Sounds so good! I know this isn't what you intended with the recipe, but it made me think of egg foo young, and was thinking that'd be another fun way to go while still using the oil the way you suggest, but mixing the dace into the egg foo young with the other vegetables.

Many years ago I was living in China and didn’t know how everything shut down for spring festival. All the restaurants were closed, all my friends went home, the main market closed. Only the campus convenience store was open. I bought three cans of these fish and ate them with rice for a few days until some friends remembered me and invited me to their family home for the holidays. One of the loneliest, but most distinct meals I have had.
Well I grown up in the Northern and for us this is that kind of fancy Southern things that almost nobody would buy. My parents can’t properly enjoy it even now😂😂😂😂
I'd say I never really "loved" it, just feeled it's okay, acceptable when I grew up eating this. I still prefer olive vegetable 橄榄菜 and fermented tofu 腐乳 over this to eat with rice

This is basically how we would eat this. I am from a Chinese family, born in England in the 70s and just opening a can of these fish (no need to cook them), and maybe a couple of other cooked side dishes would not be uncommon to accompany a bowl of white rice or two. Basically, everyone has a bowl of white boiled rice 🍚 and you would pick at the side dishes. The can of dace by itself would make a very easy and filling meal accompanied with just boiled white rice as you had it. Something about the saltyness of the fish and oils with the blandness of white boiled rice makes it really tasty and addictive. You could easily go through two or three bowls of rice picking at the can of fish followed by a couple of mouthfuls of rice at a time. Not unlike a can of sardines, the bones are edible, too. Another example of salty food being a good accompaniment to white boiled rice would be slices of fried spam /luncheon meat. This is similar to the Hawaian staple and is made better together with fried eggs.
Dace are common throughout Europe virtually and are delicious. They mostly like clean, fairly swift-flowing water and are safe to eat (at least in England).
I'm 40 and never had any interest in sardines at all. Within 24 hours after coming across this channel, I went to the grocery store and bought 2 cans and I'm calling them Deens. WTF just happened.

I grew up on this stuff, when my parents were often too busy working to cook for us. I love it. Since living in Japan this stuff is impossible to find and whatever stash I have is a treasure.
I was given a can of these by a couple of my friends who know I like canned fish. I ended up finely dicing it up and frying it with some rice and its own oil. The key is to add some sugar, it really balances it out. Other than that I just added some sautéed veggies. I have a shop just down the street that sells all kinds of Asian foods including this dace. I’m inspired to get another can now. Thanks Matt!
@@MrLanternlandMSG is naturally occurring in many savoury things. Steak, mushrooms, bonito flakes etc. it’s not dangerous and it just adds an umami flavour to dishes. You can do some googling if you don’t believe me. It’s great to add to dishes to deepen flavour. Many Asian recipes call for it. If you’re still uncomfortable using it for some reason, try just using one of the many natural sources of it. Soy sauce is a good one. So is seaweed. Being afraid of msg is just like being afraid of sugar except it makes less sense (excessive sugar is proven to be unhealthy). Don’t worry though, MSG being bad is a common myth many people still believe. Lots of chefs rely on it to deepen the flavour of savoury dishes. Fermented black beans themselves are a huge source of natural umami too btw.

If you can cook and have plenty of free time, making a fried rice is a must try at least once. The fried rice is salty, so I'll add unorthodox things like Bombay onion in it to make it tastier.
i didnt like these at first since it was such a different flavor profile, but quickly realized its a real diamond in the rough. absolute flavor bomb with zero fishiness and makes a quick meal out of rice. everyone should try, step out of your comfort zone! and if you don't like it keep trying til u do 😂😂

I love eating canned fried dace with plain congee. I refrigerate the contents (I like it cold) and roughly mash fish, black beans, and oil together. I scoop spoonfuls of this mixture onto steaming hot (not too watery) congee. Accompanied with Chinese sweet cucumbers (store bought) to offset the "heavy" protein. Yum!

It may be a bit salty to eat like this. I recommend a dish called lettuce and dace. You can boil the vegetables without any seasoning and put them at the bottom. Then pour the canned food on top of the vegetables and it will be very delicious.
when I was locked down wasn't allowed to leave my building for a couple weeks during COVID in China I have no shame in saying I ate a few of these straight from the can. hard to digest being so salty and oily, but the beans and bones... *chef's kiss*. Can be eaten straight, over rice as you did, added in when stir frying for added umami etc.

We used to put the can into a pot of boiling water. Then we waited like 8 minutes or so. Take it out, and open carefully because it will be under a bit of pressure. The content will be very warm and serve with lots of white rice.
Always have this in my pantry for emergency. I will open one when I am tired, don't feel like cooking or having unexpected guests over. It's delicious and easily turn into several dishes. I like to eat it with cold rice.
