"Come Together" is on the Beatles' 1969 album "Abbey Road". This is one of my favorite albums. All the songs are great on it such as "Something", "Here Comes The Sun", "Oh! Darling", "Because", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" etc.

I've been listening to this song for 43 years and only recently (like a year ago) learned that that 'sound effect' you like so much? is John whispering "Shoot Me". And given how he died 10 years later, it has forever changed how I hear this song. It downright gives me goosebumps - and not always the good kind. Makes you wonder if Lennon hadn't recorded that sound effect, whether he'd still be alive today.
Musically it's fairly simple but the production, the mix are amazing. I love how during the verses sings on the off-beat but going into the chorus he sings on the beat. It affects the rhythm of the song.
This song is damn near perfect. Each component adds up to make this a superb song; the drums setup an easy yet pleasurable groove, the bass amplifies the feel--especially the double notes played with each verse, the guitar is smooth with a slight distortion and is not overpowering but rather fills in just at the right spots and of course the excellent singing seals the whole deal. I've had the pleasure of hearing this tune since it was first released and have yet to grow weary of it. I'm glad you enjoyed it as well.
If I may, I'd like to suggest "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun". Both are George Harrison penned tunes and are still as fresh as the day they were released.
In early July 1969 while driving in Scotland, John and Yoko were in a serious car accident. It forced John to miss several weeks of recording sessions for what became the Abbey Road album. Upon his return the last week of July, John brought the song Come Together to the studio. John was particularly rude to Paul. Telling Paul he didn't want Paul to sing harmony or play piano on the track. Paul, instead of making a scene, simply left the studio for the day. As the days passed Paul wrote the electric piano line for the solo while John watched over Paul's shoulder. Paul did end up singing the harmony on the song, when John wasn't present in the studio. Such was the tension between John and Paul by this time. The unofficial break up of the Beatles was only weeks away. Great reaction JAYY!! I loved it. Cheers, RNB
7:35 like y’all actually see this but the sound you’re wondering about is he’s playing a roll on an open, then closed high-hat it’s a two symbol stand and a person is actually making a sound right before and while that’s being played❤😂🎉
Anybody who lived at the time this was made knows that the schussing sound thing is mimicking what we all heard when we dial a rotary telephone. Every time you dial a number, when you release the dial it recoils back to a starting position and makes that noise. Somebody is dialing a phone, trying to come together start a discussion with another person over the phone. 😀 📞
Dear folkmusicvideo, I have listened again to that sound effect and you are right - under the “shoo” or “shoot” sound that Lennon makes there is an effect that does sound a bit like an old dial up phone. Apologies for my earlier comment.
the shhhhhh is John saying "shoot me". he was nuts. you should listen to "cold turkey", he says stuff like "can see no future, can see no sky" "I wish I was a baby, I wish I was dead". it's insane to think he had everything, one of the most famous singers in the world loved by millions, rich, married to the love of his life, but he still could be depressed and feel bad like any of us.
To me, the sound effect sounds like the rotary dial of a pay phone in a telephone booth. It could also be inspired by the sound of a coin being deposited into the pay phone, in the way it clanks and clatters around as it goes into the coin collection box at the bottom of the pay phone.
The "Sound" was Paul "Shushing", three Bass notes and Ringo's Beat, followed by a synth sound. On UA-cam, they have just the vocals of some Beatle Songs (Like Come Together, Help and Something). Just hearing their vocals will impress you even MORE!
@@ozmaile7938 Not true, Harrison had an early Moog synthesiser which was used on 'Here Comes The Sun','I Want You',as well as the medley and other side two tracks.
The Abbey Road album is my favorite from the greatest band of all time. This song and that iconic picture are both from that album. I love your videos and I love that you love the Beatles and Linda Ronstadt, my two favorites in the musical heaven of great artists. The song's lyrics always gave me the impression that it was about a gathering of hippie draftees entering boot camp for the US Army during the Vietnam War.
Morbidly, that sound is John whispering “shoot me”, during Ringo’s muffled, cloth covered drum fill. Reminds me of the echoed vocal sample in ‘1979’ by Smashing Pumpkins. Edit: The two examples are reminiscent of each other, in my opinion, because they’re both creative ways of adding a subliminal hook to the song. I’m not saying I think they sound alike or anything. Two completely different songs.
Paul took bass because no one else would play it. Good thing too, Paul did things with the bass the others probably couldnt. He could turn bass lines into melodies.
I remember being told this song started out to be a campaign song for Timothy Leary's run for governor of California. The phrase, "Come Together" was Leary's campaign slogan. Can't remember the details of what all happened except that Leary was imprisoned on a marijuana charge before the campaign had a chance to take off. In any case, since there wasn't going to be a need for the song any longer, Lennon then just wrote a bunch of nonsense lyrics around the campaign slogan "Come Together". In terms of the lyrics I always thought of it as a "stream of consciousness" thing that fit right into the psychedelic vibe of the times. The kind of thing you could listen to, nod your head thoughtfully and mutter something like "Far out, man. That's heavy", and everyone would just nod in agreement with you even though it was completely meaningless.
I grew up with this music. There's a lot to love about this song, but one thing I always liked about it is the use of guitar distortion just before "over me". The first time I heard that, I thought the song was poorly engineered. Then I realized that it was done intentionally for effect. Cool!
Great reaction again. Insightful. Too many people told me what to think about the Beatles when i was young. As I age, I know I like Lennon songs better, I love the McCartney bass line innovations, the drumming of Ringo that is not flashy but is inventive and perfect for the music. Finally you can track the growing complexity of Harrison and his technical excellence.
