Born Eugene Maurice Orowitz, Landon came from a complex family background and had to overcome various personal challenges in his early life. Nevertheless, he emerged as a promising actor, landing the part of Little Joe on Bonanza when he was just 22. As we delve into his early career, we examine the transition from actor to writer and the hurdles that Landon had to overcome on this path.
Known for his pivotal role on "Bonanza," a television show that still holds a firm place in America's cultural memory, Landon's aspirations extended beyond his acting career. His journey into screenwriting was not initially welcomed, with his first script being significantly shorter than the industry standard and filled with spelling and grammatical errors. However, with perseverance and under the guidance of Bonanza's producer David Dortort, Landon improved his craft.
Despite this rocky start, Landon not only managed to establish himself as a credible writer for "Bonanza" but also went on to pen scripts for other acclaimed TV shows, including "Little House on the Prairie." Yet, his initial foray into writing for Bonanza, an episode titled "The Gamble," left Landon dissatisfied and disheartened. He disliked it so much that it ended up fueling his drive for improvement and originality in his later works.
Join Facts Verse s as we peel back the layers of Michael Landon's professional journey, exploring the little-known facts about his foray into screenwriting and how his dissatisfaction with his inaugural script led to a transformative career path. This video is a must-watch for fans of classic television, aspiring writers, and anyone interested in the complex history of Hollywood's golden era.

My father loved to talk about how he had dated Michael Landon's sister, and how at the time, Michael (then Eugene) was "just a punky little kid." Wow how times changed!
Interesting, thanks for sharing your father's life story. We would love to see a picture of him with Michael's sister.
My favorite memory of Michael Landon was "Bonanza." My dad loved that show, so consequently, it was always on our TV every time an episode aired...it was quite interesting. Have to confess, "Adam" (Pernell Roberts) was my favorite actor though...
Adam was my favourite character too.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Well from what I hear about him he was well-liked when he did Little Joe in Bonanza but then when he did Little House on the Prairie everybody said he was just a very difficult man to work for and nobody really liked him. I watched his other series too I liked watching Highway to Heaven but from what I hear he just was a jerk and real-life it's really too bad because I just want to remember him as being Little Joe not that a****** he turned out to be.
My favorite show that he did was Little House in the Prairie. He had a reputation for not being a very nice man. If he liked you and you were on his good side, you were treated like a King or a Queen. If he didn't respect you or like you, he made your life difficult. I also heard that he cheated on his first wife with his second. That aside, he was an incredible actor that brought a lot of warmth and realism to his craft. He had tremendous skills and good looks, not only was he an amazing actor, writer, producer, director, and singer. Personally, I don't think he could sing at all. In my personal point of view, he sang similar to Linda Carter and Barbara Eden. They're nice to look at, but to listen to them, it's like nails on a chalkboard. Don't get me wrong. I'm fans of all three of them, but unless you've heard them, it leave much to be desired.
On a more positive note, Michael Landon was an amazing businessman and production manager. I once saw a documentary on the making of Little House on the Prairie, and it mentioned that his production costs were either cut anywhere from a 3rd to half. He knew how to manage and set up for the next shot, not wasting any valuable time and daylight hours.
Here's a bit of Trivia and irony. He was born on halloween 1936 and did the cult classic film from 1957 "I was a Teenage Warewolf"
RIP Michael Landon (born Eugene Maurice Orowitz; age 54, October 31, 1936 - July 1, 1991)
Fun stuff, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! No worries, you're entitled with your own opinion. Which episode of Little House on the Prairie appealed to you the most?
I remember Teenage Werewolf and saw it as a young teen and being impressionable was frightened at night because I just knew a werewolf was gonna spring out from behind a hedge and attack me.

@FactsVerse It's not so much that it appealed to me but that the acting the writing and the directing were so intense that I remember it very well. I don't know if it won an Emmy, but if it didn't, it should have. The most impressionable episode of Little House in the Prairie was the 1983 season 9, Episode 16 and 17. It was called "Home Again 1 and 2. It is the episode with amazing acting so realistic, and it was written, directed , and he also costared Michael Landon.
The acting was so intense and so realistic by Matthew Charles Labyorteaux (aka Albert Ingles) that he should have won many awards for that episode. The episode deals with, unfortunately, drug, stealing, and family rift and love. Albert and Charles return to Walnut Grove so charles can help Albert. Albert has a problem in that he has gotten addicted to morphine and he steals some from Doc Baker so the problems persist. Albert has fallen in with the wrong crowd in the city, so Charles quits his job and takes him home to Walnut Grove. Once Charles discovers that hes addicted to drugs, they go through the detoxification process, which is not only hard on Albert's body but emotionally draining for the both of them.
My mother loved Elvis and Michael Landon, I I grew up watching little house and highway to heaven
He was so good!!
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great weekend!
I watched all Micheal Landons shows still do
You're a true fan but wait, which of his shows appealed to you the most?
Nice video of his life thanks.
OUr pleasure! We're glad to know that you love our video. If we may ask, what other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I found it interesting that other actors that were to handsome, like Guy Williams didn't hang on long. Or the other handsome actor who was little Joe step brother. I met him a year before his cancer diagnosis. When he was doing the tennis classic every year, I got to met him just once. He was really quiet but took a picture with me and a autograph. I cried when he died, loved little Joe and being born on Halloween he was everything anyone would or could be.
Michael Lived about 12 Miles from Me in Collingswood New Jersey...
Interesting! Did you get a chance to meet him?
My wife still watches little house on the prairie .
Fun stuff, how about you?
You have THE Best narrativ ever! Thank you

Someone asked if Michael Landon left anything to his children?
You know that was a very good question. I didn't know the answer to that. Did a little research this is what I found out.
"Actor Michael Landon died on July 1, 1991, of pancreatic cancer.
He left $8 million to $10 million to each of his nine children, according to People magazine. His namesake, Michael Landon Jr., went on to become a successful producer and director."
Michael Landon was married three times.
He married Dodie Levy-Fraser (1956-1962) they had two children,
Mark Fraser Landon 1948 (adopted; Dodie's biological son),
Josh Fraser Landon 1960 (adopted as infant)
Marjorie Lynn Noe (1963-1982), had five children,
Cheryl Ann Pontrelli 1953
Leslie Ann 1962,
Michael Graham 1964,
Shawna Leigh 1971,
Christopher Beau 1975,
Cindy Clerico (1983-till his death). children are
Jennifer Rachel 1983 and
Sean Matthew 1986 .
He had nine children in total from the marriages, including his adopted children.
i read his book about his life, he was not well liked, he bully others make fun of others. But overall he sure put out some good shows on LHOTP. I didn't watch Bonanza much. But I sure watched Little house. I thought it was neat how he took life experience and made it into show. He so into realizem.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this info about Michael. Which episode of Little House on the Prairie appealed to you the most?
I grew up watching little house on the prairie and highway to heaven too
Us too! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Which episode of LHOTP appealed to you the most?
I loved Bonanza. Didn't watch to much of Little House, or the Angel one. I thought he was a great actor. Miss you Michael RIP.

When Little Joe had to make a very hard decision to cut his arm off.
😂 I have always called that the Bonanza Syndrome. They used it several times with unjust or false accusations against all the cast. You saw the syndrome overused on Law&Order SVU and Criminal Intent where Olivia Benson or Bobby Goren are falsely accused repeatedly. It got so monotonous it was truly boring.
Sad but true. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I've seen others who have the same attitude towards life of being hard to get along with. . It's called "little man syndrome" He was not a very muscular man. He was short & he worked around burley men who stood out. Yes, a great actor but a lack of physical confidence could have been some of his problems being hard to get along. Jmo
@@ccastaneda669 Two actors who seemed to have over come their height was Micky Rooney. He was only 5'2" and he was well respected and loved in Hollywood. Danny DeVito is also well respected at 4'10".
@@ccastaneda669 Thanks for the lengthy History lesson but I took that class in High School. My reference to Micky & Danny was ONLY an after thought showing me that not all men experience that condition and are just fine with their height, some men aren't. I know because I've dealt with it in a relationship. Even he admitted it was his problem for being a di##. Since MY OPINION isn't going to change, no need to revisit it. Capiech????.
@@ccastaneda669 So what.?? It was a PERSONAL OPINION, we've all got one remember??? Just like the novel you posted. Do you not know what "no need to revisit this subject" means. ??? Move on because your obviously looking for a way to proof YOUR right & everybody else is wrong & it's not going to work with me. Capiech, AGAIN.???????????
Nice

Too many to name , But one that to mind is the leprechauns on Bonanza
Hey we're 1 of the best Groups ever ❤️
To think that if Michael Landon were still alive today, he would be 87 years old.
Little House on the Prairie!
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
It's hard to pick what his best work was but I'd like to have seen into a comedy or science fiction
Nice. But childhood blonde pic is of his son ML Jr.
I don't know what episode he hated
He did not age well. Paul Newman is the poster boy for aging; while Robert Redford is the opposite.
GREAT ACTOR,,,,,,,,, HANDSOME ,,,,AM JEALOUS H HA HA HA CORNEY JOKE,,,EVERY GUY IN THE UK WANTED TO LOOK LIKE HIM,,,,OR ELVIS MAYBE DEAN ALSO,,,WE ALL LOVE MIKE
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I hated bonanza so much i did not watch it lolz
May we ask why
Any man who leaves his wife and kids for some younger thing is not much of a man even if he is a good actor!
