Finally someone went Deep into Snow plowing. This was very helpful to a Newbie like myself! I appreciate all your expertise and advice.
Super helpful, a must watch before purchasing a new plow kit. Thank you so much!
Good job John! I just picked up an AC 400, Warn 54" plow and Badlands 3500# winch. It's a bit of a learning curve to know-it-all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you Sir! Lots of great info as usual!
You have a few good points. However some I don't agree on.
1. you don't have to have an 850 to use a 60" blade. 570 will do fine. What your missing in this is traction. Doesn't matter what size atv you have when your wheels slip. There is only so much traction on ice or snow with a veriable of around 10%.
I operate a Tandem truck plow with front blade and side wing loaded with salt and can get stuck just as easy as my 570 Atv.
It all depends on momentum.
2. You can slide a split pvc pipe under your blade. Cheap as chips.
3. Bigger tires = less torque.
Last point is. 60" plow will cover your tire tracks when blade is on an angle with a 48" atv.
Your vids are good. But not all your info is correct.
i bought my 60" KFI plow for my 22 Sportsman 450 cause of tip about covering tire tracks while angled i tried mine before i loaded up tonite to go get recalls fixed i will have to check that out lol
Damn. This may well be the most under appreciated channel on UA-cam. Props man 👍
Thanks man. New content every week. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
I have been using a Honda 450 with 60@ blade for 23 years works awesome no problem in 2.5’ of snow
12:20 for a Safety light/beacon I use a Guardian Angel Elite, flashes many colours and has a white work light on the top and front, Works for I would recommend it for others who need a safety light, Can also be mounted on belts and hardhats/helmets also water proof and good till -40C temperature
After plowing since 2019 on a canam 570 max xt with Plow to go system with quick release, here are my observations. It works very well, except that I frequently break my cables. I have tried synthetic cables, even tried a specialized strap (looks like seat belt) and it did last longer than just metal or synthetic rope, but in the end eventually breaks. You need some sort pully system to better lift the Plow. I also find the front shocks need to be stronger when lifting. The attachment under the atv has a downside that you have less clearance but easy to remove and add the Plow. I have used it to push earth and crush stone as well. I use the Plow to create 4 large luge runs and I have a long driveway 500feet long. It certainly gets used. What would I do differently? Bigger chassis bigger shocks and tracks for the luge runs in the back yard. I have the 60 inch plow.
I never thought a winch cable is the best option to lift the plow but that what all brands use to lift. No matter what the constant short travel in and out destroys the cable or strap no matter what material. The only real solution i found is have 2 which cables. A cheap full length one for snow plow season and then change over to the higher quality one for the rest of the year.
I plow with a Can Am Outlander 850, Warn plow that is 10 years old and been on 2 Outlanders. 2 years ago I had my drive paved, about 400 feet long. I installed a poly cutting edge. Cleans like a charm. Much more quite, wears like iron. I pretreat drive with salt or CaCl2 before the snow starts using a broadcast lawn spreader.
I agree with you on the poly-edge for pavement. I actually used another hack that I saw here on UA-cam. Just grab a 1 1/2" or 2" (depending on plow size) of PVC pipe. I have a gravel driveway and use it for the 1st and 2nd plow just to get the base laid down, then I hammer it off and use the steel for the rest of the winter. A piece of PVC pipe had lasted me 2 seasons in N. Saskatchewan where we get tons of snow every year, so I plow 6-10 times a winter and it has lasted just fine and far less expensive than getting a poly-edge blade. Thanks for all the tips. PS I run a 60" Moose plow on my Polaris 500 EFI and it handles 1 foot of snow with ease. It even hammers through 2-3 foot drifts. Its doable with my machine at least.
Very helpful information. Going to pick up my first ever quad with a plow on it. Looking forward to plowing some snow. Thanks
its alot of fun!
Good video..some good points. I will say that I have a manual adjust cycle country snow ,blade that I've been using for 19 years, and yesterday was the first time I did some repair work on it. A nut came off the on the turnbuckle on the cable. I have three manual adjustments on the blade and it doesn't take long to blade everything and only get off less than few times to adjust. It doesn't take long to learn how to plow smart and not hard. If I have replace it I'd probably go electric adjust . (I'm getting older)
There's no need to have a large snow blade for plowing driveways. You will appreciate a small blade when plowing sidewalks and smaller areas. Also you can better orientate where the plow is when its only as wide as your quad.
Spray some silicone lube (Or your favorite lube) on all the pivot points before using. only takes a minute.
Footnote: You will learn a lot about snow when plowing as every snow is different in weight and texture. No one rule applies to all snow.
Thank you for the feedback sir, those are all great tips!
Thank you for the tips. First snow storm coming this Friday to try out my Cub cadet challenger 750 with cub cadet 72" plow
Atv plow makes sno removal fun!
You are correct about the tires, mine are original front 2016 on my honda rancher and they suck, unfortunately I'm still dealing with them for reasons unknown lol very good video, ps, rubber flap on top made a big difference!!
Just watched this. Good tips. Just put on a snatch block and will be switching to synthetic rope. Thanks for the tips. Also just realized you in NH. I’m in hooksett. I’m going to watch more of your videos.
Glad it was helpful. We actually live very close. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnFrancoNH absolutely. Very helpful stuff. Maybe a community area ride sometime?
I have 600 feet of gravel driveways. I have 3 areas I end my pushes. Then come spring it makes gravel clean up easy. I have a 2007 Suzuki eiger 400 with a 48 inch steel blade. I love it.
Great setup..Thanks for watching!
This setup works excellent on gravel or grass. studio.ua-cam.com/users/video09okFok20R4/edit
Thank you for information I just got new clutch belt on my 2018 Polaris sportsman 570.
Glad it helped
Just got the chance to plow with a quad again today after like 5 years. I got a 03 Kodiak 400 from a friend in exchange for a little work. I ran through all the suspension, new piston and jug, used like new 14” wheels with maxxis zilla 28s and all kinds of other mods. I threw in a 1mm shim on the primary and a epi gold spring. When I jump off the quad to turn the blade and it still in Drive it basically sits there rocking forward and back so I think my clutch is good haha. It’s got a standard moose plow with the new style thick skids that work fantastic idk if that’ll work for you or now. They were like $25 on eBay and the skid is 1/2” or so thick
Sounds like you got your self a pretty effective plowing rig there! Good to hear. Ive tried thicker skids. They work but still will focus too much pressure on only 2 points of contact...But a thick poly edge is far superior from my experience and very gentle on my asphalt driveway because it has way more surface area.
Cool, I'm number 444 on likes and yes your right about every driveway is different. This is my first year using a plow and I'm learning as I go. Thanks for the info.
I have a dirt driveway and we set the skids lower during early and late season well the ground is still soft
Appreciate the tips! If I may make a few suggestions :)
1. If you could put a timeline in your description for each tip that would be great! That way I can go back to it when I need to
2. I don’t know what you use to record but I recommend a lavalier mic! Because you’re in the garage there is an echo when you talk and the Lav mic would help a lot with getting rid of that and focusing on your voice.
Again thanks for the tips and subscribed!
Thanks for the feedback..I will consider your tips. I use a Rode Videomic Pro+. I do plan buying a wireless lavalier mic as the channel gets bigger. They are very expensive. And right now not cost effective. Would like to upgrade my camera first. Thanks for watching!
Thanks John, very informative. I almost finished my plow for the Defender and while trying it, I discover soon the plow is not visible from my seat. I'll have to add those markers for sure! About the winch saver you talk about at 17:20. Do you refer to a rubber stopper or you refer to the magnetic device that automatically stops the winch? I am looking for that magnetic gadget that I could install. But I just can't seem to find any on Amazon. Maybe I don't search using the right name for it. Any clue about that? Thanks!
Cant wait to see the plow in action. The magnetic switch you are looking for is a polaris fairlead switch. amzn.to/3hVwnNT It works but cuts out too quickly and leaves the hook loose and does not put enough tension. It will bounce around when the plow is not on the machine. I like the warn winch saver rubber bumper because of this.
Where I live there is like many inches of ice on top of the road I plow . I use skis only early winter before the ice forms .
Great idea, i love to hear about different setups!
I have a 2020 Polaris ranger North Star. Attached a conquerer kolpin 72 inch steel. My factory blue synthetic winch rope broke off at the black bar that is found just below where the winch rope comes out. It broke after two plow sessions. I suggest removing this bar, and replacing winch rope with flat tow strap like winch cable. Hopefully will last all winter rather than just two winter snows.
My suspicions confirmed even the factory warn is prone to wear from plow operation. Problem is use my winch all winter long for other uses which needs full length etc. Im not swapping out my winch line every time it snows for a strap. Gotta figure out a solution.
Thanks for the video! I'm just starting my research on getting an ATV to plow my big driveway. Is there a brand of ATV you would recommend? or things to keep in mind when just purchasing the ATV itself? New used? I would pretty much just be using it for snow.
John Deere 420
I have a old dinli 700 centhor works really good. And i live in Sweden
Thank you for the info. I realize this is for ATV type plowing, but for those with a UTV, I recommend you use the seat belt. Smacking the windshield or inside mirror with your face isn't fun. Yes, from experience, first time plowing with it.
Good call!
very helpful, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Gravel and skids are no problem!!! Also can use PVC on edge of plow. check out other videos!!
i have 60inch on foreman 500 works great
I have a Honda 400 auto l put new mud lites on and put 1oo lbs of weight on back works great
I have a polaris 500 4x4 2010 model. I'm looking for the best bang for my buck plow wise. I plan to do 15 driveways. I'm in KS
Any recommendations??
I know 48in, but brand an model??
I have a 21' Kodiak 700 base model with cvt with 54" kfi plow. Do you recommend a clutch upgrade? The tires still spin when snow is pushed up to the bank, but I feel like I have to do multiple passes to get through deeper snow. Should I consider a tire upgrade as well? Thoughts?
no clutch kit needed. Make sure you are in low. And yes tires improve traction 10 fold
Great video, no talk about tire pressure. Does it make sense to lower your tire pressure a bit?
Would love to show you a photo of my Polaris 1000 with the glacier plow 66 inch I modified the blade with scrap pieces I had left over from the plastic cutting edge I installed also utilizing hockey pucks(skids) awesome design very little wear
Definitely interested to see. Send it to my IG contemporary_homestead
I have a 2021 570 sportsman just order from Polaris a 52 in plow should I have got the 60 in I’m now worried about when I angle it it might not cover the path of my tires
Yes you could be correct. The 66" on mine has 1-2" on either side when fully angled. Thanks for watching!
Good information thank you for this. I have a sportsman’s 450 I use to plow. Does a good job but get error code# 420194 everytime I plow. I know it’s a throttle code but not sure what is causing this. Didn’t know if you ever encountered this. Thanks!
Theres an issue with the throttle safety switch inside the throttle most likely. Its there to prevent a stuck cable at WOT. Its a common issue, they just stretch and wear to the point they malfunction and do what you are experiencing.
Do you think a 66" blade is too big for a Can Am Outlander XT Max 850 with a Dalton clutch kit and stock 26 x 10 x 14 tires. Also. I have a 2000 Suzuki Mini truck. It's 63"s wide and weighs almost 1,600 lbs without a plow. It only has a 660 cc motor and 26 x 10 x 14 atv tires but does have 4x4 and low gear. Would it be better to use my atv or the mini truck for plowing? Thanks in advance - Dan
My wife has sportsman 850, and i use her machine with the same 66" plow some times and it does an excellent job no lack of power. I prefer the atv for plowing its much more nimble and easy to maneuver around obstacles
Can you do a short clip video of everything on your list. Just wondering. Thank you for your tips
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Yes do a video demonstration of all the list because it help more understanding
Hi John, when you tripped your snow plow on the end of your driveway the first time, did it do and damage to the power angle unit ? Thanks
I've tripped it hard a hand full of times and no damage as of yet. The springs do its job and the power angle will compress if one side is slammed into. Its must have an internal bypass or relief mechanism.
@@JohnFrancoNH Thanks, I just ordered one from Amazon. I’m gonna give it a shot, I’ll have to manufacture some mounts, or buy some. I’ll wait for the unit to come in and do a markup and see what I’ll need. Thanks again for your response. Check out some of my videos, I’m new at this and just getting started but I did a few videos the beginning of this year and a few last year. 👍
Did you used to pitch for the Mets?
Can I plow snow with a Yamaha 450 Grizzly Four wherler. Thanks
yes of course
@@JohnFrancoNH Ok. Can you recommend a good plow? Maybe you have a video on that. thanks
One thing...clutch kits ain't needed if you run a honda...there direct shaft drive I run 28 inch itp mud light xtr's and the shaft drive never knows the difference....also I'll never smoke a belt from trying to push to big of a snow bank
No issue pushing big snow mounds. All 4 wheels will spin if i cant push it further.
Learn the pvc pipe trick 👍 does wonders
Thats a great idea but does it stay in place? I imagine it would slide around eventually as it breaks in. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnFrancoNH if the cut is good it helps. I originally came across a YT vid of a guy showing it. You can watch him cut and set it up . It surprisingly holds on great .. Let me see if I find his link
@@JohnFrancoNH sorry I meant ABS .. pvc is more flexible and doesn’t hold up in cold as well. Here his link ua-cam.com/video/RYE3Qf-3WVk/v-deo.html it’s pretty interesting Forsure.
@@JohnFrancoNH I plan to make a vid this winter as well but need the snow first 😁
How do you know what size plow to get for your atv?
depends on engine size and machine weight
Where did you get the yellow poly bar? I have same plow
I made it. I have a link for the Falline blank in one of my plowing videos. Check out the playlist.
Why don’t you use the plastic cutting edges from Donovan it’s made for fishers plow blades are use i use it on mine end it does a pretty decent job on plowing the driveway
Will check it out. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnFrancoNH If you need info where they are located I know where
ever thought of putting pvc at the bottom of the plow to protect the gravel?
i dont do alot of gravel so i have never tried. I hear it works tho
Chainsaw tails make good cheap plow markers
I wish you would show picture examples for each recommendation
i know i did think if it but that would of made the video much much longer. Maybe in a future video. Thanks for the feedback
I have 46” plow, what size atv should I look to get
at least a 400cc 4x4
Im gonna argue that HP doesn't matter that much. You're doing all that work in Low gear anyway so there's plenty of torque multiplication. The biggest benefit of larger cc ATVs is the weight - more weight, more grip. Unless youre trying to plow to 1ft of ridicously wet snow, I don't see this as a problem.
Be honest is the mud bar useful??
Im guessing you are referring to the side armor rails? Yes they are very useful actually. Especially the way i use my machine. Its has benefits you dont realize until you really start using the atv in different environments.
1- Protects under the footwells and plastics from breaking/damage.
2- Its a great grab point all away around the machine when you get really stuck to lift and hold onto the atv.
3-Strengthens the front bumper since it is attached to it.
4-Added width acts as fender flares blocking flying debris/mud
Will 600cc work
yes i believe it would especially with upgraded tire for better traction
most polaris parts n accs are junk indeed. i have the plate shoes u mention, def the way to go
yup some oem parts just dont cut it... Thanks for watching!
$100 used Lincoln stick welder + rebar = new skid shoes.
Heated grips are the cats ass!!!
yes sir!
Plowed with them, before you were born. They just were not called quads way back then...
I never knew the model T had a plow attachment interesting👍
Coming from a guy that can afford to sleep in. "Tips"
Do i sense a bit of jealously? LOL
YIOU MUST HAVE MONEY TO BURN!!!
what kind of comment is that?
