This is a beautiful japanese cover of the 1969 italian "Volevo un gatto nero" ("I wanted a black cat"), winner of the 11th edition of the international children's song festival "Zecchino D'Oro" (Golden Sequin).
I listened to Italian version and Japanese version. It is true that the original is Italian one by Vincenza Pastrelli in March 1969 while this Japanese one by Osamu Minagawa was published in October 1969. Both are very nice and I love the two of them but we should know the following three things : 1. In Italy this song was created mainly for children while in Japan the target clients were mainly adults. That's why the music itself was arranged in more elaborated and sophisticated way. 2. The content of Japanese version is completely different from that of Italian version ( they have nothing in common except a black cat ). 3. This Japanese version was sold abroad not only in Japanese but also in six different foreign languages like English, French, German etc..always sung by Osamu Minagawa. All included Minagawa's version was sold over 4 millions abroad and 2.6 millions in Japan while Italian version was sold over 9 millions ( I don't know if it was only in Italy or all over the world), if I am not wrong. Anyway, I love both of them and respect also Italian people's pride about this song.

As a child in the early 1970s, I had a book of Guinness World Records and I saw a black and white photo of this little boy and it had something to do with a world record that was set with the sales of this song. I always remembered it and right now is the first time that I've ever listened to it.
