    My first new rifle was a Weatherby Vanguard 25-06. I was 18 and hunted in Venango County Pennsylvania. Today at 73, I had the opportunity to acquire a new Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) in 25-06. I shoot Barnes 100 grain TTSX, there is no substitute!

    Hey Stu from the great white North.
    I have CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39. It's a high quality and very accurate rifle and perfect for scrub work.
    I handload with 123 and 150 hornady soft points.
    Perfect replacement for the sks same thing happened here in Australia 🇦🇺

    30-06 is the best Deer rifle for hand loader and factory offers alike Ron. I have popped big and small in the crease and didn't lose any meat. Close or far, Elk or Deer, 180gr Gameking is my choice. Shooting out to 400 yards or 25 it does it all. The scope I have settled on is the first one I bought. A wide field Weaver 1.5x4.5 variable with the command post reticle. I walk with it in my hands on 1.5 power. I can hit paper at 500 yards but never shot past 325.

    Hello Ron. The fella with the rechambered 250-3000 to 25-06 may find his accuracy improve through the practice of reloading. My goto rifle is a 25-06, and I found that reloading has not only improved my accuracy but allows me to shoot everything from 75 grain to 120 grain. “Quality” bullets also matter. 👍

    I have a friend who built himself a beautiful wood stocked, custom 25-06 rifle. It didn't produce the accuracy that he wanted with the heavier bullets. His preferred bullet was the 100 gr nosler partition. He hunted with that rifle for many, many years, taking many dozens of elk, moose, bear, deer and antelope. He only recently passed the rifle down to one of his sons.

    Hey Ron, I have a comment on the 243 Winchester. I handload, and you can even buy them, the 85gr bullet is much better than the 100gr bullet. The 85 is coming out of my rifle at 3300fps. At that speed it outperforms the 100gr out to 400yds in terms of retained energy. This is even better when you use the Barnes TSX bullet!

    I bought a Marlin 336 that came with a 1.5-6X Bushnell. I wanted a low power scope to hunt the woods with that would correct some of my minor vision issues. Haven’t taken it off 1.5 and can keep it under an inch at 100 yards. Now if he deer would cooperate when I take it out.

    I bought a 1x-8x LPVO for a nephew. From Vortex. I wanted the 1-10x but couldn’t afford it. For my own use on a 223 bolt gun, I believe that a 1-6x would maximize its use as a truck gun. The trucks on the ranch need a gun. Packs of dogs, coyotes wreak havoc on the spring drop and both cows and sheep are getting expensive. Gasoline is cheaper than horse quality hay. A Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 5.56/223 is perfect for the off road equipment also. Fits great in the saddle scabbard on my nephews quad.

      As a Brush Hunter a 3X9 scope is usseles when you spook something 20-30 Yds Out. I bought a 1,5x6 Leupold(very expensive about 400$ when a fine Rifle went for 450$ It was Browning BLR in 7-08, sleek and fast for close range)( Could not afford a Zeiss or Svarovsky) in the 1980's( there were not many cheap $350 guns Then), I grew up with open sights and then the standard 3x9. Today a 1x8 or 1x10 is Perfect. And Affordable. As a Truck gun would prefer the Mini 14/30 or the BLR in what ever cal. BLR not cheap anymore and very expensive as in my day 👍That BLR was way beyond what I could afford in the day. But experience made me buy it and hvn't regreted. Only a semi-auto is faster. It's a Lever Bolt action. And comes all the way to 300 WM. Would not recomend That one. But Look into it

      I wish someone would make a 1-8 with no illumination or big turrets in the 14oz range. The 1-4’s very basic are awesome and light for a bush rifle but the 1-6+ are so much heavier because their for being tactical. Their is 2-7’s that are light so it can’t be that hard to do. When Smokey the Bear pops up at 20yds it’s nice to have both eyes open 1x

      I do not consider 8x a low power. 4x would be the max on a low power. I would call that a variable optic but not low power. I have an old 2.5-8x Bushnell on my 257 Roberts. I don't consider that a LPVO. As for the going as low. 1x that's mainly for CQB applications where both eyes open at very close targets very very quickly is the rule.

    The point behind a 1x scope is for people trained to shoot with both eyes open. Mainly for close up work like clearing a room, but without magnification you can keep both eyes open and have more situational awareness.

    29:43 - SKS ban rifle choice
    Either of your listed choices are good for your chosen ammunition. I'm not familiar with the particulars of the ban, or if any bolt action will suffice. The days of $3,000 admission for a straight pull are gone... and for roughly $300 more than the Ruger American Ranch, you can get a Savage Impulse. Just something to think about.

    Hey Ron, I've got a correction of my own correction you called out in this video! Oh no! I had a typo in 6.8 Western bullets list. The lightest load is the 162gr Winchester Copper Impact, not a 160gr. Well just goes to show that we always have to be paying attention to the details and looking out for each other!
    Seriously though, I'm still relatively new to the hunting community, but have been watching your videos for a couple of years now, and you always have great information and such a positive outlook and responsible attitude towards conservation and wildlife and habit and the ethics of it all, I really truly appreciate it. You really are right about focusing on all that is what will ensure the future of our planets wild spaces and wild animals. And it's just so great to be focusing on being out in nature and being a part of the ecosystem the way man kind always has been. Really keeps things in perspective. Keep up the awesome work!

    The twist rate information about the 30-06 and the best deer cartridge summations you gave are excellent.
    You should probably put those in a little mini video because that is so packed full of information. It needs to be played over multiple times to listen to.
    It seems like there’s always an audience when it comes to cartridge comparison. Those kind of comparisons are fun to listen to, even if you are already set up.

    The man with the 300 Win Mag is overgunned for pronghorn, even if he can load it down a little. If his finances allow, he should get a 243 or 25-06. They have the advantage of dual purpose for game or varmints, and less recoil. Sounds like he already handloads, so he can have his pick of bullets beyone the factory loads (i would go with 25-06, simply because it has always interested me. I imagine any good 100 grain bullet would work well, although i would probably veer toward 120, because that is how i am. However, my next ridle is going to be a 7mm-08, so there you go.
    Good call on the 250 Savage. I remember a good Terry Wieland article from a year or so ago, about just that. The original twist of 1:14" was too slow, and they went to 1:12". And 1:10" likely would have been better still. I would like to see a revival of the 250 Savage. Seems like it would be a great light recoil option, and probably ideal for a first centerfire for a youth of either gender. But realistically, the 7mm-08 only has a little more recoil, and a much wider variety of bullet choices.

    I live in Western Canada (similar landscape to Montana/Wyoming) my wife shoots a 2.5-10X42 and my main 280AI has a 5-15x42. I quite often use the 15 to get a good look prior to shooting but often dial out to 8 - 12 when I'm about to shoot so I can get a picture of what's going on and can track easily for a follow up shot if needed. Also, I was hunting a few years ago with a good friend who shot a mule deer doe. We get up to it and this thing is the size of a small German Sheppard. I looked at him and asked why he shot the smallest of the herd, he insisted it was huge and it must have been a through and through and hit a second deer (we had adequate tags had that been the case) so we looked around for another deer and after about 15 minutes I remarked that this must have been the only one and proceeded to make fun of him. He was so confused and finally looked at his rifle, he thought he was on 3x but was on 12x. In his scope it looked huge but was actually 4times smaller. And I mean small

      @@RonSpomerOutdoorsI think the actual benefit of 1x in a scope is simply having the sight and the target on the same plane. I know as I get older, the ability to resolve the rear sight, front sight, and target all at the same time gets more difficult when using traditional semi-buckhorn iron sights. Peep sights definitely help in that regard and I use them often to plink with, but they aren’t as precise as aiming with a scope, and I don’t like to chance wounding a game animal if using better equipment is an option. There’s no substitute for placing fine crosshairs where you want to hit, in my experience, as compared to iron sights. Sure there are guys like Hickok 45 who can hit a fly at 100 yards using iron sights with a pistol, but I’m not one of them. That said, however, I agree with you, Ron, that if I do have a lower power scope available, then I always opt for 1.5 ~ 2x. Field of view is still great at low power, and the improvement in one’s ability to place the shot is much better with even a modest degree of magnification. My personal favorites in hunting scopes are those in the 1.5-6 x 42 zoom range. Being an east of the Mississippi hunter, it’s extremely rare to get a shot where we hunt in KY, MS, FL or Louisiana that’s longer than 150 yards, unless it’s at the edge of a bean field or power line, and 6x will still get one out longer than most of us have any business trying to shoot at game. YMMV

    I agree on the deer cartridges. Look at the average distance a hunter shoots where you live. If most shots are less than a 100, or less than 200, or you're out west where the shots are longer, and the wind can blow harder. Most deer are midsized in the USA. I like 6.5/264 and 7/284 caliber cartridges. If you live east of the MS river, then most shots are probably less than 200 yards. A 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 remington for in 7mm the 7-08 will be great. The 6.5 PRC or 280/280AI can extend your range a little. I'm a big fan of 7 rem mag, but it's kind of over kill for hunting deer in east Texas or LA or GA etc...

Heavy Hammer could be a game changer taking advantage of the lighter Copper construction increasing Sectional Density as it is less dense than lead with higher Velocity of the lighter bullet. The 120gr. Hammer looks like it has a Higher sectional density than a 220gr. 30cal. How's makes perhaps the best bolt action in 7.62x39 as the action size is a semi custom fit.

Hornady has prepopulated the program with data about most manufacturers’ high BC bullets. For instance, their 225 grain 30 cal. ELD-M is stable at 2400 fps out of a 10 twist barrel. You’d have to consult a reloading manual to determine whether you could get that muzzle velocity. If so, it would seem to contradict Ron’s statement that you’d need a round nose out of a 30-06.

    Ron for me that all around best Deer round is either a 270 Winchester or the 7mm Express (280) both are long actions .I been dabbling with short AR PLATFORM Cartridges such as 6.5 Grendel 300ACC BK and the 350 Legend. The 30 Remington has all but went away. How does this sound a 7mm Remington ? Using a 30 Remington case necked down to 284. Would be interesting. Don't forget the 308 Winchester. There's a lot of great choices out there.

      Your 7mm-30 Rem would be a sliver different than the 6.8 SPC, which is the 30 Remington case necked down to .277. But if by 30 Remington you mean the 30 AR Remington, you're onto something wildly different. This short fat would likely drive a 140-gr. spire point .284 bullet 2,700 to 2,800 fps from a 24" barrel, matching or exceeding what Bell was flattening elephants with using his 275 Rigby aka 7x57 Mauser. That's performance. (Bell used 173-gr. solids at roughly 2,300 fps.) I'm not certain why the 30 AR Rem. has faded. Probably because its width reduced magazine capacity. Why any deer hunter feels he/she needs more than 3-round magazine capacity escapes me.

Back in the 1970s I jumped jackrabbits and shot them on the run with a 10X Weaver atop a 223 Rem. in a Win. M70. 10X is not ideal for swinging in front of a running jack, but can be done. Regarding Randy's 270 project. I recommend having the rifle chambered is 270 AI not 270 win. I have done this on my rifle and have been very happy with the results. I find I am able to match the velocity of 6.8 western in my 1:9 24" barrel. However 270 win brass and ammo is much more available than 6.8 western. I have been able to use Redding type S dies for 280 Ackley and then change out the bushing to get the proper neck tension. I am pushing a 140 grain hammer hunter 3175 and a 165 ABLR 2900 fps. Not necessarily, Marty. Terminal performance is a huge part of it. A full metal jacket bullet wouldn't be very effective on game regardless its accuracy. A frangible varmint bullet would be useless for trying to flatten, say, a big brown bear or Cape buffalo. Bullets must be balanced for good accuracy, good ballistic performance (aerodynamic efficiency) in some cases (longer ranges,) AND terminal performance in game.

      @RonSpomerOutdoors Рік тому +1

      @@martybennett1861 Hope I helped clear up some confusion, Marty. As for that 17 HMR, be aware that its high velocity results in serious muscle/tissue destruction. You must be extremely careful with shot placement if you hope to eat your rabbits and squirrels. I found that broadside head shots are the only good option. If I take head shots with the rabbit or squirrel facing me, the front quarters and much of the backstraps are usually destroyed. You might want to consider the common 22 long Rifle instead. You don't need a lot of velocity to cleanly kill these tasty small animals, and you can generally get within 50 yards or less, so a 22 rimfire (not the magnum version) is a grand option. In the high velocity 17s the polymer-tipped Hornady bullets are excellent for accuracy and explosive terminal effect. They are not, however, Ballistic Tips. That is a specific brand name with Nosler. Hornady call's their polymer tipped varmint bullet V-Max. Plastic tips on bullets do not make them Ballistic Tips. Virtually every bullet maker puts plastic/polymer tips on at least some of their bullets. These increase B.C. slightly and prevent tip damage, which used to be an issue with pure lead tips. Good luck and have fun!

Red dots lose a bit of charm after a few hundred yards. When I was a kid (I think you and I are about the same age...39 and holding), most scopes were fixed power 2x ,3x or 4x. The rich guys had the variable power jobs. I see the logic and have fallen prey to it myself. But I bet many, if not most folks, find heir "happy power" and leave it there. Great channel. • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors 2 роки тому +1

      Many think the rounded nose "hit's harder," but I've seen no proof of this. It seems to make sense because there is more frontal area, but at the impact velocities of most bullets and the expansion, mangling, tumbling, breaking up -- I don't quite buy it. Round nose and especially flat nose do track straighter, esp. if solids. This is why they are used for true, deep penetration on the big stuff in Africa. A curved nose (ogive) means variable pressures (bone or muscle on one side only) redirect the bullet's path. You can see this even in ballistic gel. The definite downside to round nose it the lower B.C. which means energy is wasted pushing air. This means more drop, more wind deflection, less energy on target, especially after 100, 150-yards or so. Anyone who shoots most of their game inside of 150, maybe 200 yards and strongly believes a round nose is best should stick with it because confidence is a big deal!

    Favored deer cartridge. I can understand your reluctance, do you really have a "favorite"? I think you are like me and like to play with too many different cartridges, many of which deliver very satisfactory performance. I have my very favorite cartridge, backed by 50 years of very favorable performance, but probably also by some biased personal feelings, but being objective, I know many cartridges have very good merit. The 7mm is a very good caliber and the 7mm-08 is a very good cartridge for deer and also gives good performance for other game like elk. Objectively, I think the 280 AI is one of the best all around hunting cartridges available, having a very good balance of power, accuracy, ballistic performance, tolerable recoil, magazine capacity, and ability to be chambered in good hunting rifles of all weights, including very lightweight rifles. It's only con is it's availability in rifles and ammo availability. I don't understand why it isn't way more popular. I have read that forming a case with a 40 degree shoulder is much more difficult, particularly for a company trying to form huge amounts, maybe this is the reason, I don't know, but I believe the 280 AI deserves much more. As for deer cartridges, the 7mm-08 is a dandy, and to hear it told, the 6.5 creedmoor is "perfection" according to some. When it first came out, I was very intrigued by it. I later got one and hunted with it for awhile but was very underwhelmed by it. It was nice to shoot, accurate and would kill the game, but I found it to be nothing particularly special. A caliber that appeals to me, but apparently not to many others, is the 25. I have had very good experience hunting with 25's, a 257 weatherby, a 25-06, a 25 WSSM, a 257 Roberts, and a 25-35. I also had a 250 savage for awhile but never got around to hunting with it. I took the 257 Roberts, the 6.5 creedmoor and the 25-35 antelope hunting taking multiple animals with them all. On those hunts, the 257 Roberts performed performed noticeably more emphatically than the creedmoor, and the 25-35, while limited to much closer range, even it performed as well and in one case better than the creedmoor in knocking down the antelope. I don't think the 25's get their just due.

      Wouldn't be my first or even fifth choice, but the reality is that it cranks out as much horsepower as most commercial 45-70 loads pushing a 300-gr. bullet. Add in the magazine capacity and auto-fire and might not be a bad option. I'm concerned, though, about the penetration potential of the low SD (just .210) of 300-gr. .452" bullets. I take a hard look at FMJ or solid coppers with flat noses. Energy of 300-gr. at 1900 fps is just 2,400 fp at muzzle. A 180-gr. 30-06 cranks out 3,134 fp and has much higher SD at .271. Go with a 200-gr. A-Frame at 2,600 fps and energy drops to 3,000 f-p, but SD increases to .301 and the controlled expansion/weight retention of the A-Frame suggests deep, bone crushing penetration. So, I don't know...

      Most 7mm-08s come with 1:9 or 1:10 twist, both more than adequate for the longest 160-gr. bullets. It's at or after 175-gr. that 7mm shooters need to start considering a 1:8 twist.

    Really Ron the 243 is the best deer round come on now I could understand your other pick the 7mm08 but I would say the 308 is the best deer round across the board I think you know that deep down but you hate that round for some reason there are a ton of others that are just as good with a deer bullet and right wights but the 243 would be my last choice

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors

      Warren, I don't recall declaring the 243 Win the best deer round, just a good option for those who don't like recoil. The 308 Win is a fine option, but no better than the 7mm-08, 270 Win., 30-06, 338 Federal, 260 Rem. and a dozen others. 308 Win. does have advantages in ammo selection, availability, and price in most places. A 22 CB cap would be my last choice.

      I know of an old feller that hunted whitetails with his 243 all his life in northern Minn. He always had meat in his freezer. Of course shot placement is important, but you fellers know this. Just had to throw that in there.

    Ron said he didn’t like the 7.62x39 because of all the American soldiers killed by it in the hands of Russian soldiers. I’m not aware of any war in which the US and Russia fought as adversaries. Perhaps he was thinking of the American soldiers slaughtered by Spanish troops wielding the 7x57 Mauser.

      No Scott, I was thinking of all the proxy wars and terrorists the Soviets armed and still arm. Not to mention Viet Nam, etc. I realize an inanimate tool like a rifle/cartridge has no responsibility and my stance is a bit irrational.

      The chapter/time stamp title is a little misleading. You're looking for 22:48 . Viewer asks about bullet choices for a rifle he inherited from his grandpa, and re-chambered for 25-06.

      Eddie, depends on what the shooter's objective is. For general big game hunting to 500 yards or so, any controlled expansion 100 to 120-gr. I've had excellent results with 100 gr. Barnes TTSX and 92-gr. Hammer Hunters. Nosler 115-gr. Ballistic Tip Hunting are a great lead core option for deer, 120-gr. Partitions for elk. Hornady 75-gr. V-Max at around 3,700 fps is "the bomb" for long range coyotes, chucks. What's been missing but now appearing are heavier, longer, higher B.C. options like 131-gr. ACE Blackjack, 128-gr. Hammer Hunter, Hornady 134-gr. ELD-M. These will require fast twist barrels, about 1:7.

      @@ronspomer4366 I do reload the 100 gr TTSX and love it. Can’t beat the 75 gr VMax for prairie dogs! I’ll have to try and find some of those new offerings you mentioned but I believe my rifle’s barrel twist rate is 1:10”

    For Whitetail, I find 243 Winchester is sufficient out to 200 yards if you can get the opportunity for a good shot. Just this year I took a whitetail with a Rem 788 in 243 Win using a 100 grain Federal power-shok. Did an absolute number on the deer although it was only at 50 yards. I have used a 243 out to 125 yards with no problem in the past. Only problem this year was this old man done screwed up the shot but it went down within 15 yards of the impact. Bullet tech has come a long way since the last time I took a whitetail with that rifle in 1997. The rounds I used back then tended not to expand at all. This time there was more than sufficient expansion. Unfortunately, I have to give that rifle back to my nephew this next year so I'm on the hunt for a different rifle myself. Too bad. The 788 still shoots less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors 2 роки тому

      That 788 was a great "starter rifle" back in its day. Homely but deadly. I had one in 6mm Rem. and collected a dozen or so deer and pronghorn with it. No estimate on red fox and coyotes. Too bad the 6mm/244 Rem. is dying, but so goes the world. New variations on the theme. 6mm Creedmoor is the new kid taking over the neighborhood.

      Had a 788 in .243 win. a long time ago. It could shoot the rear end off a gnat! Wished I'd never traded it for a pretty gun.
