This video was actually uploaded 5 days after Part 1 in February 2011. I hope they have helped you with this Dylan classic. Thank you for your support and very good luck with the song!
Just watched it myself too! I was sent the DVD by a UA-cam friend in the US .... a wonderful gesture that makes me feel very humble! Good luck with learning and singing this song.
Without lovely folks like you watching, following and learning from them (and leaving nice comments) they would be pointless, so thank you very much Janileigh!!
Just watched the Martin Scorsese film about Bob Dylan and decided to learn this song. Thanks for the excellent tutorial, it was really easy to follow. Cheers
On this sad evening with David Crosby, another gigantic songwriter and musician, having passed away today, I was looking for a lesson of "A hard rain's a-gonna fall" that would show the real chords Dylan played. I managed to find your lesson , Jim. I want to thank you very much for this ever so clear and unpretentious teaching. By the way, if your guitar is out of tune, as reproached in one of the comments, Dylan's guitar must have been out of tune as well. ;-) I would have been ever so glad, if I had had the chance to find an access to all that important background 60 odd years ago, when I started playing the guitar. But, alas, in those days you only found the lyrics in some book or magazine, if you were lucky. A difficult search however as books or magazines like that were not widley distributed. No chance as a German youngster to catch these lyrics, and often enouhg the chords, from a tape recorder. So, great chances nowadays for people of all ages to get better knowledge easily by the help of people like you. With greetings from Germany thank you ever so much, Jim, to have shared your knowledge and what's even more, all that for free.
Bless you for those comments Charly and very good luck with the song. The re-wind button on my Grundig TK14 was overworked back in the 60's as I tried to copy those Dylan chords (and learn the lyrics), but my musical ear training was developing naturally also and I certainly think emphasis on the visual and the instant gratification of modern technology have downsides that maybe limit other brain functions that can put younger folk at a disadvantage, but then again I might just be "gettin' old". In public performance Dylan's guitar was often out of tune, but a visit to the theatre to see the musical "Girl From the North Country" on Wednesday night confirmed what I already knew - he is the greatest songwriter of all time.
That was a brillaint lesson buddy, I found it very helpful. You spoke very clearly and your description of everything was easy to follow. It's obvious you know what your talking about. I found this video very helpful and i will be watch for anymore videos you bring out. Thank you, I learned a lot today.
Thank you very much Trevor; it's very rewarding to hear from folks who are using my videos to help them improve their guitar skills. Very good luck with this song and your guitar-playing skills now and in the future.
No I did not know about witmark book I just tryed to figure it out by ear with no luck, and then some 40years later, thanks to YT and yourself now I know how he played it, and to boot I am now retired and have time to work on some of his music...Thank's again!!
Well Bob , you had your original acoustic version removed from U Tube , now I am going to have to learn this one on my own.Thx's for forcing me to do what I should have done all along.Thank you Lowdenjim for the chance to learn, the original version.
to be able to break that song down while maintaining the spirit of it's enthusiasm is by no means an easy task...you damn brits! make it look so easy. very nice job..thanks brother!
Thanks Jim, great lesson as usual. Never could quite figure out what was going on with the alternative A/G chords. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise and knowledge.
Another brilliant lesson thank you very much, this was added to my favorits. I have been trying too figure out this song and oxford town& some of the others on this album since it came out...Thank's again!!
Thank you for your support and endorsement; it's very much appreciated. Good luck with this Dylan classic and other Dylan songs. Enjoy the movie - I hope it does justice to the brilliance of the great man.
Wow, thanks for the tow vids on this song. It's a great song and you have explained the playing of it really well. So lucid and helpful. Much appreciated. Many, many thanks and I look forward to looking at your other tutorials!
You're most welcome "sparky" - thank you very much for your support and endorsement. Good luck to you with this great Dylan song, and with the development of your guitar-playing skills.
Thank you very much for your support and kind words Jeff. I look back at some of my tutorials made a long time ago now and worry that they may not have modern appeal so it's good to get positive feedback like yours. Thanks again and very good luck with your playing!
@@Lowdenjim My daughter, who lives two time zones away, and will be visiting this summer, asked that I learn this song so we can sing it when she visits. I found your tutorial. It was just right for me, covered all the details, and I appreciated your relaxed friendly presentation. Cheers.
@@fouglasdir Thank you for sharing your personal story Jeff; I very much enjoyed your video of you playing the marimba(?) - such a lovely mellow sounding instrument! Are the sound bars made of rosewood?
Jim...Many thanks for a wonderful lesson..for a great song. Struggle with chords alternative to G and A (Just a bit slow as they are unfamiliar to my finger memory !) but will get them with repetition I am sure. Always loved the sound of those chords over basic shapes, but now I know how ! And it helps to start with the F shape to be reduced ! Very glad to be looking in again after long time getting ' sidetracked' on u-tube infinity.....!
Exactly the type of comment I love to hear Philco! Very good luck to you on the new level; I hope you're able to move through it smoothly and speedily, and on to the next one. That reminds me - gotta shift my butt and do my utmost to do the same.
I've followed Dylan with great interest over the years Jim and he still remains an enigma to me. His legacy will of course be his music and poetry, but there is so much more to the man and all any of us have ever had is a glimpse; he still continuse to fascinate me. I have a Takamine G series and am thinking of getting either a Tanglewood or a Freshman: any thoughts on which one to go with?
@aronmore1 I've always been impressed with his ability to keep top profile with his public persona whilst keeping his private life away from the clawing media. He continues to amaze and fascinate me too, and I can't begin to express the pleasure his music has brought me these last near 50 years! I'll pass my thoughts re guitars to you via a personal message.
Jim do you have a dvd with all youre sons that you teach here i will be the first one that will buye it because is realy good way how you teach step by step:) Jonas
absolutely brilliant, one of best tuition vids ever. Thank you so much for this! I find it hard to sing and play at the same time - do you have any vids on that? Cheers
Thank you very much for your support and the question. I'd have to say "Don't Think Twice" because of the quality of the guitar-playing and the inspiration (and challenge) it posed. When I first heard it when the album was released I never imagined being able to play it, and it also got me started with a UA-cam channel. Very good luck with Hard Rain!
Do you have a particular favourite Sara? I have to admit I didn't think Dylan and Joan Baez blended very well as a singing duo. I didn't like his link up with Johnny Cash either. I love both Johnny Cash and Joan Baez though!
Yes - he plays it the same way but with his capo on 1st fret in the key of Eb. His harmonica also is key of Eb. There are one or two subtle differences in his playing, but Dylan usually varied his technique in live performances.
Hi Danny - yes, I vary the emphasis on the upstrokes especially and sometimes just play the main downstrokes. It's important to remember that songs are enhanced by variations in guitar technique (tone, volume, pauses, attack, strum/pick mix etc) in order to convey mood/message/storyline etc... This song is quite long and does need variation as explained in my video, otherwise it will struggle to maintain audience attention throughout. No performer I know varies his songs more than Dylan himself, even to the extent of changing the melodies, chords, tempo, style and even his lyrics. That's how he still rocks after all these years. Good luck with playing this and other Dylan songs!
Hello there, thanks for the wonderful video! Can I ask where are you from? Since moving to the uk i've been obsessed with accents - obviously not too good at them cos I couldn't pinpoint it.... somewhere nort-ish of england? :)
Hi there - thank you for listening and your support. I'm lucky enough to be born and bred in the heart of the finest countryside on the planet, brewing the finest beers on the planet, and hosting the finest pubs on the planet serving the finest beer and pub grub at the lowest prices anywhere in the UK. I'm sworn to secrecy about the exact location in case folks down South discover where, and decide to "up-sticks" and move here. Oh - and BTW - Up the Blades!
You're welcome; I hope way back then you didn't waste your money on those Witmark publications that showed you how NOT to play his songs! I feel like sending mine back for refund as being "unfit for purpose" - even after all these years.....
There are of course many reasons why folks feel the need to indulge in social media "Trolling"; some of them innocent enough, but due to them being (for example) on the autistic scale, suffering from OCD or ADHD etc. However, there are others who seek to show their anti-social side and try to undermine those they target. I don't know which particular category you fit into Ronald, but clearly you have a bit of a problem. You might be better employed making efforts to build a UA-cam presence and profile that can enhance your "raison d'etre" rather than making yourself look silly in this very public space. I wish you luck, as I'm going to assume that you fit into the innocent trolling category rather than the malignant one.

Those hints and subtle bits are so important- 🙏
Absolutely Lawrie - Dylan's guitar work was so distinctive and those subtleties he used helped to set him apart from the rank and file.

Hey man, very very good! Was in hmv and heard the song playing! Made me wanna learn :D
Do you have the tab written?
I saw one live version where he had the capo at the first fret? Is that the same as the studio recording
Yes - he plays it the same way but with his capo on 1st fret in the key of Eb. His harmonica also is key of Eb. There are one or two subtle differences in his playing, but Dylan usually varied his technique in live performances.
i must b getting better.... thanks
are you switching different patterns? sounds like sometimes you play 1, 2, 3 and 1. Other times 1, 2 and 3, 1. Sometimes just 1, 2, 3, 1.

They would work ok too, but I try to stick close to the way Dylan played his songs on his original recordings.
