Our 2011 Nissan Rogue rogue randomly started having major power loss and heavy vibration. It started without warning one day.
Our 2012 Ford Escape had a similar problem earlier this year. Our assumption was that the car needed a tune up with new spark plugs and ignition coils.
This video shows the initial symptoms of an ignition system issue in a car followed by a typical solution for fixing the problem. Symptoms include power loss, random cylinder misfire, vibration, engine light on, and a P0300 ODBII engine code. The problem is common in aging cars where the spark plugs and coil packs haven’t been replaced in a long time. We show how we pulled and replaced the ignition coil/coil packs and the spark plugs to solve the problem. We were lucky since this issue can also be caused by a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter, dirty throttle body, vacuum line cracks, and some other less common problems that can be more difficult to track down. If you are having this issue you can verify the air filter is clear and then replace the spark plugs to start. That could clear the issue. However, since coil packs are like $10 a pop on Amazon and plugs are like $5, and time is money, you may just want to consider doing the air filter, coils, and spark plugs as a first step!
Sorry about the camera movement... it was a very windy day when we did this job.

Just used this video to diagnose and fix my parent's 2016 Rogue with the same p0300 code. Worked like a charm. Not sure which cylinder it was but for 60 bucks got four coil packs and plugs from Amazon. Thanks!

Great to hear. Just be sure the Rogue runs smooth. I found that some of the cheaper coils may not run as good as OEM. That was the case on our Ford Escape, not our Rogue.

P050A code on my KIA Soul 2016 . Cold start . It was the Sparkplugs. 35,000 miles . Changed the plugs and the problem was solved .

Wow. 35k on plugs is pretty low. Did you notice anything wrong with them when you pulled them out?

I have a 2012 Quest with 172000km on it. I’ve gotten the P0300 (generic misfire), P0021 (crankshaft position) and P0455 (EVAP) codes. Yes plugs and coils are way overdue, but I’m not just going to throw $500 in parts and $300 in labour at changing those parts without being sure that solves the problem. Plugs and coils can be done another time, when it’s warmer outside and I can dedicate time on a weekend to doing them myself.

Plugs and coils are relatively simple to change. And you can get aftermarket ones for under $100.
Sounds like you got a couple more problems than that, so what’s your plan?

So after a bunch of back and forth troubleshooting, it turned out that alternator needed to be changed. Unfortunately, this really only came to light after I had the solenoid replaced and I replaced the battery (thank you Costco warranty!!). After the new battery died about 30 kms after being replaced, we had the alternator changed.
Right now, I continue to live with the EVAP codes, because that it just too much of a biatch to properly fix for not much gain at this point. I am hoping to have this vehicle last another two or three years, so if the EVAP codes give me trouble, I’ll have them looked after, but for now just keeping it mechanically sound and running. With proper fluid changes is the plan.

Also, changing coils on the back cylinders of this van are not within my skill set and even the mechanic isn’t looking forward to doing it. The front coils are well within my abilities and capabilities.

So did you replace the coil? 9 years old, I’d just swap them all out. Can get a full set for $50 these days.

That’s it throw parts at it don’t troubleshoot the problem 300 code as a generic, random misfire. You don’t know what cylinder is missing parts guys. Love you because you just buy parts and use your eight ball and throw at it. Diagnose the problem fix it right

Agreed! Glad we can entertain you. But in reality it’s a trade of time and energy vs the cost of most probable part issues. Add to that the age of the parts being replaced.

P0300 code. Throws coils at it. Why wouldn't you diag it?

160000 miles on the coils and getting a misfire and code. For $50 in coils and them being a very likely source of the problem based on experience, I rather not spend time on it if I don’t have to.
