- A new video shows the exact moment a dam collapsed in Brazil.
The dam breached on January 25, 2019. At least 115 people were killed in the tragedy, and 248 are still missing.
It unleashed a destructive torrent of reddish-brown mining waste.
For everyone concerned about the driver of the pickup. He survived, and was interviewed by the BBC. He said the truck somehow ended up on top of the sludge and he and his mate made it
That must have been like winning the lottery in terms of odds.

More horrifying is the fact that there were people walking around where the ground started to collapse
It started from the patch on hill where there were no plants. The part where trees were did not slide. That is why it is said plant trees on mountains as it hold the soil.
"Brazil has too many trees anyways"
- Jair Bolsonaro, probably
Trees should never be planted on dams. While it's true trees stabilize steep slopes, their roots often create paths for water to seep through dams weakening the integrity of the structure. This looks like a rotational failure of some kind. My guess would be piping/seepage weakened the structure.

Weird that you can see the land just liquify.
Looks fake
Geography Student here: It's actually a really common phenomenon and called "soil liquefaction" To make a very simplified explanation: When a soil is really really saturated with water (for example because it rained a lot) and there is a sudden great mechanical force applied onto the soil, the pressure of the water inside of the little pores between the grains of sand changes, so that the individual grains of sand are not touching each other anymore but are now "floating" in the water. The same phenomenon is responsible for nearly all mudslides. when you search on youtube there are videos of pieces of mountain just breaking of, liquifiying, and rushing down the mountain like a river of mud. The same thing can happen when there is an earthquake in a really wet area: Houses will just sink into the ground, and sewer pipes will just pop up to the surface because the whole ground liquifies for a few minutes during the eartquake.
The land is a paid actor

Not quite, we are almost there, but we still aren't yet. The processing power to required accurately render images that are as fluid and complex as real life just isn't there yet. We are getting close though.
