  • Relax as you watch the pulse from the heartbeat of our sun wash over the atmosphere of our precious planet.
Created using slightly faster video, not time-lapse photography, this is what a strong aurora australis display looks like to the naked eye.
Filmed from the small seaside village of Kiama, NSW Australia.

This is great - what camera/lens did you use and was this on 6/7th May? I counted 20 satellites, quite surprised at the number

I know this is an old comment but the best times are around the equinoxes, we don't know why but those seem to be the days when the earth is more vulnerable to solar activity and produces interesting auroras.

Check the KP index to see when we are in a geomagnetic storm and then you will be assured of capturing some auroras. Equinox's don't have much to do with it as in timing. The sun has everything to do with it in what it lets go of in a coronal hole stream with the solar wind and then we experience a geomagnetic storm where particles rain in at us if its earth directed, and if it is at a time when our magnetosphere is weak we get very very bright auroras.. The brighter they are the weaker our shield is, so while it is pretty it does signal what is coming in on us from space and it does cause some negative health impacts. I also take photos and would love to capture an aurora but I live near the qld border .. love to go to Tassie and capture it. You get up to three days notice if you follow what the sun is doing on a space weather site so you can prepare to go.

We do know why its a pretty basic one of tilt of the magnetic fields i think. Anyway dark skies required so think winter.
