The issue with the next Historical game has also drawn the ire of SEGA who are apparently much more cutthroat now with CA, whereas before they were very passive. This is for a few reasons, and is happening with companies like Sony and Tencent who are getting more involved with their western studios, because the Yen is massively suffering right now, and they need to cut costs. You're correct that Mike Simpson is retiring, he sent an email about it early in the year and its taken effect just before Hyenas announcement. Anyone who works on TW will tell you he hasn't really been involved with Total War creatively since Shogun 2. Rob B was removed of leadership, but in the email about that to the studio, there was mention he may be taking a role at SEGA. Honestly, if I were part of that 42% of the company getting cut over mistakes and hubris by the higher ups, I'd get together with my "former" colleagues and immediately start brainstorming for Middle Ages: Absolute Combat (working title)
How many of these people are actually from Shogun 2 or earlier though? No point in a spiritual successor if they're still participants of the decline era of CA.
Yes, but they might not be interested in medieval combat at all. Modern game development is just an industry where many people are just working on doing textures or animations or whatever, and they don't really have any involvement with what the end result will be.
@@Tom_Quixote You are right, but there might be some older people higher in the company who still care about specific products who could leverage personal respectful relations to some of the people going out to start something new. It's not worth betting money on it though.

Corporations have the same issue as governments, no PERSONAL stake. As I saw a guy put it, executives don't OWN the company, they are temporary managers, so they don't act in the interest of the company because the company isn't their PERSONAL stake. When there is an OWNER like Larian for example, the games being good and the longevity of the company is a personal importance.
yes exactly. the majority of people who work for a corpo don't care whatever the corpo is suppose to do. this is why you see this so often. the vast majority of it's members are 9-5ers who screw around on their phones/social media all day, management included.
I kinda disagree. What we see is people being fired or disgruntled for not "using modern tools". And how those people talk about management and "the old geezers". All who made statements about how long they were in CA said about a decade. Sooo... To put it bluntly, they haven't worked on anything good (Warhammer relies purely on the brand), the first result they could have worked on was Rome 2 Total war, which was an insult. And they are those people who CA brought in in massive hiring sprees. I see young people jumping into CA for a cushioned job, hoping that all the work would be done by the seniors. And than they realize that those "geezers" have no plan themselfes, those who had already left the ship a looong time ago. Instead of a chushioned ride they have to row endlessly and stop the water from leaking into the ship constantly. I do not see any people who would be able to remake such a detailed game as Shogun or Medieval Total War, nor make new progress into Rome, nor refine it in something like Medieval 2. I see a company 800 people strong whos best achievement to fix anything is to simply cut it. No free armies, no population control, single City empires in Warhammer, Doomstacks and Single entity Units, forced army composition... everything to not fix ANY problems.
@@iwankazlow2268 yea, I feel CA's modern games have worse mechanic/ gimmick than older games. If it's not for Warhammer fans, TW probably already down long time ago
I used to work for CA in the console team and left after Halo Wars 2 just before Hyenas development started. I think on one of the company meetings the head of CA said they had enough money to buy themselves back from Sega. I don't know the legal nuances but you should understand that there was plenty of independence for CA. Sega was more like a minority investor when it comes to decision making. Or this was my impression.
So like, Sega probably don't really know what's going on with Hyena, then found out recently and decided to pull the plug. Then CA get panic, and all shits go down.
Ok. From what I see is, while Sega can't intervene in CA internal development, they still can decide how the game being launched. I guess Sega choose to cutloss after calculating the numbers, and seeing how other live service games perform.
That last part is so sad, brand team saying early to cancel the game before the money gets spent. Money gets spent, game gets cancelled, the people who warned this would happen are the ones who pay for it. The people who pushed for this game to happen should resign
The story about the brand managers trying to get the CPO to change course, then being made redundant now that the shit hit the fan just boils my blood. A very similar thing happened to me in the automotive industry. I despise the corporate structure of zero accountability of large companies.

I've been in the industry for almost a decade now, and following this tragicomedy was very enlightening. I've kinda got used to reading on big studios making tremendous fuckups and generally being a scum of the earth (Blizzard, EA, Bethesda), but this story hits different for some reason. Maybe because it's much lesser scope of the studio? Unsure. Regardless, thank you for bringing this story to our attention. And have a wonderful day!
16:09 I was certain the decline of TW was because the original devs from the RTW and TWM2 moved on. Sounds like they or their friends got promoted and they just grew fat on TW's reputation from the 00s. That makes the decline even worse!
I feel bad for the staff that had to work for Hyenas. They probably did all they could, with the actual Hyenas pulling the strings of the studios bashing them and crushing their hours.
Yeah, the dipshit stuffed suits are to blame, not the staff trying to make the game working under that clownshow. A chatbot probably could do a better job spitting out both future plans and handling community outreach than what we've seen from the actual humans at the helm.
Thanks for continuing to cover this stuff. Awesome to be able to inform people as of what’s actually going on before they go blow their money on this company.
In Holland, we have aa term for this situation where higher ups keep each other out of the wind. It called the job carousel. Once you get on it, everyone else keeps you on, because theyre all scared to fall off. Its one of the main reasons I prefer working for smaller IT companies.
Most gaming companies problem is the higher, parent company meddling in their business ex: deep silver convinced volition to make saints row about friendship instead of gang warfare like the old classics. CA's problem seems to be the exact opposite. The top guys are not coming in and beating them enough. Which i find ironic.
@GeraltofRivia22 true, the harder you pander the more people you insult. Esg also hurts bottom line because instead of hiring the best you hire based off skin and sex. The only people who will find this comment "problematic" are the people who only have their job because whatever esg requirement they used to get their job.
@MK_ULTRA420 can't shame people in today's society man. It's impossible. We got dudes cutting their peens off and dry freezing them for key chains. I do see what your saying though. Only people buying esg products are esg products.
So many creative companies that used to be top dog are going down the toilet. EA, Disney, 343i/Halo, CA. All they need to do is let creatives be creative and the money will flow!
I don't know. They keep saying how CA needs new blood and the old guys should leave, but that thing happened with Blizzard and Bioware and look at their games now. They don't need new people, especially not people with ideologies, they need better philosophy.
The fact that they tried to sell a game as a Live-service and think that as long as they don't use the word "Live Service" pretty much spells out how much surface level thinking was going on there. The gaming industry is now beginning to realise that they can't surf on every wave.
At this point, Sega need to guy the crap out of the top leading staff, not just Rob but everyone at the top, and at this point even if they must replace them with their own people, those people would likely understand what would be needed, what would be wanted, and what to do in scenarios requiring a certain touch where these Executives clearly dont care, dont want anything, dont need anything, and dont want to change anything for certain scenarios.
It made so much sense after watching this. I often compared CA with Paradox, Paradox strategy games often innovates, Victoria 3 is a flawed game, yet they willing to try something new with the war system. They are extremely open about modding as well. But then there's CA, I mod both TW and HOI4, and I can't stress enough how the official modding tools for TW are so dated, crashes and error are very common. But you can literally mod Paradox games with a fucking Notepad!
I am not a fan of Tencent games but I have to say, games coming from Tencent is way better than Hyenas. So, I highly doubt the executives over at Tencent would be impress by Hyenas esp how Troy probably also flopped on Epic platform.
Hey Vol, this somewhat off-topic, but I was just enjoying your impossible battles (You need to make a playlist out of this) and began watching your hattori playthrough. Enjoying all of this, but do you have any plans on making anything new?
Here’s something I don’t think most people understand: you know how you show up to work and do as little work as possible to avoid being fired or ‘work from home’ with a mouse jiggler? The guys at the top are doing the exact same thing.
I loved Halo Wars 2! Me and my mate got top 10 in Europe 2 Vs 2s. Not quite as hardcore as StarCraft but more depth than Command and Conquer from a tactical perspective.
Why tf don't they just make the games people are asking for. A medieval 3 or Rome 3 or shogun 3 would sell insanely well. Why do these fkin companies keep shooting themselves in the foot? Not every game can be fortnite or apex legends.
Trying to flog off Hyenas is hilarious 😂 gotta try and clawback some of that colossal loss of capital. At this point I can imagine SEGA looking at CA like their buddy that just got bit by a zombie and thinking they'll have to put them down before their infection poses a threat I.E lets sell these chumps.
I have worked on several projects (that ultimately failed) that a higher up thought was a good idea, and all 80+ staff working on the project knew was a bad idea, and told him so if they were particularly bold. Some people in high positions believe in themselves more than a room full of experts. It is a very common human condition and I have seen it in many different spaces.
I saw a Bellular News video today that stated that Sega make most of their money from gambling, with CA effectively costing them money. Sega would rather focus on their Pachinko machines instead of games. Because gambling makes stupid money. Video games, less so.
2:20 the way sooo many industries somehow thought that the covid money would last forever really confirms the 'short sighted business jerks' stereotype. still works out for us on the whole, lot of cheap nerd stuff around now as they try to sell off massive inventories of like..model paint and gaming chairs they're stuck with. lol.
The part where the dev explains that they feedback was ignored is just full circle of the tw community isn't it? CA got feedback over a decade externally and ignored everything as well.
I wish that CA was old school. If they kept the depth and hardcore nature of medieval 1 through 2. I'd still be happy. The problem is that they've become arcade games and abandoned everything that makes a strategy/tactics game like what made them famous.
The fact CA under 343i were more focused is hilarious to me, Halo Wars 2 was a really good game as well and actually redirected the whole story of Halo altogether

He's brilliant though, but I think due to SEGA he never got involved seriously with TW again. Rob B was removed of leadership, but in the email about that to the studio, there was mention he may be taking a role at SEGA. From my understanding, about 10% of TW teams are being let go, mostly in the ancillary areas like marketing, live ops and QA. Marketing has been gutted.
@@Volound
wow some interesting things there, and some things i can dig in deeper with to see what else i can find.
the rob role at SEGA sounds extremely fishy though. ill be checking that and id advise you maybe to do the same, im assuming you havent seen that email and someone just offhandedly remarked along those lines? either way it sounds off based on what ive seen and heard. its possible i just seriously doubt it and have reasons to. we will see.
thanks anyway, i just care about reporting whats apparently true.
Honestly, if I were part of that 42% of the company getting cut over mistakes and hubris by the higher ups, I'd get together with my "former" colleagues and immediately start brainstorming for Middle Ages: Absolute Combat (working title)
Indeed, a company of 20 or 30 can do amazing things, and luckily they would have to start from scratch as the code is CA property.
The issue is not having the 20-30 talented people. It s to have the money to sustain these 30 peoples for one to two years (let s be honest proably 3 if they need to build a engine)
dude. you were all over this before it blew up. perfect reading between the lines to be ahead of the news...to the degree you ARE the news. well done! takes an enviable level of insight to get where you've gotten.
Not just insight but experience interacting with CA over many years
You could substitute CA for Bungie and it would all make sense. Plus, substitute Sony for Sega. lol
Omg Volound, CA will soon be hiring hitmen to take you out.

CA trying to make an ‘Escape from Tarkov’/Fortnight hybrid is hilarious.
About as far outside of their wheelhouse as one could be.
I thought the same upon hearing it
Their description of Hyena sounds a lot like Bungie's new Marathon reboot.
its so random i still don't know how they even came up with the idea.
the irony of having footage of intense high micro managment done right while talking about CA's Mismanagement.
@@iwankazlow2268 wow that's a lotta words too bad i'm not reading em. 😎

What I was trying to say is that Sega most probably can't sack CA's tops. It's not that they don't want to. They just can't do it legally I think.
@@alexandermedvedev8018So total war is in the hands of greedy corporate idiots.
Ok. From what I see is, while Sega can't intervene in CA internal development, they still can decide how the game being launched. I guess Sega choose to cutloss after calculating the numbers, and seeing how other live service games perform.
I'd bet that Sega wishes that CA bought them out.
That last part is so sad, brand team saying early to cancel the game before the money gets spent. Money gets spent, game gets cancelled, the people who warned this would happen are the ones who pay for it. The people who pushed for this game to happen should resign
Brand team were hanging out at Nottingham too much; Games Workshop's toxic middle management yuppies had melted their brains.
Hyenas sounds like one of those fake games they have as a plot device in a movie or TV show
Might as well have named it Battlenite or Fortgrounds or something, lol.
The story about the brand managers trying to get the CPO to change course, then being made redundant now that the shit hit the fan just boils my blood. A very similar thing happened to me in the automotive industry. I despise the corporate structure of zero accountability of large companies.
Everytime a company approaches tencent, the Chinese companies reaction must always be "You must surely be desperate to ask for my help" lmao

It's fascinating how short sighted corpos can be.
As I see it, SEGA corporates stepped in and tried to put a stop at the mismanagement, or at least sent warnings to CA. I dont think the disaster is at corporate level, it seems they gave CA a lot of freedom...
One could Wonder how they even became big in The First place.

As someone in the industry its almost always executives and they also never suffer any reprecussions
The more leaks the more all of this makes sense. Its baffling how people can be this incompetent, I find hard to beleive despite it happening in front of my eyes. Its such a ridiculous situation that it almost looks like the evil plot from a moustache twirling evil cartoon villain. If I did not know any better I would say it was intentional. Its like jumping into a lake and get surprised that you are now surrounded by water. The incompetence is just incredible.
Things that are factually correct can still be unfathomably idiotic sadly
I’m so glad I didn’t get the job applied for at CA earlier this year, I got through to the final rounds of interviews and met a lot of people who were mostly wonderful but I’m really glad I didn’t uproot my life where I am to move to Horsham to be in the firing line now.
Because they already had a money making formula with Warhammer 2 and all the DLCs - and messed up so heavily for nothing
Nice one SEGA, we don't get a new Jet Set Radio game but you'll blow 100M on this.
Couldn't have happened to a better company.
16:09 I was certain the decline of TW was because the original devs from the RTW and TWM2 moved on. Sounds like they or their friends got promoted and they just grew fat on TW's reputation from the 00s. That makes the decline even worse!
All of them moved on except Mike Simpson. The devs that made Medieval 2 are not even in gaming anymore.
So for Hyenas they were willing to upgrade the engine, but the past decade of TW we haven't gotten any change???
One could see where their "priorities" were.
Disgusting wokeists.
The phrase "assume incompetence before malice" is and has always been a sham when so much evidence of incompetence joined to malice at the hip exists.
Don't agree, have you seen the footage from the game? Somebody had to make that cringe and it wasn't management.
The fact that 343 was more competent than CA is shocking.
You should check out what's happening with Sega and Phantasy Star. Many of CA's downfalls are echoing with Sega's own internal MMO team.
Thanks for continuing to cover this stuff. Awesome to be able to inform people as of what’s actually going on before they go blow their money on this company.
Awesome video!
In Holland, we have aa term for this situation where higher ups keep each other out of the wind. It called the job carousel. Once you get on it, everyone else keeps you on, because theyre all scared to fall off. Its one of the main reasons I prefer working for smaller IT companies.
The stereotypical dragqueen didn't got changed, they even made him one of the figurehead of the game.
Between CA and Bungie, these few months have been pretty interresting to watch.
Ironic that their ESG-core character designs were called out as "potentially offensive".
You can't ever please that crowd. No matter how hard you pander.
@GeraltofRivia22 true, the harder you pander the more people you insult. Esg also hurts bottom line because instead of hiring the best you hire based off skin and sex. Man that ending. That was the sigh of a man whose been proven right and hates it. That's a hell of a melancholy sound.
Pretty soon one could write a book about this tragedy.
We should name and shame the person responsible for Hyena that managed to keep their job.
I don't know. They keep saying how CA needs new blood and the old guys should leave, but that thing happened with Blizzard and Bioware and look at their games now. They don't need new people, especially not people with ideologies, they need better philosophy.

I don’t know many family oriented businesses like CA who have so many disgruntled employees and ex employees too…
I KNEW the fucking baguette thing was real.
The fact that they tried to sell a game as a Live-service and think that as long as they don't use the word "Live Service" pretty much spells out how much surface level thinking was going on there.
The gaming industry is now beginning to realise that they can't surf on every wave.
Join the ACK!
Now, all the pieces of the puzzle is slowly falling into place

Amazing! Hopefully they can and invest that money into improving total war games

The leaks just keep on coming. Jesus.
i still dont understand the reason why they went via the hyena's tangent? wtf were they thinking?
I have worked on several projects (that ultimately failed) that a higher up thought was a good idea, and all 80+ staff working on the project knew was a bad idea, and told him so if they were particularly bold. Some people in high positions believe in themselves more than a room full of experts. It is a very common human condition and I have seen it in many different spaces.
Trend chasing + monetization potential + esg money. What else?
That's SEGA for you.
Another great video as always really informative. It seems that there is not end to the CA rabbithole tbh.
I saw a Bellular News video today that stated that Sega make most of their money from gambling, with CA effectively costing them money. Sega would rather focus on their Pachinko machines instead of games. Because gambling makes stupid money. Video games, less so.
