Evelyn Thomas - Weak Spot

- This was Evelyn's first ever recording at the tender age of just eighteen years old. It was recorded in the summer of 1975. I discovered Evelyn while holding auditions in Chicago, arranged by Danny Leake, who I'd met the year before, in England, with his group, 100% Pure Poison. In February 1976, this record, "Weak Spot" and a song by a young Chicago postman, L.J. Johnson, both charted in the same week, and both acts were flown over to appear on Top Of The Pops, both on the same show. The entire music business was flummoxed as to how two completely unknown young black singers from Chicago, who had never even recorded before, both had hits on entirely different labels in the same week as each other. It was a further eight years before Evelyn went on to record her classic, the seven million selling "High Energy"
Truly great, I was lucky enough to be in her U.K. backing band in early 1976 when she toured with L. J. Johnson and Barbara Pennington.
I think it was 76 when Evelyn, Barbara and LJ came to the Ritz in Manchester. Those were the days!
Absolutely fantastic.
I haven't heard this for years.
Many Thanks.
Great memories of my Northern Soul days! KTF
Discovered by British producer Ian Levine, who was in the US in 1975 scouting for gospel and soul singers he could promote in the UK, the two recorded several tracks which resulted in a contract with 20th Century Records.[2] Evelyn Thomas scored a chart hit with her first single, reaching the UK Top 30 in 1976 with the single "Weak Spot," co-written by Levine and Paul David Wilson
