that really sucks is that Eight Sleep anchored people's minds with a $2k price, so now anything more seems outrageous.

Wait, it’s not optional anyone? You’re the second person to say something.

@@power_moves It's not optional anymore. You HAVE to buy a 1 year membership ($180) to purchase the hardware. They automatically add it to your cart and you can't remove it. I asked customer service if there is any way to purchase without the membership; they said no, but I can cancel after ONE YEAR and continue with the regular membership then. Crazy.

Imagine buy a thing that its expensive as hell an then you have to pay a subscription to use the features of your device, your review is great but is really discouraging seeng this greedy move, doesn't make any sense to me

i think this needs a lifetime warranty for a purchase from any normal person... it doesn't seem like they have much confidence in their own product.. the mouse i'm using right now has a longer warranty.... also what if they go out of business? what if they shut down the servers for their app? is there any way to control the unit manually at all? i really need something like this due to my living situation but there's just too many caveats...

The $24/month subscription gets you a lifetime warranty, but like you mentioned, that doesn't do much good if they go out of business. There are definitely way more downsides to the Pod than upsides, but funny enough, for me, Eight Sleep nails the cool mattress part so well that the downsides are worth living with.

I'm with you! Eight Sleep sells a "Carbon Air Pillow," but it's a very overpriced and mediocre pillow that definitely doesn't stay cool like the bed does.

Didn't cover how noisy the pump is, which is the single biggest question i would have about this product.

it looks like Chili Sleep/Sleep Me is going out of business so this is the only other viable option. Bed jet seems like a great idea but probably poor in execution. idk. i haven’t looked too much into that. but for someone who gets overheated fast, gotta bite the bullet on an 8 sleep

Just turn the dial down to cool the bed when you feel like that. The autopilot feature might help you do it automatically too.

To finniky and fussy with to many negative points to be truly worth the massive price... Who wants a subscription who wants a humming box by the bed... I go to sleep to get away from all this kind of thing.... Hydrogen peroxide in my bed great idea...... Needs a bit more work and no subscription.... Good idea but to soon to adopt it

How the hell can your girl complain about being too cold? Just use more sheets and pillows and wear a nightie.
On the other side, there is nothing you can do to reduce heat except using AC. (or obviously this 2500 usd 8 sleep badboy, to wich I really hope your girl gave you at least a little bit of money)

Interviewed with 8 Sleep was more than qualified for the job even though it was low-paying. I'm a certified clinical sleep educator. Made it through 9 interviews. Entire company was essentially CEO worship and as soon as I met with the CEI was clear he was not interested in me because of my weight. He kept stressing it was a fitness company and that someone would need to be a "representative" of that. Definitely would not recommend if you choose to spend your money with reputable people.
