I hear you say and do things in these old videos you would have cringed at yourself for these days lmao. Now I wanna hike the LHHT. Thanks always for the inspiration Frozon!
This is my first exposure to your channel that I discovered three years ago. I have since started backpacking and hammock camping extensively, mostly in Western PA. I still have a thru hike of the LHT on my radar. It was great to see this again, I loved the "25lb base weight/ 41lb pack comment." I value the other UA-cam channels that I found from this exposure, and the experiences and friends that I have made on the trail since. Thanks
Thanks for this video! I actually just did this as a 5 day thru hike with some friends last week as my first backpacking trip ever... (not the smartest decision). But I did it, and this video was great for helping me know what to prepare for!
+Outdoor Adventures More like, how are my feet, ankles, knees, and back? Haha. 70 miles isn't the most wise first backpacking trip. I couldn't really pick a favorite part. I loved the scenery in the last 6 miles but that was also the most grueling terrain. I found a Timber Rattlesnake after Rt 30 and that was also a highlight.

I’ve driven under the bridge in the PA Tpk and always wondered what the trail was like. Thank you - very entertaining and I learned a lot about the trail.
Frozen - Thank you for this awesome video. My introduction to multi day backpacking was April of 2016 when my friend and I did this trail from Mile 11 to Mile 31. We stayed at Route 653 and Grindle Ridge. This year we're hoping to pick up where we left off and go from Mile 31 to Mile 52 in State Game Lands 42. It was really cool to see your perspective of some of the ground we covered last year. Hopefully, I am healthier this year for the hike than last. About a week before our scheduled departure, I got a wicked case of bronchitis. I damn near died on a few of the climbs, but the show must go on !!! I look forward to seeing more of the terrain you've covered in this video. Thanks a bunch for the preview !!! --- Dave
Thanks for you efforts in presenting your trek on UA-cam. Your filming and explanations are well done. I also recommend your video to anyone who is wanting to watch it while walking on a treadmill.

Great video, actually I love all your videos. I did the LHHT 2 years ago by myself and loved it. think I'm going to do it again. Keep up the great work- Bobby
I've not hiked all the trail at one time, but have done a series of long day hikes. I especially love the Ohiopyle end of the trail. It is a challange. Trail condition was always excellent. Lokking forward to thru hike someday.
fantastic video. you show a great appreciation for the simple things. thanks for your effort filming. you video seems very natural even though filming takes alot of effort!
This was an awesome video! I printed a map of the trail and took notes as I followed you along. I really appreciate it when you mention where you are on the trail. My husband and I are going to do a small section soon as our first ever backpacking trip. We will be using the info you provided as a resource to help us plan. Thank you so much!!!
Congratulations! I bailed out at Route 30. It was during a brutal heat wave. I hiked about a mile up to Walets Bar.( new name now I think ) Called a friend in Latrobe to come get me. Drank buckets of ice water and lots of beer. Like you I only saw one other couple on the trail.
Jason, thanks for doing this video. Someday I would like to visit this trail. You did really good to complete this very long hike, all alone, with (to me) a heavy pack through some rain while recording video. Congratulations! -Daniel H.
Jason, I just came across this video today and really enjoyed it. My buddy and I hiked a little over one-half of the LHHT several years ago and this brought back quite a few memories. You have a lot of interesting stuff on your channel so I just subscribed. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Nalgene, bladder, gore tex, crocs... the list goes on. I guess we have all been there. LOL This is the video beginners should watch instead of comparing themselves to more experienced ultralight backpackers.
I learn a lot from you and I love your minimalistic gear approach, but it made me laugh in the beginning when you said you brought all the Lord of the Rings books. Lol.
Awesome! That was the best of many LHHT videos I have watched! It definitely gives me something to think about doing down the road, as I am just starting to really learn about backpacking etc. Ohiopyle is only 2.5 hours from where I live so it is within striking distance! You have made a collection of really well done and enjoyable videos. I hope more people find your channel and subscribe. Best of luck and thanks for the adventures!
Thank you! I'm really glad others are able to enjoy my adventures. Goodluck on your adventures as well, and as always don't hesitate to ask questions. I love your videos! You come across very natural and genuine. I've done a few trails myself, including the Dolly Sods. If you haven't been there yet, you should check out the Quehanna Trail in central PA. It reminds me of the Dolly Sods a bit. I did the 75 mile loop solo all the way around and it was the best week of my life -- so far. I'm taking my boyfriend for his first backpacking trip this weekend, just a quick hike around the Hickory Creek wilderness. Hike on, my friend!
Outdoor Adventures born and raised in Connecticut and living in oregon now...I miss hiking the rolling hardwood. forests...Pennsylvania trails look awesome (and under rated)...screw California lol
I came across your video today as I was doing some research on the LHHT. Very good video. I hope to do a thru of the LHHT sometime in 2015. The AT is my obsession right now, but PA is the home of my birth and the LHHT is where I cut my backpacking teeth. I was further east near the time you did this hike, trying to get the AT PA Rocks done. Keep on hiking. Now to check out your other videos.
I have an extra sled. but there's no snow right now. I bet that beeping. noise you heard when you were at rt 31 shelters was that rock quarry about a mile from there over by hidden valley ski resort
Another great video My man. I know what you mean about too much tail mix, did that on the Black Forest Trail. I'm up near Scranton, PA. Hoping to get out to do the Susquehannock trail system in September. Keep on Hiking...
+Bruce Wallace Sleeping in the shelters is really relaxing with the fireplace and an audiobook. I really love my hammock and don't sleep very well on the ground, but I'd still opt for shelters in temps below 50
Nice video. I had to laugh at the beginning. My niece and I stayed in Shelter 5 at the Rt. 56 shelter area in 2009, and bailed to another because of animals on the roof (or in the rafters/chimney). Or maybe it's haunted.
good job dude I know the area very well We snowmobile up there in the winter . We usually start at rt 31 head south to Ohio Pyle turn around head north to Walats (rt 30) in 5-8 hrs 70mi.
Questions from someone planning to do sections this late spring: - Favorite & most scenic points to target? (if you could only do 3 days at slow pace, where would you start & finish?) - Any water crossings or is everything bridged? - See any dangerous wildlife or sketchy characters? - Anything to look out for or be aware of going in for the first time on this trail? Thanks man, and great video!
If you are doing late spring, I'd suggest route 653 to mile marker 0 in Ohiopyle. There will be lots of streams that time of year, at least there was in the early spring, this video was done in the fall and most of the streams were dry. Another section I'd recommend would be from 653 to seven springs and depending how you feel. try to get to beam rock on your way out. Everything is bridged, so no water crossings. Everyone I met on the trail was really nice, though occasionally you will meet one of those people who just doesn't even say hi in passing. I think I was close to a black bear the last day, but I never saw it. I heard something pretty big run away a couple times within a few minutes going up the last hill on the way out. The trail is very rocky in some places, especially toward the middle sections, expect some blisters and I highly recommend some ankle support. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video! I hiked the trail almost 20 years ago and I remember exploring an area off the trail and eating on top of a giant rock well above the trees. I'm hoping you might know where on the trail I'm talking about because I'm wanting to go out this fall and get a good weekend of hiking in and visit that spot if I can figure out where it is. Lol
Also - I see you are in Pittsburgh as well (or at least you have PGH sports stuff in your room so maybe you're nearby) - Got a list of favorite hikes around here? Right now I'm planning on working through the "50 Hikes in Western Pennsylvania" book.
Near Pittsburgh I'd recommend Oil creek state parks, gerard hiking trail 36 miles and 2 shelter sites and obviously the LHHT especially in the spring when the snow is melting.
Nicely done. So we were talking about how happy you look when you are done...but you still enjoy your trip. So is the saying, "Enjoy the journey it isn't about the destination true for you?"
+Paula Martin That last night at Ohiopyle I honestly didn't want the trip to end, but it was nice know that I could be on my own with no help from anyone else for 6 days.
You haven't had ramen until you've had Nongshim Shin Ramyun Red or Black with dehydrated bits of pork chop and a poached egg... Even some powdered egg would work. A little more expensive, but I'll never go back to the cheap stuff.
love watching ur videos man. sitting at home today on a cold saturday in prague. definitely inspiring me todo some trips. keep up the awesome videos! when's ur next trip with Gary?
He's saving his PTO for the superior hiking trail this year so not sure how many trips he's going to be going on. Glad you are enjoying the trips and definitely get out there!
Outdoor Adventures hey man I was just wondering, on your solo hikes does your imagination ever run wild at night, like having it really spooky in the woods, aliens ghosts, bigfoot, etc.?
+james dye when I first started it did. But the more you go out the less it happens and the more natural it feels. I have a beginner backpacking series that I'm going to touch on ways to make it less scary for your first couple times. As soon as it gets warmer out I'll do that video.
Im planning a trip from mile 70 to mile 57, and I was wandering if there were any fresh water springs or wells at the first set of shelters or anywhere in the area. I have a water filter system so even a stream would suffice. Great video I really enjoyed it, hope to do the whole trail when I have time off work!
mike cooper Hey Mike, each shelter has a water pump. LHHT on facebook sent out a notice a few days ago about no water at route 271 shelter area but there is still water at the parking lot nearby. Keep in mind the water at the pumps is not potable so you still will have to filter or boil it to be safe. Not many streams summer/fall until you come back down in elevation.
Great vlog! Appreciate the insights. For winter backpacking Laurel Highlands, I've figured out the permit process, can you perhaps recommend a 3 day 2 night route? Hoping to get in Ohiopyle State Park at the beginning or end....Thanks.
+Hassan Mahmud start at route 653 parking lot go toward Johnstown for a little bit you will see the cemetery and a little further down the trail you will have a nice overlook. Turn back after the overlook and head stay at rt 653 shelter area. The next day walk 13 or so miles to Ohio Pyle shelter area then finish up to mile 0. That's if you can get a ride back. You will pass some cool glacier rocks and some awesome scenery. And finish it up with a nice view of the river and surrounding hills.
A fellow backpacker said she has paid one of the outfitters to shuttle them up trail from Ohiopyle and drop them off at a trailhead. Have you heard anything about that?
Outdoor Adventures yes indeed. Your videos are educational to me and im from ohio so most these hikes are not all that far from me.looking forward to your next video!! Great work
Enjoyed your video. I drive under the Turnpike bridge for the LHHT frequently when I go back and forth to MD and always wondered how nice the trail was. Do you know of any shuttles that will take hikers from a start point back to your vehicle for those that do not have local rides?
+Retired USMC I know there is a shuttle that has this service but not sure the name. Also my friend used them once and although very nice they were very expensive he said
Excellent video bro, Have to keep that positive spirit. What was that battier bank you use? I need a better one for my adventures. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.
70 miles wow what achievement, and a very scenic place to do it. This is a real cool channel you have here, I just discovered it and have enjoyed many of your videos. I look forward to more from you. What adventures do you have planned for this season? The LHHT is less than 6 hrs from Ohio I will try to get out there someday.
Thanks man. I chose not to hammock camp for a couple reasons: 1. I have a new hammock that has never been in any of my other videos, so the first time using it I wanted to show the setup and features, this would have ultimately added a lot of time to the already long video. 2. The fire rings around the tent and shelter areas were pretty far away from any trees I could use for the hammock, and all except for the last night it got somewhat chilly for my setup. (the EN rating on the bag I brought was 41). 3. After the first 2 days I had my organization system down in the shelter. I knew where everything was in the morning and could pack up and leave rather quickly. Be expecting the next adventure to feature the hammock setup.
Are there places to set up a tent in between the shelters? I want to do this so bad, but I'm recovering from lyme and I dont know how far I can go in a day.
Thank you so much for taking us with you. My girlfriend and I are seriously considering this trail. Questions: 1. Where can I obtain a permit ? 2. Shelters; first served or do you reserve them ? If you reserve them; did u brought a tent with you ?(Just in case) Shelters are shared with other backpackers ? 3. Is there somewhere to re-supply at some point or do we have to pack all food for all days ? Thank you. Luis (from Puerto Rico)
You can find all the information you need here: www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/lhht/ Shelters you need to reserve. I did bring a hammock shelter for a just in case scenario, say I got stuck out in bad weather I could just setup for a few hours and then continue. The weather on the mountains changes constantly, and I highly suggest having rain gear. Unfortunately there is no resupply point unless you can get someone to drive up and drop food off to you. There are a lot of parking areas usually near the shelters. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Laurel Highlands I am starting to plan a trip on the Laurel Highlands trail any bonus tips? This will be my first hiking trip hoping one of many to come.
+P Doerfler check out the new video of mine called the return to the Laurel highlands it's a better one with more tips. Also in the next couple weeks I'll have another thruhike of the area but with 4 people instead of solo. I'd you are interested

Great video mate :0 Im subbed, keep up the good work :)
You haven't had ramen until you've had Nongshim Shin Ramyun Red or Black with dehydrated bits of pork chop and a poached egg... Even some powdered egg would work. A little more expensive, but I'll never go back to the cheap stuff.
I'm dying to try that. Test myself u know.
love watching ur videos man. sitting at home today on a cold saturday in prague. definitely inspiring me todo some trips. keep up the awesome videos! when's ur next trip with Gary?
Outdoor Adventures Thanks, I appreciate the info, keep making the videos I enjoy them, I was thinking of doing the same once I save up for a good cam
Looking forward to watching when you do! i can't get enough of hiking adventure videos.
Thanks.
Great vid! Watched it all the way through. Did you actually see Bigfoot? Haha
A fellow backpacker said she has paid one of the outfitters to shuttle them up trail from Ohiopyle and drop them off at a trailhead. Have you heard anything about that?
+jajwritersblock yes I believe it's called wilderness voyages. But apparently it is way overpriced unless you have a group.
So weird not seeing u in a hammock
Wow going back to the old videos!?
Outdoor Adventures yes indeed. Your videos are educational to me and im from ohio so most these hikes are not all that far from me.looking forward to your next video!! Great work
Are you going to do another video of your new hammock? Also when is the next adventure?
Yes there will be a video with the new hammock, and I'm planning to do another adventure in the next 2 weeks.
Also my friend used them once and although very nice they were very expensive he said
Cool, thanks man.
+Retired USMC here you go. wilderness-voyageurs.com/ohiopyle/laurel-highlands-hiking-trail/
Really cool, thanks man. Happy Trails.
Excellent video bro, Have to keep that positive spirit. What was that battier bank you use? I need a better one for my adventures. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.
id like to try i walked a little ways but wasnt prepared so i turned back
70 miles wow what achievement, and a very scenic place to do it. This is a real cool channel you have here, I just discovered it and have enjoyed many of your videos. I look forward to more from you. What adventures do you have planned for this season? The LHHT is less than 6 hrs from Ohio I will try to get out there someday.
Really awesome video dude..why didn't you hammock camp though?
Thanks man. I chose not to hammock camp for a couple reasons:
The kids that fell off the rock we're "Robo Tripping." at the time... Don't get high on cough syrup children!!!
You mean getting back to the fake world. Great Video!
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR SPORK ? DOES IT STAY IN PLACE WHEN YOU'RE EATING?
Thank you so much for taking us with you.
My girlfriend and I are seriously considering this trail.
Questions:
1. Where can I obtain a permit ?
2. Shelters; first served or do you reserve them ? If you reserve them; did u brought a tent with you ?(Just in case)
Shelters are shared with other backpackers ?
3. Is there somewhere to re-supply at some point or do we have to pack all food for all days ?
Thank you.
Luis (from Puerto Rico)
You can find all the information you need here: www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/lhht/
Shelters you need to reserve.
Luis, I live near one end of the trail. I would be happy to help you figure out a trip.
Laurel Highlands Thank you !Just did part of it and LOVED IT !!!Thank you for your hospitality !!!This is an AWSOME trail !!
