Until Sweet, CJ and some other Grove members were ambushed under the intersection, Ryder didnt know that Smoke and CRASH actually wanted to destroy Grove Street Families. Thats why he couldnt warn CJ or Sweet. After that, he waited for the right time to turn CJ's side again. And that right time was directly after when he got the drug money from Loco Syndicate in Pier 69. But he couldnt do it since they were ambushed by CJ, Cesar and Woozie and CJ killed him. That's my theory and according to that theory, Ryder was actually a hero, not a traitor.

I think in their minds Ryder and smoke never saw themselves as disloyal to the grove. They still wear their greens throughout the game. I think once CJ and Sweet were out of the picture they just went full time into the drugs trade and formed an alliance with the ballas and vagos. Believing it was best for them and for the hood. They were deluding themselves.
I really fucking wish Ryder's voice actor finished the voice lines properly in San Andreas. I didn't realize it as a kid but Ryder feels so rushed and unfinished as an antagonist, as if him being the bad guy was a sudden change. No mentions on Green Sabre, killing him and his death as a traitor feels like an killing an ordinary character, and he only gets mentioned once after his death. Plus, his voice lines and CJ's lines towards Ryder in Pier 69 feels like they were reused and recycled. Hell even if Ryder's voice actor couldn't finish the lines, at least R* could have made Ryder be killed in Green Sabre when fighting against the Ballas, whilst Sweet goes to prison, and CJ is exiled. Because he never seemed to be the bad guy, he helps Grove Street, while Smoke had plenty of shit hinting he was gonna betray the gang sooner or later. Shame tbh, Ryder deserved so much better...
Is it just only me that feels Ryder looks and voice were inspired from the og Gangster Rap Godfather 'Eazy-E'. Also Ryder is similar to Oakland Raider.
The only bad thing this game ever had was its graphics quality, only limited by the technology of its epoch. But damn, the animations, ambience and sound.. if it wasn't for its graphics every cutscene would look like a movie.

Hell even if Ryder's voice actor couldn't finish the lines, at least R* could have made Ryder be killed in Green Sabre when fighting against the Ballas, whilst Sweet goes to prison, and CJ is exiled. Because he never seemed to be the bad guy, he helps Grove Street, while Smoke had plenty of shit hinting he was gonna betray the gang sooner or later. Shame tbh, Ryder deserved so much better...
