I remember seeing a comment on one of Marsh's videos that said something along the lines of "At this point it wouldn't be out of character for Marsh to record an audiobook of the original novels just so he could log a playthrough of those, too." Turns out that comment predicted the future.
I can see this video being in time the way the SMT community conveys the origins of the franchise to the newcommers. Not to mention the effort it must have taken to have all these creators present and visuals prepared. Great work!
This is too cool. I was so crazy about this novel that I reached out to the original team that translated this work. This, My friends, is more than I could have hoped for. The famicom styled fx were more than awesome. 1000%!! And an infinite thanks
Man I wish Nagitani written the bastard salesman dwarf 'Rag' into his Digital Devil Story graphic novel & had Nakajima choke the crap out of him. I bet vocalizing that would've been so cathartic for Marsh! Oh well, at least he got to slap his cheeks in Last Bible 3. :D
This was truly an amazing watch, I was so captived it I watched it all in one sitting. All the love and effort put into this project is just mind-blowing: the narration, everyone's performances, the sprite work... Just an amazing piece of art. I hope to see the rest of the novels one day, this was an incredibly fun watch.
This was soooooooo cool!!! Thank you for this! Have any of you guys seen or read the “Digital Devil Saga” novels? (Or novelizations?). They are by Yu Godai and called “Quantum Avatar Tuner”. It’s two books in English. They were really good! But hard to find.
Man this is some amazing work it's because of Marsh that I found out about more SMT content. This audiobook had some love and devotion put into it. Wonder if this will convince anyone to translate the other novels and make an audiobook out of them.😅
Absolutely marvelous job everyone ^_^ The level of dedication here is something to behold for all megaten fans and I applaud you guys for the massive efforts youve made to bring the old nishitani novels to life You guys are a shining example for all megaten fans out there, keep at it ^_^
Wow, that was really fun. I (like all megatenists) can't read (okay, it's dyslexia) so i really appreciate the audiobook format to make literature accessible to people like me. I loved the visuals, added music, and the story was just what I imagined MegaTen would be like as a novel. I think this was a great celebration of Megaten history and the community. I would love to see another, specifically Digital Devil Story 2, as the ending of the first book is largely anticlimactic in a way. If I'd have to give a critique, it'd be that the voice actors sometimes didn't feel like they had the right direction. I'm not really upset, as none of these guys are professions VAs, iirc, and it's not a big deal, but something worth noting and improving on in the future.
Great job I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope some day you can get to book 2. I haven't played any of the games but enjoyed the OVA so much that I sought out the books and so this was a treat to watch.
So this is essentially a dark occult version of Weird Science combining dark alchemy and nerd-vengenance fantasy with computer fiction except summoning a demon rather than a hot babe.
This is absolutely fantastic! The performances by everyone are brilliant, the sprite work and little touches are just great, and the video itself serves as a great resource for tell this story; I'm just glad it exists
Great work. I think this definitely made me appreciate the story a lot more over the OVA. Probably because the narration makes psychological states of characters a lot more clear than, uh, whatever the OVA does. I also love the details like making Loki's voice more normal the more he materializes. I know it's asking for a lot, since this is the only fully translated DDS novel, but I think making something like this for every DDS novel would be great. Of course, you'd need to find a translator. And I think there was someone on the sub who said they might give it a try some while ago? Definitely seems looking into. Alternatively, do you think there'd be enough interest to hire a translator using funding from the community? > This video’s script is based on the fan translation by MeNaSe Publications, and was slightly edited due to the nature of adapting a book into another medium. Could you say what was changed?
I think the second Megami Tensei novel is translated already, but I've never read it so I'm not sure honestly. Everyone I talked to about future projects that was involved in this one was seemed interested in the possibility of working on more, but past that, I'm not sure how much we would be able to do. The key issue is definitely needing translations. I'd almost certainly need to commission someone to do that, but unless they were either working for free or on severe discount as a favor, chances are that it would cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars for an entire novel and to be perfectly frank, I don't know if I could even get $500 with the community backing me. That said, there are a lot of great people in the community who enjoy doing projects for the fanbase, but atm I can't think of anyone who would be willing to work with me in that capacity. Granted, I haven't gone around looking for anyone yet so who knows. We'll definitely try to do what we can though. I can't really give you specific examples for the edits made since this was done months ago, but I can explain the thought process. Most of the changes to the script were minor editorial changes like spelling or grammar. A few lines were slightly changed due to this being an audiobook meaning certain narrative devices (like statements about point of view) felt redundant or were somewhat relying on reader imagination. Beyond that, there were some instances where character dialog was changed to make it sound more "natural," since the MeNaSe script's phrasing often came off as very awkward. For total clarity, the biggest single change is probably one of Takamizawa Kyoko's scenes in Prolouge - Chapter 4. In the original script, Kyoko does a little whimper as she dies and her legs spasm after Kano Miyuki bites into her inner thigh. The line was cut from the edited script because I told the female VAs if they were uncomfortable with a line (due to the sexual nature of many of the assault scenes) we could probably work around it, but this almost never came up because I was upfront about the material of the book and tried to be clear that certain roles may have to do uncomfortable scenes when I was approaching people to see if they were interested. The aforementioned scene is the only time I recall this happening and it was just one sentence. That said, I would not have made any changes that would've changed the context of a scene (or more broadly, the book itself).
@@KidCapes the translation problem goes for the second novel as well? Did you have anyone go through the 1st novel in Japanese to make sure the translation isn’t super off in places? Or are you thinking of only needing translators for the novels which certainly aren’t translated (dds 3 and new dds).
@@2tehnik I don't own copies of the novels myself, so I didn't even think about double checking them tbh. I don't know anyone who would've been willing to double check it for me for a whole book as well. There shouldn't be any issues with the 2nd novel if it's already translated.
@@KidCapesfunny enough, the OVA makes me squirm when kyoko dies. i always look away during the scene where she gets grabbed, precisely because of that.
This was amazing! Good work everyone! And from the ending alone I can see why Atlus got so inspired. I'm tempted to write a little something something myself now.
Amazingly done, team! I love the Megami Tensei series; you guys have done superb work in capturing the essence of the novel! Whilst I was listening to this audiobook, I couldn't help but think of the OVA and how much it has missed what you guys have managed to encapsulate! Definitely look forward to future works :)
Really great, by any chance is there any way you can add subtitles? I know the purpose of an audiobook is not to have any kind of writing but I really want to share it with my friends but unfortunately they don't understand English well however they understand it better if they read it, the animation of the sprites is really wonderful.
